Lack of Activity

If Tejada is getting mad about the lack of activity in improving the Orioles team, I wonder what the Devil Ray players are thinking about their new owner? I hope the Rays have been briefed about the lock down. But, seriously when you consider what was out their that could have really improved this club, I don't have a problem with the lack of moves.

If you look at a team with similar holes and a comparable payroll like the Pirates, are they that better of a team with the moves they made?

Well, it appears Mets are getting serious about Baez, but considering the source, I will believe it when I see it.

Or..
Or look at the garbage the Royals have assembled.

The thing is, though, I think some of us were expecting these guys to swoop in and make some brilliant Billy Beane-esque moves, then nothing happened.

I've decided to give the new group the benefit of the doubt.

I have no reason to doubt their sincerity in trying to make the Rays a winning organization.

Welcome
Welcome aboard Anonymous Hero.

I was in Atlanta this weekend and they were talking about the possible deal sending Baez to the Mets. They were convinced that it is a deal that would put the Mets over the top.

Four-way
The New York Daily News is flogging that mythical Hydra-headed deal.  Manny to the Mets from Boston; Baez to the Mets from us; Tejada to the Sox from Ballamer; Lugo to the O's from us; Gathright to the Sox from us; Marte to us from Boston; Jae So and/or Heilman (and possibly Kaz Matsui) to us from the Mets.

Matsui is being broached as a SS stopgap until BJ is ready.  Heck, might as well re-sign our AGon as take Matsui the Lesser.

But this one sounded very much like a deal the paper was sitting around fantasizing about for lack of anything else to do.  I mean, three AL East teams in the same swap?

Three way fantasy
Dreaming about a fair trade ...

Rays trade Huff, Gathright and Lugo for Arroyo and Bruce Chen.

Orioles trade Tejada and Chen for Manny Ramirez, Matt Clement and Lugo.

Boston trades Ramirez, Clement and Arroyo for Tejada, Huff and Gathright.

In a side deal, the Rays trade Baez to the Mets for Heilmann.

The Rays move 3 free-agents-to-be and a spare CF for 3 starting pitchers that the team desparately needs.

Bruce Chen?
Are you f'ing kidding me? I'd be happy to get Arroyo and Heilman....but the Rays won't deal Lugo anywhere unless Marte is involved.

Time value of players
Lugo isn't signed long-term. Therefore he ... isn't ... worth ... much ... in ... trade. He certainly isn't worth Marte.

You don't know that....
Teams get desperate the closer that they get to Spring Training. Last time I checked, Marte was being talked about in trade talks for Lugo earlier, so I figure that Lugo DOES have some value.

Guess what, teams can sign players to contracts at any time during the season. He could be signed the day after he was traded somewhere, if he felt it was the right thing to do. Teams try to get players to sign during the season because they feel that they can get a player cheaper than if he was on the FA Market.

Heilman
Start me or trade me. Sounds like he is asking for way out of NY

Heilman, to me...
projects to be a John Patterson-like starter. Is a great set-up man, but would be a #3 pitcher if inserted now and at-best would be a #2.

Seo is a #3-4 pitcher and could be a useful long reliever if forced to.

by Jacob Larsen on Dec 31, 2005 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

ya mean that?
Cause if you really mean that Patterson comp, Jake, I'll take Heilman in a heartbeat.  I mean, heck, look at the year Patterson just had:

31 starts, 198.1 IP, 185 K, 65 BB, 3.13 ERA, 2.95 BB/9, 8.3 K/9, 127 ERA+, 3.45 DIPS ERA (good for 11th best in the National League).

Umm, I'd take that.  From anybody.
