Nothing Riske

Sadly I have to report the Royals have signed David Riske to a one year deal with an option for a second season. Terms were not disclosed.

I'm not sure what the deal was with the Rays in this situation, possibly the length, or the cash when we find that out later.

More updates as they become available.

No Riske, no reward
I consider it my calling to get the bad puns out of the way so people don't have to wait around in dread...

But this is a little disturbing.  I suppose we won't really know until the numbers come out, but it's hard to believe the Royals were able to outbid us by that much.  But then again, they've suddenly been throwing money around like it grew on trees this offseason, and maybe Riske got bedazzled by that.  Who knows.  But yes, it's a little distressing.  Not suicide-inducing, but bothersome.

The Royals
Have been throwing money around foolishly for the last couple offseasons, witness the Mientkiewicz, Graffanino, and Sanders signings of last year.

Looking at that list
How many of those players from last year remain with KC?

by Jacob Larsen on Dec 21, 2006 12:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Last year
Glass said the payroll must be X amount of money and basically forced Baird(sp?) to spend money unwisely.

This offseason Moore is in charge and has, it seems been given full control.  You can say he's overpaid for players, but how can you not in this market?  Their farm system isn't as deep as ours, although they have high ceilings at the top and they're trying to change the culture, so when Gordon, Butler and Hoch get called up, that they're at least competitive and those players have a chance to push them over the top.

Gordon
Should be the starter at 3B out of the gates, let's not act like Moore has been smart in his deals, I mean Burgos and Sisco for Bannister and Gload.

Gordon
They're taking their time with him, nothing wrong with that.

As for Moore, he signed two of the relievers that most Rays fans wanted to sign.

Burgos sucked last year, so did Sisco.  I guess to them, getting a starter in Bannister is more important than Burgos.  You also don't know anything about his clubhouse interactions either, although I don't particularly like that deal.

As for Sisco, at this point anyway, he's not the high ceiling lefty he was a couple years ago.  Not only does he still have control problems, his velocity dropped this year.  Then there's this.  He got cut from his winter ball team.

You can not overspend
By simply not taking part in spending at all.

Didn't they do the same thing last year
and it bit them in the behind? I understand they are spending 'smarter' but Dotel is still recovering from his injury, Riske seems like a good reliever unless his defense isn't good behind him.

All and all throwing money at Gil Meche who becomes their ace...okay if you can honestly defend the money spent on GIL MECHE and say they'll be contending with GIL MECHE as their ace, well then either you're Socrates or out of your mind.

I don't
like the Meche signing, but he could turn out be an ace.  I don't think he will, but he might.  He's still got great stuff.

Good stuff, bad results
Edwin Jackson has great "stuff"(albeit with bad control) and he's barely gonna squeek into the Rays 25 man roster next season.

I highly doubt that Meche has anything near "Ace"-stuff.

If GIl Meche posts...
'ace' numbers...I will drink a jar of Barbaro's urine

I wouldn't go that far
The suggestion may be outlandish, but don't make a promise like that. You remember what happened to Aubrey when we won the posting bid for Iwamura.....

Eh...
I'd say this has about a 1.5% chance of happening, I feel safe with those odds, add in the murky future for our four(er...three) legged friend and I feel very secure.

Excuse me
That should read "Grudzielanek", not "Graffanino".

Only thing I can think of...
Would be us being scared by his declining K rates, I mean going from 78 in 77 innings (2004) to 48 in 72 (05) to 28 in 44 IP (06) isn't exactly good.

by R.J. Anderson on Dec 20, 2006 11:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
But other than last season, any low strikeout rates he had were accompanied by similarly low walk rates. And his HR/9 was at its lowest point in four seasons last year, impressive considering he pitched at Fenway and Comiskey.
