Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Rockies

So, the Rockies just added Rodrigo Lopez, and hes expected to become one of the 5 members of their rotation.  The Rockies had earlier added Buchholz and Hirsch from the Astros; neither of these two has a spot in the rotation as a consequence of the aforementioned Lopez trade.
Does anyone else think Baldelli to the Rockies for Hirsch and Buchholz becomes a strong possibility?

Strong possibility?
No, I don't think it is a strong possibility, at least no moreso than any of the other rumored offers we have gotten for Baldelli.

Re: Strong possibility?
It might be possible, but remember they have Wily Tavarez now...

True
Coors will mask his offensive incompetence, and his speed should be an asset in covering the large outfield there. I think he could end up being a sleeper next year.

Very True
However, I believe Rocco will be a bigger sleeper and his sleeper numbers that I've seen projected for him in the Trop would be inflated ALOT by Coors.

Too bad that they're not planning on giving us Atkins or Francis in a package for Rocco.

God no
Hirsch isn't a pitching prospect that I'd want, anyways. He's gonna get absolutely bombed if he pitches in Colorado.

Buchholz wouldn't even be considered a "throw-in", in my opinion.

Buchholz
has very good stuff when it's on.  He's been inconsistent, but he's a good pitcher.  He'd be more than a throw in, but neither of them would be the center piece of a package.  As you stated in your post above, Atkins or Francis would have to be the center piece.  Or, Tulo and a package of Hirsch and Buchholz would probably get it done too, but none of those things are happening.

Tulo
Why in the hell would we want Tulo when we got the same exact hitter pretty much in Brignac?

There's only 1 Dirtbag that I want on this team, and it ain't Tulo or Dukes(hyuk hyuk hyuk)...it's Longoria.

Re: Tulo
You realize that every major prospect outlet has Tulo as a better prospect than both Briggy and Longoria right?  Emotion aside, I think they could all three play in our infield at the same time.  If that deal was offered, I'd guarantee that the Rays would take it.  Two good young pitchers, and a big league ready SS with star ability.

Longoria and Briggy would play 2nd and 3rd in the future and all would be well in Devil Ray land.?

Re: Tulo
You're suggesting

Tulo - SS
Brigs - 3b
Longoria - 2b

Correct?

by R.J. Anderson on Jan 16, 2007 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

R.J.
That would probably be the way I would set it up.  However, I'd at least explore Briggy moving to 2B.  If he can handle SS, I don't see why he couldn't handle 2nd, and then we'd only have to move one player insead of 2.

Re: Tulo
I outright disagree with you.

The Rays have said on numerous occasions that we're not trading for prospects anymore. A trade for Tulo, Buchholz and Hirsch would be just that. If we're trading Rocco, it's going to be for established pitchers and hitters....not ones that have the potential to maybe become good major leaguers.

Re: Tulo
Well, all three have been in the big leagues already and all three are staying in the big leagues next year.

Tulo is a prospect with almost 100 ML at bats, and in those at bats showed great plate dicipline.  You can call him unproven, but he's already shown a lot to look forward to.  He's an elite talent.

And if, to go along with him, we could get a pitcher with a #2 ceiling who's polished, and a guy with upside like Buchholz, I think we'd be a better team overall.  Both today and long term.

Of course I'm a huge Bossman believer and you're not, so that's where the big differnce in opinion comes.  I think Bossman will come very close to replacing Rocco's offense next year if he were given a spot in CF everyday.  Certainly not in the power department, but his OBP, I believe would come close to making them an even player.

And in the future, I believe he'll be a better overall player.

100 ABs?
If we're hypothesizing how much a ceiling a player has after 100 ABs, write Delmon Young into the HOF and we might as well label Upton as an AAAA hitter.

How's he an elite talent, exactly? He wasn't as great of a contact hitter as Brignac or Longoria appear to be already, looking at his stats. His ex-teammate out-homered his minor league career high in his debut season, in fact. Tulo hit .240 in his call-up, how is that showing that he could become a great future hitter?

Upton needs to prove that he can hit in the majors, which he has yet to do, before you can say that he could match Rocco's numbers in CF.

I'm sorry, but I don't want 2 unknowns(like Hirsch and Buchholz) who have pitched in the NL and a player who has immense potential(albeit in only 100 ABs) to be traded for a MLB vet who is showing "sleeper" power even after he missed a full season due to an injury.

Something neat that I noticed
Tulo and Benzo had almost identical BB and K totals, with Tulo edging him out by .020 in Average.
