DY Snubbed

Dustin Pedroia was named the American ROY over Delmon Young.

Pedroia 139 G 8 HR 86 R 50 RBI 7 SB
Young   162 G 13 HR 65 R 93 RBI 10 SB

Star-divide

Young played everyday, through his minor injuries and seemed to be getting better as the season went on. Young also made outstanding plays in the field that prevented a lot of runs. Pedroia plays for the Red Sox and they made it to the playoffs so he gets the award.

While I don't doubt that Pedroia was worthy of the nomination and I knew it was between the two of them, I believe this has more to do with who the two play for and not their performance on the field. It seems that Rays are snubbed because they play on the Rays and not the Sox or Yanks.

Re: DY Snubbed
Pedroia got on base at a MUCH better rate and actually had a higher SLG%. No contest, Pedroia wins.

DP was better
For this year at least.

Re: DP was better
I agree with RJ.

While Delmon played every game and led all rookies in a good majority of categories, Delmon's OBP and SLG %ages were horrendous.

The thing about DP is that he's got very little ceiling left from what he did in his rookie campaign. If he's going to be any better, it won't be much.

Delmon, on the other hand, has shown only a fraction of what he can do. Think if he would've hit singles or gotten sneaky doubles out of his GIDPs, he would've been a 200-hit rookie with a .350ish OBP(which is saying alot for a guy who still doesn't walk enough).

DY
Wasn't very good this year.  It was a solid rookie year, but not anywhere near DP's.

To be fair,
This was the Sporting News award, not the BBWAA official award. And in any case, Pedroia does deserve it.

Re: DY Snubbed
Just like Rockies players are slighted against for playing in Coors, the Sox players should be slighted against for playing at Fenway. You have balls, if hit at anyother park, would be pop outs. At Fenway, they are off the way. Pedroia had protection and played in 138 games. Give Delmon the same line up and home field his doubles would be up an daverage would be higher.

 Look at the home/away split...

Now take Delmon...

Do you guys honestly think that if Pedroia was a Ray he would have such a strong champagne?

I'm not sure about his champagne
But Bradbury kinda proved that "protection" doesn't exist, or at least doesn't work like people think, in fact he showed negative correlations for guys who had a batter behind them with an OPS .100 points higher.

Re: I'm not sure about his champagne
okay, I will buy that for now. Anyhow, explain how the man is hitting .351 at home and .280 on the road. 138 games as well...

You bring up a valid point
Pedroia did perform far better at home than on the road. Almost .2 points better in OPS to be exact. However park-neutral stats, while lowering the 'amazement level' that his production would lead you to believe, doesn't discount all of that production simply because it happened at a hitter-friendly home ballpark. Pedroia did so well at home; and not all of that is park-related. He was also a good hitter as well, better than Delmon IMO.

And games played shouldn't be held against him unless it is a far lower total. Just like Delmon shouldn't automatically win because he played in a lot of games and had higher quantitative totals while his rate production sucked.
