Camp, Velandia Free Agents

Shawn Camp and Jorge Velandia have been outrighted to Durham and have refused their assignments and have become free agents.
Velandia was good in the bigs but old. But Camp just is a waste of space and a 3-run lead.

[editor's note, by R.J. Anderson] Thanks to llraysfan for posting the diary, certainly this helps to clear out some 40 man room.

It certainly helps the congestion
For Camp's sake he should go play for Colorado, it did wonders for Herges / Hawkins.

Your welcome. Good move by Rays.

Re: Camp, Velandia Free Agents
I realize I am being stubborn in light of recent history, but I still think Camp can be a useful reliever, not great or even good, but in any given year, productive. 2007 in TB is the anomaly in his career in terms of walks and HRs allowed. I still maintain that he was sabotaged by the Rays' awful infield defense.

A pitcher who throws reasonably hard with terrific movement and sink always has a chance to succeed.

No doubt
That he was a scapegoat for the incredibly poor infield defense, but there really isn't any room for him on the Rays.

Re: No doubt
Oh yes, I agree he should not be kept at the expense of someone else. But I still insist that if there is room on the roster it wouldn't be such a bad idea.

On the other hand, a team can only claim rule 5s if they have fewer than 40 men on the roster, so the Rays may want to be sure they have room to make claims.

Re: Camp, Velandia Free Agents
Does anyone know how he got released? I heard a rumor about his meeting, something about he wanted more money. Did he have an option? Cause if he did I will tell the story I heard....made me laugh, but I don't want to say it for the risk of being completely wrong, as I have been on a few posts as of late.

He was arb eligible
So your story might add up that he wanted a higher number figure towards ARB but his performance wasn't worth the discussion.

That was sensible R.J.
Humorous R.J. wants to hear the story.
