Rule 5 draft question

Well, I'm still new to this and im not quite sure with all the rules when it comes to off season acquisition, but ive noticed that we are trying to "protect" some minor leaguers from the rule 5 draft.....

I think that its safe to assume that since we are trying to protect our prospects, i am assuming that other teams are doing the same......

I remember when the Reds took Josh Hamilton, and i was wondering if there is anyway we can pick up a good reliever, the same way they took Josh from us with this concept of the "rule 5 draft?"

and.... what do we lose by gaining these players..

I don't really know the eligible pool
Enough to say whether we may get something useful out of the Rule 5 draft this year. But if we do select someone, we don't really lose anything besides $50,000. We have to keep our draftee on the major league roster for a full season, but the only "cost" is the fee. If we don't keep the player on the major league roster for the full year, we have to offer him back to his original team for $25,000. So essentially we risk losing $25,000.

The A's got Jay Marshall last year
He wasn't great, but his delivery made him attractive.

How it works
The Rule 5 essentially prevents teams from hording too many prospects by allowing other teams to draft older prospects who the team has not placed (i.e., "protected") on its 40-man roster.  Under the rules, a team must place a minor leaguer on its 40-man roster after his fourth season (or fifth season if he signed at age 18 or younger), or else he is eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft.

As mentioned above, the "catch" is that the team must keep the player on its active 25-man roster for the following full season (he can spend time on the DL, but he must spend 90 days on the active roster and cannot be sent to the minors).  Thus, the player has to be good enough to contribute somewhat at the major league level.

Most of the Rule 5 players who stick are players with some upside but enough ability to play a minor role on the current team -- relief pitchers (especially left-handeders who can fill a LOOGY role), backup catchers, utility infielders, and fifth outfielders.
