Jackson Named # 5 Starter
This was originally a diary
It appears that Jackson has won the battle for slot 5 in the rotation. Howell was optioned to AAA, along with Corcoran and Dohmann was outrighted.
Hopefully this will work out for the Rays. I'm not really sure about it. I thought Howell was the better choice in the long run.

[editor's note, by R.J. Anderson] Just wanted to update folks on the other transactions, Tim Corcoran was sent to AAA, and Scott Dohmann was outrighted, he is off of the 40 man roster.

Re: Jackson Named # 5 Starter
If Howell goes to Durham, pitches well, he'll get another chance this season. Heck, I'm sure there will be an opportunity when someone sux, let alone any injury that forces us to call someone up.
And just to further beat a dead horse...we kept Dohmann on the 40 man roster why??? Instead of a certain tattooed OF in Cincy.

Why am I not drinking beer in Clearwater this afternoon? One of the last good chances to see the team outdoors in the sun. Damn work.

Re: Jackson Named # 5 Starter
Kinda sad how McClung has struggled. Do you expect release tomorrow? It's the 45 day termination pay deadline with unconditional release waivers, so the Rays would only have to pay about a 1/4 of his salary. But then he's gone, and not resignable until May 15. If they just option him, they're on the hook, since nobody's likely to pick him up off waivers at $750K. Keep him and demote, or release? Can't imagine he's real tradeable right now, but I've been wrong before. 2PM EST is the deadline. Expect any other news tomorrow?
The Jackson choice is no surprise - got to see what he can do. Howell's likely to see action this season as the first guy up to start for any need. He's likely to get 10 or more starts even if everybody sticks. With Fossum and Seo likely having "Relief pitcher / o.b.o." stitched on their jerseys, he could get lots more than that.
