Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

David Price

Um, why haven't we signed this guy yet?  He's the college player of the year and, you may have noticed, we kinda need pitching.  I'm hoping now that the trade deadline has passed the DRO does NOTHING but work on getting this deal done.  Pay the man his money!  This guy could easily be on the opening day roster, 2009.  Anyone got the inside scoop on these negotiations?

On an equally important note, doesn't the devil ray logo in the upper left corner of this site kinda look like the Burger King guy?

Re: David Price
He'll be signed by the deadline, it's about as sure of a thing as you can get.

And now that you mentioned it yes, although we insist it's based on Todd Kalas.

Re: David Price
Because he doesn't want to sign yet.  It doesn't make sense for him to.  If he signs before all the other top picks, he loses leverage.  He wants the biggest deal possible.  It's the Rays being cheap, it's Price keeping leverage.

Re: David Price
There were whispers of him being sent here (Single A- Hudson Valley) for awhile, and then I heard something about him not wanting to start that low. I don't know how much of that is true but thats what I've heard.

Re: David Price
Personally I wouldn't send him that low, what good is him dominating for one or two months against (basically) fresh out of college and high schoolers?

I'd probably start him in Columbus, at least that way he's looking at AA/AAA end of next year and the bigs sometime in 2009.

Re: David Price
If true, this might have something to do with it:

2006 draft advanced college pitchers, level of pro debut -
Andrew Miller: A+
Greg Reynolds: A+
Tim Lincecum: A- and A+
Brandon Morrow: Rookie and A+
Max Scherzer: A+ (2007)
Ian Kennedy: A-
Joba Chamberlain: A+ (2007)

Since he probably won't sign until Aug. 15th, with only a couple weeks left in the season, it really doesn't matter where he starts (if he pitches at all this year).

Re: David Price
Consider that Price is supposedly better than any of those guys coming out of college and A+ should be no problem for him.

Re: David Price
I thought sending him here was a bad idea too. I saw guys get totally overmatched when Waechter was here...and he wasn't even that good. I don't think having Price face guys so below his level is beneficial to him.

Re: David Price
Don't forget we'll need a spot on the 40-Man roster for him.  Waiting until the last minute helps give him a rest since he threw a lot of innings/pitches with Vandy and allows us to coincide the signing with us dumping Fossum off on someone else.

Re: David Price
Well, if we sign him to a MLB deal, yes, but remember Evan signed a minor league deal for some excess cash.

Re: David Price
That's not to say I don't doubt it will take a MLB deal.

Re: David Price
I can't imagine a guy like Price taking anything less than a ML Contract.  Just seems unlikely.
