Schilling Wants to be a Ray?

From Topkin's blog

Schilling just raved about the Rays on his blog (38pitches.com) and on his Tuesday morning radio show on Boston's WEEI, where he also talked about how much he loves the Tampa Bay area.

Then he went event further, saying he would be interested in playing for the Rays next season. "It's one of those situations you'd certainly look at,'' he said.

I am Nostradamus!

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
I still don't want him on this team. He is a 41 year old pitcher who is having injury problems. I have hated him forever and I will hate him if he comes to the Rays.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
He's 40, not 41, and according to him the arm shouldn't be a concern.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
He will be 41 in November so he would be 41 when he pitched for us is what i meant.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
He is the best player by far on a diluted market, and he would buy (figuratively) time for Price/Niemann/Talbot/McGee/Davis or whoever to develop.   Like it or not, someone will pay the price, because market forces will drive his price up.  The man lives for the spotlight, and is a horse.  I wouldn't go farther than 2 years but its something to indeed consider.

Knowing Andrew's contract tendencies
He's very creative; I'd assume there would be out clauses based on performances and such.

Re: Knowing Andrew's contract tendencies
To paraphrase myself later in this very thread, Schill won't sign a clause-laden contract. He's a vet and will be in demand. He doesn't have to. People don't give up guaranteed money when they don't have to.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
Did you miss the first 6,342 outlandish things that Schilling has said in his career and later retracted?

Schilling loves to make headlines and that is all this is.  Making headlines.

Re: Only 6,342?
Schilling headlines are better than the Dukes/Hamilton/Brazelton/Young/Upton/Salas headlines that we have had in the past.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's signed.
The owners would be able to say, "See, we signed a big star."

It would also be likely to put some more people in the stands when he pitches, even if they're Red Sox fans.

I'm not put off by what he says, frankly.  He's not exactly a shy, retiring guy.  Let him say what he wants.  If he can pitch well, it would give time for the kids to get more development, and anyway, there might be something that could be learned from him.  I haven't heard that he's bad in the clubhouse (but I haven't heard that he's the great clubhouse guy, either.)

I would rather have him starting than Sonnenstine.

And to really put the punctuation mark on things, would you rather they went after veteran Curt Schilling or veteran Brett Tomko (who will undoubtedly get canned in LA with his 2-11 record)?

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
I gotta say, you called it RJ.

To iterate what I said on the BBS, I think this would be one of the smartest moves the NDRO could make. It would bring a great deal of media attention to the area, and would boost attendance from bandwagon Red Sox fans who love Schilling.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
You think that the Red Sox fans would still be rooting for him if he came here? I hate any player that left our team for another team, especially when they say something about us, and with Schill's mouth, you know he will say something stupid.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
Wade Boggs played for the Yankees after leaving Boston and a lot of Bostonians still love him. Even if Schilling says they play in a rat infested, haunted, too old for its own good, rundown POS stadium I doubt they'd even twitch, hell Bill Simmons trashes the actual stadium all the time.

Also I used to get bothered by guys like Geoff Blum saying crap, but then I'm reminded of an old adage; who the hell is Geoff Blum anyways?

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
Agreed, a one or two year deal for Schill to hit some strikeout milestones and kick the asses of the young starters would be a terrific move for the NDRO, if they can pull it off...I'm still holding out hope he decides to come back here to Philly and finish things off here though..

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
Schilling could bring a lot more than a potentially good arm.  He can bring a wealth of experience that can help our extremely young starting rotation.

We sign one Curt Schilling, we might end up with at least three more.

He helped Kaz
I always hate bringing up veteran/ leadership qualities but he told Kaz some advice that has seemingly helped so I guess it's worth a shot.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
I think Schilling read the "38 pitches" entry on this site, thought it made alot of sense, and commented accordingly.  And I think it makes alot of sense too.  Being a big fish in a small pond is appealing for one with an insatiable ego.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
The move would be a benefit to both the Rays and Schilling, the latter gets to be a potential face of three franchises and their 'status reaching' seasons (D-Backs, Sox, Rays) I can't think of many that have partaken in similar roles over the years for three different organizations.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
Ignoring the fact that he's a scumbag, what is to say he can continue to pitch effectively? If I remember correctly he hasn't pitched a good game since May. It sure seems like he's wearing down. I'm sure he would never sign an inscentive-based contract, so why does it make sense for a small market team to risk a sizable chunk of their payroll?

Incorrect
Of Schillings 18 starts:

13 of 6+ innings pitched
9 of less than 4 ER
12 of 4 ER or less

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 22, 2007 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Incorrect
Since his near no hitter he's only had 1 start that was good (8/12 @ Bal). His other four starts were terrible.

Rocked by the Angels (5 runs)
Rocked by the Angels (4 runs)
Rocked by the Braves (6 runs)
Rocked by the Rockies (lol) (6 runs)

This month he's pitched 18 innings and given up 10 runs. His 1.34 WHIP doesn't knock my sawks off. Neither does a 0.7 K/9 (note that both of these stats include his pre-injury games)

I just don't see him as being worth at least twice as much as the next highest paid player on the team.

by Top Gun Numba 1 on Aug 22, 2007 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Incorrect
He'd only be highest paid due to the formation of the team; all arb / pre arb players, you know this.

Write this month's starts off --I'm assuming they were injury based results-- and he'd have a 4.2 ERA; that with Manny in left and Willy Mo playing right as well as pitching in Fenway, you don't think he'd be better down here?

Re: Incorrect
Weren't you the writer who illuminated how historically bad the Rays defense is?

I'd presonally rather see us take a run at Maddux. I think Maddux is more cerebral, and remember the immediate benefit he brought to LA midseason when the Cubs traded him there? Maddux is smarter and a better pitcher. He's only 1 year older. Not only that but he isn't a loud mouthed ass. That's gotta count for something.

Re: Incorrect
Yes, our middle infield defense is the definition of the word suck, HOWEVAH! Our OF defense > their's, and I think we'll fix whatever position Aki won't play with a defensive player like Iguchi or McDonald / Vizquel.

Maddux has a team and player option, I doubt they let him go.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
Glavine and Pettitte both have player options. You don't think there is any chance either would consider TB? If so, I would prefer either, although it is hard to dismiss Schilling as much as I do not like him and am leery about his continued effectiveness and about how well his act would go over in this clubhouse. I also wonder if he isn't using TB as a stalking horse to begin his negotiations.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
It's possible that Schill would use us as a pawn, although I can't help but think if he were doing so that he'd name someone more uh...fiscally promiscuous than the Rays.

Glavine's option is guaranteed with three more innings and Pettite will probably stay in NY.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 22, 2007 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
I'm with the stalking horse theory. Look, the guy's gonna need a job next year, so almost no one - except the Yankees - are getting written off, and he'd probably backtrack on that position if he felt he needed to. Frankly, kissing up to New York might be his best strategy for landing back in Beantown.

The catch for me is Schill's desire to win, and without a number of other changes I don't see '08 as the Rays breakthrough year just yet. You're still gonna need a better pen (among other things), and I'm not convinced Salas, Dohmann, Reyes, and Wheeler constitute the core of a decent one. And there's not a lot of great additions on the market.

That said, I think it would be a great move for the Rays to pursue him loudly. Landing him would improve the market perception of the franchise, encourage key current players, and send the right message. The money is very much there - Tampa could easily and profitably double their payroll. Much as the guy bugs the crap out of me as well, I hope it happens for you. I'm just thinking he's playing you.

Re: Schilling Wants to be a Ray?
Of course, it could mean he sees a team on the verge and thinks if he appears to be the missing piece of the puzzle it solidifies his reputation as a winner.
