Poll Time

Joe Maddon got a bullpen last Monday, and since there have been no questionable decisions (a la appearances, benchings, ect.) so, would you approve of Maddon returning next year, assuming the past six days have shown us that Maddon is a fully competent manager when he has 'gasp'tools to work with?

Re: Poll Time
I vote yes for his return, When you have better players alot of "best" things happen. One of his best qualities is his understanding of talent and how best to cultivate it. Now that he has the better tools to work with it is easier to see the good things he has done and also easier to see that some of the bad attributed to him was more than likely the players that were not "big league" material.

Re: Poll Time
I agree with you. People would get mad at Maddon when he put people in but back then he had no one better to put in. Now that he has a bullpen he seems to be using it well and I hope it continues.

I don't know but the players seem to like him and he  is a pretty nice guy after talking to him a couple of times.

Re: Poll Time
I believe the Mudhens had Lou Piniella in Tampa Bay too. He guided them to last place finishes also.

Let Merlot Joe stay and see what he can do. Why make a change, why rock the boat? There's not a person on this planet that could manage these guys out of last place in the AL East with the group of misfits Merlot has to work with.

If anything, Madden deserves a raise and a vote of confidence as he has resurrected the career of Carlos Pena & Al Reyes. He's made a Big Leaguer out of Brendan Harris. BJ, Delmon? For their 1st two full seasons they're dynamite. Kaz & Shields are the only two Big Leaguers on the starting staff and their pitching well. So why would one want to deep six Joey when ownership has handed him lemons and he's made lemonade out of them?

It's time for a Pino Noir in Merlot Joe's honor(Merlot's give me a head ache). A Robert Sinskey is chilling, I know I'll enjoy it.

Re: Poll Time
Merlot Joe? I've seen nickname so often, but really it's horrendous. Oh wow he likes wine, awesome, let's throw that in front of the guy's name. I shall call Navarro Hamburgler Dioner because he likes hamburgers.

Re: Poll Time
Or just call Dioneer "Wimpy" as he can't even reach the Mendoza line as far as BA.

As far as "Merlot Joe"? It has a ring to it. If it sticks, and for some strange reason Stuey grows a heart, puts some $$ into this group of sandlot players, and starts winning. We may have copywrite infringement if MLB starts using the term and if the Mudhes start playing on Sunday Night Baseball. We may be in for some Big cash RJ. You never know....

As for nicknames for the rest of the group of players? I'll work on that one. However, as far as look-a-likes. Does Brendan Harris look just like the guy from Remember the Titans or what? He was the lineman who was Gary Berteir's best friend and didn't want to integrate the team.

He's the spitting image man....

STUUUUUUUUUEY.... Here Greedy, Greedy, Greedy....

I'd rather not listen to Joe Morgan.

Re: Poll Time
Thank you R. J. Why do people think that nickname is either clever, witty or relevant? It's so obvious and heavy handed. If anything, there are overtones of silly stereotypes in its use.

As for the question, I am a big supporter of Joe Maddon. I think he is an excellent judge of talent and admire his toughness and fortitude in the face of enormous frustrations. Recently, I have been concerned about what seems like a lack of discipline on the field. If he is unable to get his players to focus properly and play baseball the right way, he may have gotten to the limits of his usefullness. I still vote to extend him, but with less confidence than before.

Re: Poll Time
Not sure what made that nickname catch like wildfire,

I'm not a Maddon lover per say, but I do like how he handles his business privately, I know people want him to chew the pen out in public, but that just damages inner relations with players.

I respect him really, he knew heat would come his way, and he made no excuses for it, takes a big man to do so and I hope Maddon is very successful, hopefully he does it here.

Re: Poll Time
I meant to add that I've never seen a message board nickname spread like glitter, a user on Rays Baseball said it a few months ago, not sure if Mick is a member of that site or not.

Re: Poll Time
Are you guys kidding?  I think tonights game is a perfect example of why this clown needs to go back to coaching the bench in a different city.  Why leave Glover in when he is getting hammered?  Enough with the guy's confidence - this is the big leagues!  How soon you all forget the bunting with 1st and 3rds.  Friedman is too smart to excercise his option, and I think the change they have saved over the last few years needs to be spent.

Re: Poll Time
Hammered?

HR
Single
Triple to a gap
Line drive over Aki's indrawn glove

I don't know if I'd say hammered, but he had a rough night and Salas should be the 7th inning guy.

by R.J. Anderson on Aug 6, 2007 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Come on -
He was hammered.  It's against the rules to have an outfielder sit in the seats, and that's where he had to be for Casey.  And the triple was belted.  The line drive that went over Aki's glove would have been caught had he been playing back, but it was still a line drive.

He was hammered.

Re: Poll Time
The Rays need a strong personality in a leadership role who can change the well-ingrained culture of losing. This is especially true given the fact that there are no veteran players with winning experience on the roster.

I really don't think that Joe Madden has it in him to do it.
