How sweet it is...
I love seeing the “Fenway Faithful” booing and making an early run to the exits.
Advantage: Rays.

Rolen was able to return to form for the first half of 2006
only to see the shoulder give out again.
I’m not saying he can’t stay healthy, but they are often a reoccurring injury.
by Hardcore Legend on Oct 13, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Richie Sexson came off a torn labrum to run a .263/.369/.541, 39 HR as a right-handed hitter in Safeco year.
He dropped to .264/.338/.504 the next year, but that’s because he sucked, not because of the labrum injury recurring. BJ’s tougher than Sexson, he can come back from it.

Hopefully the increased revenues from this and next year will be enough for us to extend a realistic offer to BJ. I think he enjoys playing for this team/Maddon, but with the way the fans have treated him, I’m not fully confident that he’ll opt to stay. Here’s to hoping the FO makes him a rich man this offseason.

Where does BJ want to play?
Does he want to stay in CF or does he have visions of ever moving back to the MIF?
by Hardcore Legend on Oct 13, 2008 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He wants to play in the middle of the field
But I think he knows deep down that he’s an exceptional CF now.
by kericr on Oct 13, 2008 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Does he really?
I hadn’t heard him say that at any point this season, but I have to suspect that he is aware that he is a far above average CF and a decidedly average IF. Not to mention, his arm would be completely wasted if he weren’t playing the outfield.
by NY Tyler on Oct 13, 2008 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He said it last year when they moved him to CF after coming off the DL
And I don’t think he’d be an adequate IF at all. As a matter of fact, I think he’d be terrible. He flat out did not improve in his ability to play the infield once he got above A-ball. The mere fact that he refused to change positions cost him almost 2 years in the majors.
by kericr on Oct 13, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There is more money in being a IF'er
ask Soriano. He wanted to stay at 2B for that very reason. A 2B with 50 HR potential is worth more than an OF’er with 50 HR potential, in the minds of GMs. Defense be damned.

it’s pretty obvious which side he wants to win. Anything the Rays hit, he is excited about the routine play the Red Sox just made. When the Saux hit it, it is the greatest single offensive feat in the history of the game.

by walkoffwalk on Oct 13, 2008 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I keep saying this
This is not a compliment. Yes, Lamar deserves credit for a lot of the talented youth on this team. But he deserves credit because he could do absolutely nothing with what he had, and his team got decimated year after year after year as a result.
It’s not like the Rays have 10 years of 1st rounders on their roster. The only thing Lamar did for this current incarnation of the Rays is stockpile the farm system by losing tons of games.

But in terms of what he’s contributed to this team and it’s success, it’s been limited. Except for May and early June, He’s been hurt and he’s struggled. I’m sure he’s injured, and I’m sure he’ll be back next year, or the year after if it’s a long-recovery injury, as the same old Kaz.

Quote from OTM
I wasn’t kidding in the thread. Rays: We get 2 outs rather than 3 in our innings, and you let us use DP, Youks, and Bay in the lineup over and over and over. I’m pretty sure we’d have a better shot. Much more balanced in that Rays’ lineup.
They’re not in full-panic mode over there; but they’re damn close.
by kericr on Oct 13, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
The Rays showed they were playoff ready in September when they refused to give up the division, and the Sox showed that they were concerned about this team when they effectively conceded the division after the 2nd home game in the last series of the year. You play a team 18 times in a year, pry the division title from them, then you meet them in the playoffs? The team that wins the series isn’t going to rely on veterans or clutch or intangibles. The team that wins the series is going to be the team that is the best team.

OT: but phillies winning right now 7-5 bottom of the 8th 2 outs
would we be favored against the phillies in the WS?

Replying to the title of this thread.
Jon Lester is a very good pitcher: he pitched well throughout the season, and against the Angels in the playoffs. His stuff wasn’t working today, and he left a bunch of fastballs up in the zone to be clobbered. It can, and does, happen to every pitcher. Lester also has pitched way more innings this season than at any point in his career, and could well be experiencing fatigue.
Only an idiot like Buck Martinez would proclaim Lester “the best pitcher in baseball.” That distinction would more accurately go to Roy Halladay.
Matt Garza was really good today (although he should have been lifted after 6). Considering how Delmon Young has panned out for Minnesota this season, that trade is looking like a steal for the Rays.
"It's just a tiny little nick, but it hurts when I get champagne in there."

and yes he might now be him self right now, but kaz is also pitching like shit lately which it looks like he might also not be healthy

He really only got touched up in one inning
His biggest problem was he missed a few spots and his PC.
As far as Garza pitching the 7th. the only reason to pull him facing the bottom of the Sox lineup was if you were thinking about skipping Kaz’s next start. His PC was okay. He had the black-hole that is the Sox 8-9-1 hitters up. Let him pitch now, what are you saving him for. Save the Bullpen.
