so matt stairs for their DH?
at least we wouldnt have to have brett myers hitting against us if we can beat boston 1 more time
when you think .500 is the best a team can do and they are currently playing in the ALCS for a chance to advance to the WS, you have to stop and think that the future of that team is going to be amazing. GO TB RAYS!
their offense really is overrated in my opinion
howard is too hit and miss, utley has been horrible the past couple of months, burrell is still too inconsistent, rollins isnt that good this year, victorino is a pretty good hitter though and jason werth is pretty good as well

How is Utley the 2nd best player in the NL?
by Top Gun Numba 1 on Oct 16, 2008 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions
I was looking at league total, he's 7th in VORP in the NL
As for defense, players above him include Pujols, Reyes, and Wright, all above average defenders. But defense doesn’t matter that much.
by Top Gun Numba 1 on Oct 16, 2008 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions
But defense doesn’t matter that much.
Yes, it really does. Utley is the best defensive 2B in the league.
by R.J. Anderson on Oct 16, 2008 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Defense doesn't matter that much. Offense is more important.
Also, without looking it up, I’d imagine that Matsui, Barmes (toward the end of the year), Durham, and maybe even Phillips would give him a run for his defensive money.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s very good, but it’s hilarious to think of him as the 2nd most valuable player in the NL.

You're quite wrong about the value of defense.
Preventing a run is just as good as creating one.

by Aaron Campeau on Oct 16, 2008 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions
It most certainly does, and if you don't understand that you aren't capable of properly judging player value.
He’s the best in the defensive 2B in NL. That’s a valuable player if he hit like a league average 2B. Wright is good, Reyes is ~above average, Utley is elite.
In addition, his BABIP was ~.050 lower than it should have been and his peripherals were better this year than any other year of his career.
I’m not sure if he’s the second best player in the N.L., but he’s definitely in the conversation.

Man I was just “told” by forums user “acblue.”
A great hitter can add 80 or 90 runs to his team on offense.
A great defender can subtract maybe 20-25 runs from the other team.
Golly, which is more valuable?
by Top Gun Numba 1 on Oct 16, 2008 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions
HanRam VORP was 80 this year, Pujols was 90
by Top Gun Numba 1 on Oct 16, 2008 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions
I really hate this argument. VORP is a convenient metric for measuring runs gained.
Find me a preferable metric, but I’d still say great hitters add 4 or 5 times as many runs as great defenders take away

by R.J. Anderson on Oct 16, 2008 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Try BRAA and add 20 runs. That's better than VORP as a VORP tool.
Pujols is the best this year at about 90, and that’s the highest by far.
Utley is somewhere around 30-40 runs better than a replacement level second baseman defensively.
Utley is a damn good player. He may not be 2nd best in the NL but he’s top 5.
I'll just assume we're talking about position players here.
Are you saying Utley is better than all but 4 of these guys:
Pujols, Wright, Reyes, Hanny, Beltran, Braun, ManRam, Mccann, Martin?

Again
Utley: .292/.380/.535, below average BABIP for his LD rate, gold glove 2B.
Hanley: .301/.400/.540, atrocious defender at SS, should make the BJ Upton switch to CF.
The difference in production was .025 OPS points. The defense more than makes up that.

Utley is roughly Hanley with the bat.
Utley is obviously better than Hanley. And HanRam has been way worse than -10 at SS in recent years. He’s been historically bad before this year. And I can’t believe he’s just suddenly turned a corner.

Ok
Better than Wright (maybe just offensively even), Reyes (not even close), Hanley (similar offensively, Hanley plays a worse SS than Jose Vidro would), Braun (defense matters, 2B is more important than LF too), Manny (barely even above average with his defense, pre-trade. 2 months isn’t a big enough sample to assume that’s who Manny really is), McCann, Martin. Really? Russell Martin? He’s not even the best player on his own team.

No because the value of one run is worth more in a pitcher's park.
Less runs are scored there so if he hit .280/.370/.520 in Dodger Stadium he’d be just as valuable as if he hit .300/.385/.540 in Citizen’s Bank Park.
