We better fucking win Game 6 or we are going to lose the damn series!

If the Rays don’t win game 6, all of the pressure shifts back on them & the fucking Red Sox are relentless in the post season. The Rays have to win Saturday night!

Positive: Dorm to myself tonight so I have a lot of happy time and might break my roommates guitar.

The 9th was more Longoria than Howell

If Youk wasn’t in scoring position, Howell would probably have pitched to Bay, and game could be different.

Carlos and Victor Zambrano have exactly the same number of career postseason wins. Who would have thought?

It doesnt matter

who blow this game or not. If you are going to the game thursday, be loud, be proud and rally this team. Offensively we need to keep it up and our pitching in front of our home crowd will back them up. We would of taken 2 outta 3 at Fenway even before we left. So we cant really complain. We have our best pitcher throwing at home and a rested bullpen again. We still only have to win just one against them winning two. Lets go!!!!!!~!

I really disagreed with leaving Wheeler in and not because of righty lefty match-ups, but because he was working up in the zone the whole night.

That last at bat to Crisp, he threw 6 straight 88mph fastballs above the belt. That’s asking for trouble. And he was up the 3 previous batters. He was playing with fire and got burned.

exactly

i wasnt even surprised Crisp lined that one… not at all, i was expecting it, in fact. honestly, wtf was Maddon thinking… its like he got a call in the 7th, “yo Joe, we really need the revenue from a game 6… why not let us clinch this at the Trop”

tonight is a very good night to reflect 30 minutes on this loss and move on. 2 out of 3 at Fenway is great. Does it suck to be 9 outs away from th WS and blow it….of course. But the Rays can’t let it get to them or they will be in trouble. We got 2 games at home…..keep cool and win it

But the fact is that the 8th was among the worst single innings of bullpen management I have ever seen.

no, seriously.

I watched this game alone at a goddamn new york sports bar with a bunch of massholes surrounding the pool table, karaokeing “Xanadu”. I have had no feedback on the 8th. I really have a hard time remembering a comparable managerial fuckup since Grady Little. And I couldn’t sort my way through the game thread without smashing my head against my desk until I slip into the warm bath of oblivion. So…what’s the word. Was it as bad as I think it was?

Swell.

I’m not a Rays fan, but for the next two days I have to hear about the overwhelming grittiness of the Red Sox and hw the Rays inexperience has them freezing up like deer in headlights.

I AM a NY Giants fan, though, and this reminds me of the Super Bowl when the Pats pulled ahead to take the lead in the last 2 and a half minutes. On one hand I was freaking out. On the other hand, if at the beginning of the game, I could have bought into that situation of the Giants within scoring distance, i would have.

In the same way, I think your team’ll be fine. If at the start of the series, you could have had the Rays coming back to Tampa Bay up 3-2 with Shields and Sonnanstine coming up, would you have taken it in a heartbeat?

Momentum is overrated. You’ll be fine. Good luck!

of course it depends if we win the series

if we lose the series this becomes the biggest choke job in sports history.

if we lose the series can you post a single incident that is a biggest total choke job?

No

This was an epic collapse. If we lose the series we will be the laughingstock of all sports. That is a fact. However i do believe we will win the series. I’m just ignorant to the point to ignore the fact that if we do lose that we have set a new standard for choking.

wait a second. i got distracted by beers.

Dude is right w/ his numbers. The Red Sox’s win probability was never as low in 2004 as it was tonight when Maddon shat the bed. But it still doesn’t change the fact that debating “shittiest losses” or “worst collapses” based on win probabilities makes you a robot. So, yeah, both were shitty, and were shitty on more extreme or milder levels for different people based on different things that do not involve decimal places, so, really, who cares? They were both really shitty?

Unless you are writing a book whose sales depend on the accurate mathematical ranking of shittiness of sports losses independent of the humanness and irrationality of sports fans/people.

The numbers are important, but "choking" is subjective.

1995 AL West, 2007 NL East, Oilers blowing a 35-3 3rd quarter lead in the 1992 AFC playoffs, etc etc etc. These are all far bigger chokejobs than the Rays losing this series. (Which, for the record, they most likely will not.)

J.K.L.

by acblue on Oct 17, 2008 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Rays lose this series it will be mathematically worse than the OIlers blowing that lead….Just saying though…

by matthan on Oct 17, 2008 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do not disagree

I can care less about the ranking of what is the worst. It just seems some people are just totally ignorant of the fact of the absolute magnitude of this choke. I’m sure if you researched you’d find a bigger one. That isn’t the point. The point is this was absolutely huge. It is not as easy as just turning the page and starting anew. The Rays really have their biggest challenge of the year upcoming.

by matthan on Oct 17, 2008 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So you are raking this possible collapse as the "worst in sports history"

based 100% on mathematical win percentages.

Which makes total sense if you are a computer and are attempting to defeat Kasparov.

Also, um, two games left to be played.

And, also, um, why is nobody discussing how absolutely terrible Maddon was tonight?

by calmer than you are on Oct 17, 2008 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In a season of challenges, it only makes sense.

1) Everything the Rays have done this season has been hard earned. Why not the ALCS.
2) We only needed 1 win in Boston. We got 2.
3) The Rays are playing in the ALCS.
4) We weren’t supposed to beat Beckett and Lester. Why not beat them twice?
5) We play our best when everything looks the worst.

The fact is we weren’t supposed to win tonight. We were the dog on the mound and we were playing in Fenway. We were happy taking it 3-2 back to the Trop. Losing a 7 run lead late hurt us all. But if we look at the facts we are exactly where we wanted to be. RJ

RJ, I’ll end my boycott for just this moment. That has to have been the biggest clusterfuck in our lives. To allow 2 relievers to blow a 7 run lead with nine outs to go, well, “incompetent” isn’t a strong enough word to use to describe Joe’s performance. I won’t defend Wheeler, but why everyone focuses on the 8th when the RSox scored 4 in the 7th is beyond me. And I’ll be hating Joe forever now. Miller v. Ortiz, 1-11, and JP v. Ortiz 1-9. The Ortiz HR in the 7th is what gave them life and hope.

And if you see Joe, can you ask him why Mr. Perez is on the team. Thanks. I thought it was pinch running and defensive replacement and since CC and BJ won’t be replaced for defensive purposes, who is left? Perez gets that Pedroia ball that Gross decided to gift for a hit. Oh, and I hate Gabe Gross too. What an asshat. Gabe, big lead and you risk extra bases for a chance at the out, especially with 2 out and their big booper, long overdue for the HR, coming up.

And for what really bothers me, why save Shields? Joe is new at this postseason stuff, at least as manager, and so I wonder if he truly understands the difference between now and the regular season. You close out the damn clinching game out. You give the ball to Shields and tell him to get 9 outs before he gives up 7 runs. If he does his job, 3 inning save. And for any naysayers, if we can’t trust Shields to get 9 before he gives up 7, then what hope is there for Saturday? Home field isn’t worth that much.

Lastly, for those in a state of complete and utter denial, screw that shite about we should be happy up 3-2. Sorry, but wins are even more precious than outs, and you don’t, you simply don’t, give away a 7 run lead with nine outs to go in a seven game series. I’m not usually superstitious, but this has bad, bad, bad omen written all over it. And so, hopefully, the Furies are merely a myth, since if they exist, they are none too pleased with the Rays today.

Sorry, one more, but RJ, my first love, the Dodgers, well, I’m sure you are aware of the 2 2-run jacks. As bad as that was, the Dodgers pen would have still held a 7 run lead [as they gave up the four]. As I said, worst clusterfuck of our lives.

Even one more. For another thing you can say to Joe if you see him, well, please ask him why he walked Mr. Can’t Hit The Offspeed Stuff [Bay] in favor of Drew, who was either 3-6 or 4-7 against JP. Tell Joe that we can now make it 4-7 or 5-8. Lefty v lefty don’t mean squat when it’s 3-6 or 4-7. And as I always say, when Bay hits an offspeed pitch, please let me know.

Sorry, even more. But I do really hate Joe. To speak of 2 fellows not very happy right now. Joe, you were supposed to have their backs. Where in the fuck where you?

I feel like it’s my fault you guys lost. I think I’m cursed – any team I root for will have terrible bullpen meltdowns. I’m a die-hard Mets fan, which should explain at least a part of that. But consider that the last time I rooted for a non-Mets team as much as I am for this Rays team was in 2001, for the Yankees (post 9/11, NY pride….I’ve despised them the rest of my life, before and since), and that was the year that Mariano blew the ONLY postseason save of his career, in Game 7 of the World Series. Then last night happened. I’m truly sorry…I’m not gonna watch anymore games, b/c I really want you guys to win it all, and you don’t need the Mets bad bullpen mojo.

Two examples to take heart from

1. The Pujols HR off Lidge in the 2005 NLCS. Everyone thought the Astros were cooked after being on the verge of clinching, yet they came out and won the next game and ended the series.

2. The Lightning’s loss to Philly in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004. Up 3 games to 2 and by a goal with less than a minute to go in Philly, the Lightning saw the Flyers tie it up and win in OT. The Bolts then returned home and took Game 7 two nights later, even though everyone thought they’d be shellshocked.

I'm Here to Tell You Number (1)

Except that Oswalt had to win in St. Louis—you guys have your ace at home.

Don’t hate the Sox, but as a sometimes-Marlin fan, I would like to see the Rays keep Florida’s MLB playoff series win streak intact. I had figured the Sox would win Thursday, so the ramifications just aren’t that big.

I’m still sure the Rays will win the series.

But, man, using Miller to face Ortiz in that spot has got to be the default position for ANY manager. If you DON’T use him there, you’ve got to tell us why. And Maddon is simply saying, “Ah, the irony.”

Miller got off to a horrible start for the ‘Stros last year. But I can remember times when Miller and his 6.00+ ERA was brought in to face Ryan Howard—and he’d get him, too.

But I don’t have to tell you this: you know Miller had a .235 BA against lefties in ’08.

I to be honest was asleep when Wheeler was getting his ass handed to him, so I’ll neither attack nor defend that part of it. But I can say this: if Miller gets Ortiz, it doesn’t matter what happens in the eighth.

Anyway, I’ll offer the go Rays mojo, but I don’t think you’ll need it. The fact that the Rays remain the better team will be enough.

Alright, time to deport Bourn.

you can't celebrate before it's over

The Rays early celebration was cocky. Maybe it was karma?

I hope it doesn't come back to haunt me

but part of me was rooting for boston to win because I won game 6 tickets. Now all I need is Shields to dominate like he should and I’ll be getting wasted in St. Pete in 36 hours.

I'm going into the razor blade business

Everybody who’s in panic mode, please post your email addresses so I know how to get a hold of you. I’m going to make a killing selling razor blades to all of you on suicide watch, pun intended.

I hope the Rays aren’t panicking like the loads of idiots on this site. Calm the hell down. It was not a colossal meltdown. Your judgement of what happened is beyond cloudy. Hopefully, you’ve read the postgame comments from Maddon and you know why he did what he did. If even one of the BP guys had performed like they normally do, nobody would be questioning Maddon right now. This is beyond ridiculous.
