Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

... Pt. 2

So not only has ESPN montaged the comeback four times, but they also have a sports psychologist analyzing the Rays mental health.

...

I guess those 72% odds of the Rays still winning this series aren't enough to overcome ESPN's fondness of those Red Sox.

It's quite simple

No matter what team you are, all the ESPN analysts will favor Boston because they are in love with them (and for no good reason). Talk about being neutral….Tampa Bay is the better team of the series and they make it act like Tampa Bay is done and the Red Sox are going to the World Series immediately.

What about TBS???

The “Superstation” announcers looove the Rays. I agree ESPN talks highly of the Sox, but come on look at the track record. If you can’t tell I am a Sox fan. I’ll give the Rays their props. Good team. Impressive record.

ESPN sucks

At least we can all agree on that.

this sounds a bit better than the 72%....

… mentioned above but neither is really going out on a limb. Flip a coin twice and you’ll get at least one tail 75% of the time.

I’d like to think we’re a better chance than the law of averages.

by AussieGriff on Oct 18, 2008 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

You just knew that was what we were going to be in for as soon as it became apparent

the Red Sox were gonna come back and win the damn thing.

Still, the Rays win at home…I am confident that Pedroia and Lowry used up all their magic elven pixie dust and even Shrekilis can’t help them now. Lightning does not strike twice.

I’m still pissed at Slam Boys too.

Not this time.

The Rays are not the Yankees/Indians. They’re better.

Beckett's not healthy

I’m expecting a short fight, I would be surprised if he was effective tomorrow.

Look what else does ESPN have to talk about?

The WNBA? MLS? There are no football games just yet? There are no “real” college games going on Saturday. And you can only talk about Pac-man Jones so many times until you feel like ghosts are chasing you. So, there are going to over blow situations. It happens.

ESPN DARLINGS RED SOX

Are big news cause ESPN wants them to win the series. But the RAYS are gonna win today. Its hard to beat the RED SOX 3 games in a row. They got some HOT BATS at the end of the game is all. The RAYS WILL CRUSH `EM in ST.PETE!

They want that Boston market in the World Series, they need that Boston market in the media series. Without it, they will have 2 teams outside the top ten media markets playing for the world series. They’ll get reduced national appeal and almost nothing from the average west coast fan.

by Jason Collette on Oct 18, 2008 9:04 AM EDT reply actions

It is so damn true!

ESPN is trying really hard to push those Red Sox to coming back & winning the series. They are even trying to come up with a jinx for the Rays now. On Mike & Mike, Friday morning, Mike Greenberg was talking about how one of the producers of the show sent out an email to the Tampa Bay front office when the Rays were up 7-0 on Boston in Game 5 to congratulate them on making the World Series. Of course we all know what happened after that. Now it’s as if Greenberg is just trying to conjure up this curse for the Rays, much like the curse of the Cubs. I think they want it to happen for their own amusement. They want the Red Sox to come back & win so they can endorse this curse that they have conjured up & mentioned on their show because of some idiotic actions of one of their producers on the show. It just makes me fucking sick! ESPN is trying really hard to jinx the Rays or get in their heads. They are a bunch of Yankees & Red Sox homers.

I don't even know why you guys are subjecting yourself to this kind of punishment.

Here’s a New York Times article that feels the same way that I do.

Don’t be heartbroken if Josh Beckett actually comes out tonight and pitches an at-least decent game.

I hate Mike Greenberg

Period. He is a jerk, an out an out lowlife piece of crap. He can go stick it where the sun don’t shine. He is a gimmicked up piece of cowdung.

... Pt. 2

Yesterdays news. The team let it go, and so should we. We did what we hoped to do in BOS and we will do the same at home. Let’s move on to the World series.

by CharlieRay on Oct 18, 2008 9:52 AM EDT reply actions

Rays want to win at home

Clearly, the Rays want to secure their advancement to the World Series in front of their adoring fans. I have no problem with that.

Heck, if I weren’t so lazy I might be motivated to drive across SR 60 to scalp a ticket to see it happen in front of my very eyes.

For the Doubting Thomases:

  1. Home field advantage (if it truly exists)
  2. Beckett < 100%
  3. James Shields
  4. Destiny (not her child)

Go Rays!

ESPN is NESN for a national audience.

Nuff said.

Carlos and Victor Zambrano have exactly the same number of career postseason wins. Who would have thought?

True...

except for the lack of Bruins games. :)

by billso on Oct 18, 2008 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we are going to win tonight but...

You need more than a spreadsheet. When Ortiz hit the home run we were up 7-4. That is still a huge lead with 7 outs to go. Our odds of winning were still huge. However, almost everyone that i knew sensed and felt a major collapse. Our odds were a hell of a lot lower than what a spreadsheet would show.

While some formulas are showing us with a 78% chance of moving on anyone should realize that is just not right. If I was a gambling man (which I am just not on the Rays) I would be laying money on the Sox all day and night with those numbers.

These are not two regular season games existing in a vacuum.

If it goes to Game 7 we are in deep deep shit. Frankly we should be a decent dog in that game.

For game 6 we have to hope the players and manager are all psychologically there. If they aren’t we have no chance.

I give our chances of moving on somewhere in the 55 to 60% range.

by matthan on Oct 18, 2008 11:50 AM EDT reply actions

55-60% with James Shields and home field advantage?

I have a few casinos that would love to have you in for business.

by R.J. Anderson on Oct 18, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes. That is just about the odds I have.

I’m not really sure the point about casinos. Like that was an attempt at a comeback but it makes no sense. People bet because they have a different take on a game than a casino. If everyone had the exact same take on a game as the casinos then nobody would bet. I actually caved in and bet on the Rays in game 3 and game 4. I thought the money line was way undervalued so I bet it. Right now if casinos had our shot of moving on equivalent to 78 percent then I’d take the Sox. I’d never bet against the Rays though.

My issue is with Game 7. I think we have a really good shot tonight, but i do not like our shot at all tomorrow. To me tonight is slightly better than a coin flip and tomorrow is noticeably less than a coin flip.

by matthan on Oct 18, 2008 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

So the Sox decided to show up?

I am pumped for today’s game. Look we all knew the Sox would show up at some point, so we just have to look at this like bonus baseball. It could have been a very boring weekend with no baseball, but instead we got another Rays game to watch. But I can’t wait until the game starts today. I hope anybody going to the game makes it loud in there….I don’t care what happens, I don’t want to see that our fans are as embarrasing as Sox fans and are just dead quiet and leave early. I really have no more respect for those fans at those Fenway games…..it’s play-off baseball. Stay for the whole freaking game.

Amen

I loved watching the Pink Sox fans slink through the exit tunnel during the 6th inning on Thursday.

Rays fans will stay for the entire game, and see the Rays win the AL pennant.

After a couple of days to look back on it

Did we really think that the Sux were just gonna lay down and accept the inevitable? C’mon, we expected a fight and we’re gonna have to go through one to make it to the WS.

I thought this would go 6

So the Red Sox are just playing out the script. Doesn’t mean they’re gonna win.

Fair weather fans, BE GONE!

Pull yourself together, man! The Rays have the Red Sux right where they want ’em.

Besides, as another correspondent noted, this is just another opportunity for more October baseball. I’m lovin’ it!
