Anyone who comes to this site has been a baseball fan for quite some time. Remember back to your "sandlot", your baseball field, your park, go back a few years and remember what it was like to play the game. What was it that was so fun? It was pretending you were Babe Ruth calling your shot or imitating the Sammy Sosa home run hop, or Ken Griffey Jr. It was pretending you could pitch like Nolan Ryan or Greg Maddox. And it was pretending the bases were loaded with two outs in the world series, or a game seven scenario.
This Rays team is not that far removed from that very scenario. Now they get to live that scenario. Pressure isn't even the correct word to describe what is going to be going through their heads tonight. The Rays are the ultimate epic cinderella team. A team that is valued dollar-for-dollar less than the left side of the Yankee infield. A team that was valued to the point that Vegas had them as 200:1 odds entering this season.
And now the Rays have suffered through the wrong side of a playoff comeback and have the 'been-there-before' Sox confidence at a season-high. Once again the critics doubt. Once again, the Sox can believe these Rays will crumble under the pressure.
Here's hoping the Rays can take it back to the playground. Appreciate that they are living a dream tonight. Yes, tonight can turn that dream into either reality or a nightmare. But at the end of tonight, there can be kids imaging they were Matt Garza or B.J Upton or Evan Longoria battling the Red Sox. Heck, I'll enjoy heading back to the backyard myself and remember why I enjoy being a baseball fan and a fan of these Tampa Bay Rays.
