Sheesh... you guys are taking years off my life... and I'm a Rockies fan. ;)
Hullo all, First, I would like to extend a very large CONGRATULATIONS!!! to you for beating That Team (you know the one. The one cashing in with a vengeance now that God doesn't hate them any more and seem to think they get to do this every year now. The team who sadly ruined my team's magical Rocktober run last year. The guys with the idiot fans who follow them in packs. Yeah, those guys). Secondly, this is exciting for me as well. I started following the Rays relatively early this year once it became apparent that the Rockies were going to suck again, and while I didn't pay close game-by-game attention to them the way I did (to bad results) with the Rox, I was always pleased to hear that they did well and was so excited when they were consistently in first place, seeing as I hate the Red Sox and Yankees (and imagine that you feel likewise). With the Angels, Sawx and W. Sawx, and you guys represented for the AL playoff teams, it was a no-brainer as to who I'd like to see go for the Junior Circuit. (I was backing the Brewers in the NL, since they helped the Rockies out big at the end of last year, but sadly that ended rather quickly).

Which brings me to Game 7. I had decided I wasn't going to go to sleep and wake up to another bad result, as had happened the first two times. So, even though the game started at 1am, I hung in there on my computer. Fortunately, I had two friends back in the States online with me, who tipped me off to good or bad things before my Gameday caught up with them (my internet is a bit of a pain). But in the pivotal 7th, 8th, and 9th, where things had gone downhill before, I was freaking out. You'd think I was watching the Rockies (I get very worked up about them, mainly because they find new ways to fail with every game). Fortunately, both my friends were rooting for the Rays just as hard as I was, and exchanging ALL CAPS messages with A LOT OF EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!! when good things happened. We cheered for Garza. We cheered when Aybar hit the home run. We found ourselves unable to breathe when Price came in with the bases loaded and, peering through my fingers, I saw him strike out Drew and sagged with relief.
During the 9th inning, I couldn't sit down. It was now pushing 5am, but I still wasn't going anywhere. I had to see how it ended. I was a little nervous when it started with the leadoff walk, but the 96-mph heater and the nasty slider soon put paid to that... that Price kid, he may be good someday, huh? ;) And when Lowrie bounced the final chopper to Iwamura, my friends and I had a cyber-freakout as great as if we'd watched our own teams win it (one was an A's fan, one was a D-backs fan). It was great.
So in conclusion, you've got an awesome young team, you're a lot of fun to watch, thank you SO MUCH for beating the Red Sox, and seriously, between you, the Rockies, and the Broncos' defense, I am officially going to be dead by the age of 30 or something.

Good News/Bad News:
Good: The Yankees and The Red Sox simply aren’t going to have it easy anymore, between the Rays and the Jays, the AL East is going to be damn difficult for several years to come, and the fact that one of them finally LOST completely destroys that aura of invincibility that has surrounded these teams for the past decade.
Bad: The Rays will undoubtedly have an influx of these same dumb fans you speak of for the Sox. There’s no way to avoid it; the story of this season is far too epic to avoid the Rays from getting their fair share of ignorant obnoxious Rays fans. We’re going to be the new hated team, just watch.

Well, I was afraid the same thing was going to happen to the Rockies
and we did do a little better in terms of turnout, but no asshole fans… then again, the fact that we had clearly established our return to ineptitude by that point might have helped.

they best part
of this off-season will be to watch how much money both the Sox and Yanks throw at their teams to try to KEEP UP WITH US!!!!
Even better, is we don’t have to add a god damn mother fucking penny to our payroll to beat them next year!!!

I don't think the Rays will end up being hated
Unless all your players turn into assholes and your fans all become entitled douches.
I’m an Indians fan. While yes, when we play you guys during the regular season, I will want Cleveland to win, I won’t be at the game (or at home) yelling “STRIKE THIS FUCKER OUT” or “Let’s get these assholes”.

Hated Teams
Let me get this right… baseball teams become hated once they win big games on a consistant basis… this does not appear to bode well for future Ray’s teams!
The Rockies fan complains about the Red Sox sweeping his untalented Rockies out of the Series last year… hell the Rays would have beat the shit out of that over-achieving, high altitude bunch! Why is it that supposed true fans of the game spew hate when it comes to well played baseball by teams that do it year in and year out ? Why ?
Will the Rays be the next hated team should they reel off three Series wins in a row… will they deserve the venom thrown their way ?

I agree...
Just be ready to be hated by the rest of the baseball world ! We’re new to this winning thing… the Red Sox and Yankess have been there before. Maybe we’ll become more tolerant if the Rays can sustain their success on the field. Maybe we’ll gain a little more self respect if we can sell out our own stadium now. We’ll see.

I won't be hated because I am humble.
Will some people be left with a sour taste in their mouth due to bad experiences with certain fans? Sure. This does not concern me as I cheer whether we win or lose, a little more when we win, a little less when we lose, but never go out of my way to rub it in someones face.

You got it wrong, at least the way I see it.
Teams mostly become hated because of the fans that represent them and their sense of entitlement. The bandwagon a-hole fans around the country that show up representing the Red Sox(or other current favorite team) are the ones giving the teams they root for a bad name. We want our teams to beat the hell out of the Red Sox so we don’t have to deal with the arrogant, rude behavior that bandwagon fans bring to the Trop or any other place the Red Sox play on the road. Nobody likes a bully who thinks he can come into your house and push you around, and that’s the way the Red Sox and Yankees fans have been over the years. Now that the Yankees have fallen off a bit, their a-hole fans aren’t as mouthy, but a lot of Red Sox fans are more arrogant than ever. That’s why it feels so good to be able to shut them up, at least for now. I went to Fenway last year, and the Fenway crowd I saw had a hell of a lot more class overall than these yahoos that raid the Trop when the Red Sox are in town. As long as the Rays and/or their fans don’t get cocky, they will not be hated.

It’s totally the fans. Camden Yards is something of a vacation destination for baseball fans, and almost every game I go to there are at least a few of the opposing team’s fans nearby. Sometimes they’re totally quiet (except to cheer for their team in an acceptable manner), if they’re close enough we might exchange some friendly smack talk, but mostly they’re baseball fans following their team, and they are fine. Red Sox fans are an entirely different breed. I’ve been told over and over again the Red Sox fans in New England aren’t like the majority of those who show up in Baltimore, so I suppose I believe it, but I’ve never seen it. When I’m rooting for the Red Sox to lose, it’s those fans I’m thinking of. I actually like a lot of the players on the Red Sox, but their fans are SO arrogant and nasty and rude and disrespectful that the thought of having any more wins to fuel their attitudes greatly disturbs me.
The only consistently super successful teams in my lifetime have been the Yankees, Red Sox, and Braves. Did people hate the Braves in the 90s? I didn’t, and I’ve never heard anything about their fans having a lousy reputation. But since they’re in the NL I could certainly be missing some info.

Me… I dig the baseball played on the field, I don’t go… I don’t tune in… to watch the fans… or listen to the fans. The best baseball teams warrant our attention because they have good players and good managers and good front offices. They play the game the way its supposed to be played… they play like the Rays & the Sox did over these past seven games… exciting baseball.
Just think if the rest of the baseball world judged our fans on the obnoxious asshole who simply yells at the top of his lungs at most every TBR home game ??

I agree with that
it’s about the team, not the fans. But as you know, the fans can ruin the game experience for you by making it unbearable to watch the game. That’s the issue.
And I can’t stand that dude who yells. He needs to stick a sock in it and realize his fifteen minutes are up.

Hey
I hated the Red Sox a loooooong time before they happened to hit the Rockies like a train. Long time. Back when they were still plagued by the curse of the Bambino.
And I really like your team, by the way, and don’t think I’d hate them. Only if they start strutting and getting full of themselves. And even then I’d still be pretty okay with them as long as they didn’t do it too much.
And I’m a woman, BTW.

Also, couple other things...
I agree with rayweaver that it’s mainly the fans who get massively arrogant… hell, the Cubs fans make it impossible to go to Cubs/Rox games, even though the Cubs haven’t won jackshit in a century. As long as you guys don’t do that, I’m cool with it.
And also, don’t need to get so aggressive… I was coming over to make love, not war. I LIKE the Rays, and I’ll be just fine with them being successful. That was the whole POINT of this post.

Couple more things
Your post mostly dealt with the fact that you hate the Yankees and the Red Sox… not that you loved the Rays. You especially dislike the Red Sox. To me, it seemed like you were jealous of their success, not just the failure of the Rockies to a win game in last year’s Series. The Rays ought to be able to string quite a few post-season berths in a row… will their anticipated success cause you to hate them too ??

I still don't quite think you're getting it...
I was really excited to see the Rays win Game 7 because I LIKE them. Yes, I hate the Red Sox. But I believe I stated in the first or second paragraph that I started following the Rays because they were a break from the usual AL East Yanks/Sawx hegemony. I liked them on their own merits, particularly because they were something new and they reminded me a little of the Rox. And no, I don’t hate teams because they’re successful. As I mentioned, I hated the Sox before they were successful, but now that they are, their fanbase is progressively more intolerable.
If the Rays keep going to the playoffs, I’ll be just fine with that. It’s only if they start getting arrogant and have a bunch of traveling, annoying fans who go everywhere and don’t shut up that it’ll be a problem. And since I don’t see that happening, it’s cool.

I got it
In the second paragraph you mention the Rays twice and the Red Sox four times… you tell me what your motivation was ?
You wanted the Sox to lose to the Rays because they wooped your team in last year’s World Series, that I understand. But, I think we all know that you would hate the Rays if it had been them besting your Rockies last year, instead of the Red Sox.
It’s O.K. to say it…

I would have been upset, yes
But my hatred for the Red Sox is long-established. I would have been peeved if the Rockies had lost to the Rays instead, obviously, but I wouldn’t HATE them. I only truly hate three teams, and that’s been constant for a long time.
So…. chill out, man! It’s a lovely day… your team is going to the World Series… the birds are singing…. ya know. The works.

Got it wrong
So… it’s not the talented team that creates the hate, it’s the traveling fan of the talented team? If the Red Sox & Yankee fans stayed out of the Trop – these clubs would revert back to being simply – very good baseball teams. And… if Rays fans keep to their home games only – they will not become hated by the masses. Yes ?
I say it feels good to be Rays today fan because our team sucked for years & years. It feels good because we could finally compete with the best of the league. The Yankees and the Red Sox will now respect the TB Rays and that should not be lost on our fan base. Gloating after years of failure should not be practiced by real TBR fans.

The point you are missing is that you can be successful and humble at the same time
they are not mutually exclusive. Most people that jump on something without ever having to ride out the depressing times are not humble because whenever they experience the downtimes they move on to something else. It is a fact of sports that some people are so concerned with self-preservation (ego in this case) that they will jump from team-to-team gloating about the highs and never feeling the depressive effects. That is fine, but most people can spot these guys and gals from a mile away and treat them appropriately. This goes for your own fans and those of the opposition.

The point is.
All teams have fans that you wouldn’t want to call your friends. All teams, in all sports have dick-head fans. The hate for certain clubs seems to become elevated as they enjoy success on the playing field. Fake fans come & go, they are not the true representatives of a ball club. I have been lucky enough to get up north and find a seat at Fenway. It is simply the best baseball park I have ever been to. There are no extraneous horns, buzzers, or bells up there, just a full-house of screaming, knowledgeable baseball game lovers. The guy sitting next to me had had his season tickets since before Carlton Fisk hit one out in 1975 Series !! These people are not johhny-come-latelys.
The point is, we are now the best team in the American League, bashing other good baseball teams should be beneath us.

To each his own...
Fenway is a classic park with history and tradition, and most of all very old. That’s why people like it. That’s why I wanted to go there. I think Turner Field is great. Coors Field is great. Safeco, Camden Yards, and Minute Maid Park are also great places I have been to. They are all better facilities than Fenway. As I said earlier, I went to Fenway last year and came away with the opinion that Fenway fans are way classier than the a-hole bandwagon fans scattered around the country. I openly told the guy that sat next to me that I was from Tampa Bay and that I was a (Devil) Rays fan. He complimented the team, and we talked baseball for most of the game. The bandwagon is not a true representation of a core fanbase, but it includes the fans that are the most rude and obnoxious fans that give any fanbase a bad name. The bigger the fanbase, the bigger and more visible the bandwagon is. The Red Sox and Yankees are global. The true baseball fans respect all other teams and fans because they know that we are all alike (New York is probably another story though, be it Yankee Stadium or Shea, though I can’t speak on that from experience. New Yorkers are a different breed.). We root for our respective teams, and we want our teams to be successful. We know how hard it is to make it through the season and be on top at the end.

Hell.... I'm a Rockies fan.
It’s generally torture punctuated by random moments of brilliance, like most of September and October last year. It felt good to be a Rockies fan then. Hopefully it will sometime again, but one playoff series still proves that we got a long way to go, and I think most long-time fans of teams get that. It’s the poseurs who jump in and make things irritating for the rest of them.

I don't *think* so
but if he was, it wouldn’t surprise me, since O’Dowd does love him some waiver-wire retreads. Actual good young pitching tends to be beyond his radar screen, or once it gets there, it then sinks to the clutches of Bob Apodaca.

If you continue to win, and become "the" dominant team
in these next few years, you will become hated like every team becomes hated, and your fanbase will both increase greatly in size and ego.
But who f’n cares about that shit. Jealousy and bitterness. It is every fan’s dream that their favorite team morph into a legendary powerhouse for the ages, no one should apologize for success, not even Yankee and Red Sox fans.
There may even come a day when I turn against the Rays, rooting for the other team as I root for all perceived underdogs…but to you, the true fan, that just means that I am to be pitied, for that’s all I’ve got, while the scorn of outsiders does nothing to take away from your glory.

Hey, Silverblood
Nice to see you made the transition to England & are still posting baseball comments.
For the unknowledgeable, Silverblood is a legend at Purple Row and the author of over 10,000 posts on that blog, many of them among the most humorous you’ll ever read. Drays Bay should be honoured (English spelling) by her presence.
I join her in wishing the Rays good luck. I started tracking the Rays on this blog in the 2007 season after their acquisitions of multiple players from my lifetime favorite team, the Astros. For similar reasons, I started tracking ex-Astros with the Rockies on Purple Row after they, like the Rays, hosed the Astros in a big trade.
So Astros, Rockies and Rays are my 3 teams. The Rays success surprised a lot of people, but I knew from last year they had the talent. Shoot, they’ve got nine (9!) legit. major league starters — either established starters or prospects who are ready to give it a go in the Bigs — next seaon. Other teams, Rox & Stros included, would kill to be in that position.
So, have fun this year & win it all. Next year will be even better.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.

Twins fan living in Florida, and my roommate is a fan of (and this is how he refers to them, without fail, every time) “Those First Place Tampa Bay Rays.” (he’s a little happy about it)
Anyway, I’m really happy for Garza and Bartlett both to get a chance to play for a ring, and as much as I wish they were Twinkies still, I’m still gonna root for them. Plus, anyone wanna remind me why the hell we wanted Delmon Young from you guys?
