Upton, Pena, Longoria = 0-12, 0 TOB
There's your reason for losing game one. At least one (or two, or all) have to get on or circle base(s) in order for the offense to go. Sometimes you're going to get games like last night, and especially considering how well each has hit over the first two series. If there's good news to come it's that Brett Myers is on the mound, and he has a tendency for watching his pitches fly over the wall at home or on the road.
I fully expect at least one homerun from the trio tonight.

That's it in a nutshell
Besides Aki, the rest of the line up nets 2 hits

Crirical game tonight, as was Game 2 v BOS
Losing means we need to win 4/5, three games on the road
Let’s win tonight

I say we have an offensive explosion tonight
BJ and Longo are 1 from tying the HR team mate record. They will each get one tonight and break it. Which would also tie BJ for the record for HR’s by 1 player.
Matt Garza is in the middle of having his 3rd testicle descend. He will be ready in time to win tonight though.

Yet
Had Upton’s hard hit grounder in the third gone a few feet either way or had they called a balk on Hamels in the sixth, it’s probably a very different outcome. Baseball is frustrating like that.

RH batters have a better split against myers, and rocco hasn’t started two games in a row in a while, so that’s why he didnt go last night—resting up for tonight
final score: Rays 7, Phillies 2

we’ve got the best bullpen… we need to tie the series tonight

On a side note,
I’d like to hope that the lack hustle down to first base that I saw from a few of the players won’t happen again. Maddon doesn’t seem to care, so maybe there’s something we don’t know about.

That's kind of what I was thinking.
Has there been anything said about the health of BJ’s legs lately? I don’t recall. Aybar is another one who didn’t seem to run too hard last night on a groundball. Does he have leg issues?
by rayweaver on Oct 23, 2008 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There was also that blooper into center that he seemed to quit/pull up on. Zobrist was right behind him, maybe he wasn't aware of that.
by PlayOnWords on Oct 23, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He wanted to dive, but seemingly pulled up.
Either he misjudged it or didn’t want to deflect the ball away from Zobrist.
by R.J. Anderson on Oct 23, 2008 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In that play, I just thought he didn't want to risk the diving catch
He may not have know Zobrist was there to back him up.

I take offense to that comparison
I hate that guy. Seriously, though, they weren’t running hard to first. There’s no denying it.

A caller on XM just defended BJ using
his leg injuries and shoulder injuries as reasons for not busting down to first and not diving in the outfield.

Not totally related but...
I found it interesting to see the Phillies coaches using a stop watch timing our pitcher’s deliveries and their guy’s hustle to first.

It looks to me like Upton is trying to do too much and hit a homer every time up now.
Hopefully Maddon gives him the talk he gave Longo about sticking to the strike zone and it being ok for him to take walks. I think he’s swung at the first pitch every AB the last 2 games, which is highly unusual for him.
by rays1234 on Oct 23, 2008 3:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If he was trying to hit a homer everytime he wouldn't have smoked one down the line.
That ball that he got doubled up on was right on the screws. If he was swinging for the fences he pops that ball up or swings and misses.

Oh. Exactly.
That is a GIDP and Werth gets a 2B on a bloop to RF. Oh well.
by rglass44 on Oct 23, 2008 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think BJ was going for a homer every time
but he definitely wasn’t as patient as he usually is. He was swinging at a lot of shaky pitches that you usually don’t see from him. That means either:
1) BJ was trying to hard
2) BJ had first game jitters
3) Hamels is an ultimate beast
BTW, BJ’s shot for the 2nd double play was a well hit ball. That was very similar to the shot Zobrist had, but Feliz came up with the play. You can’t complain about that one.
by KazforPresident on Oct 23, 2008 3:38 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It's certainly not like BJ was the only one he made look silly last night.
by PlayOnWords on Oct 23, 2008 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Very true
When only Zobrist and CC were able to get hits besides Aki no one was really having a good night.
I was just saying that BJ didn’t look like the usual BJ by his pitch selection.
by KazforPresident on Oct 23, 2008 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not too many of them did.
There were a lot of swings at changeups in the ground. Not to mention we hit an (seemingly) unusual amount of foul popups that were converted to outs.

Good pitching wins games.
Or at least that’s what they say. Cole was just a little bit better last night and that is all. The Rays seem a little bit like the Angels where once a player or two starts hitting, then everybody on the team starts hitting. I think that will happen tonight in Game 2. Good luck to the Rays!

you're lucky
it’s a shame the AL still employs the DH… Brett ‘the bat’ Myers (aka Brett ‘the wifebeater’ Myers) would destroy tampa pitching (this is clearly sarcasm)…
by PHIGHTINPHILS on Oct 23, 2008 4:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
what if...
i’ll be the first to admit that brett is always a question mark… however… the 2nd half of the year after he came back from the minors he has been on fire. whats the likelihood that the phils come back to philly up 2 games?
also – the phils are a strong lefty dominated lineup that eats up fastball pitchers, are you nervous at all about shields tonight? a guy that relies on his fastball/changeup and has very little breaking stuff?
i swear i’m not trying to stir up drama, i’m just a phils phan who is curious about the mood in st petes… i am definitely trollin right now tho.. hahah

Meyers doesn't scare me at all.
And I’m not concerned about Shields facing the line-up. He’s better than Kaz and you were lucky to score at all. Kaz struck out Utley in the first 2 pitches before he hit the home run. That should never have happened.

And the other run was a result of a couple bloop hits.

Robots, who will be the first MLB player to beat the Robot Umpire with his bat after being called out looking on strikes?

true...
it’s 100% true that umps have the ability to ruin a game, and if i wasn’t pro-phils, i’d have said that hamels move was a balk too, but… that’s just part of the game, do you really want to have a red flag in baseball too? the game already takes forever and i for one, dont want replays every 5 minutes…
as in all series, playoff or not, calls are going to go your way sooner or later… the rays will get some favorable calls that philsphans will undoubtedly bitch about, one of burrell’s strikeouts was probably not really a strike… but we won so none of the phils phans care… dont worry rays faithful, you will more than likely get a few calls your way tonight to make up for it…
by PHIGHTINPHILS on Oct 23, 2008 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope. I want a college football style replay system. Every play is reviewed in the booth.
If it’s questionable, you radio down, stop play, look at it closely and change it if necessary. It won’t take any longer than it does for Managers to go out, argue, yell, scream and walk slowly back to the dugout.
And with balls and strikes, there could be a radio system that radios down to an umpire if the pitch is a ball or strike. The umpire makes the call. You can’t argue it because it’s right with a margin of error less than 2 inches. Better than any human alive. Case in point last night. Two blown calls, both cost the Rays hugely.

karl marx?
although your plan is a good one… it only works in theory, like marx’s communism… plus buddy boy selig would never okay that… he’s too much of a ‘purist’
other than the blown calls i would worry more about bj upton not running out two groundouts that he might have beaten had he hustled… the game turns out completely different if he beats out either or both of those double plays… youth factor or laziness?
by PHIGHTINPHILS on Oct 23, 2008 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only part that should even be theory is the balls and strikes part.
Reply is in every other major sport and works. Baseball is always 10 years behind the curve in using technology to improve the game.
And BJ wouldn’t have beaten out either of those ground balls. The second double play he absolutely killed the ball. He was 3 steps out of the box when Utley received the throw. No chance to get even close.

BJ and EVAN
Hopefully they did not close down Hyde Park Cafe as they did on Tuesday night, You would think before game 1 of the World Series they could take it easy and not be out until 3 AM. Could have had something to do with their lack of hitting.

Oh no. I hope drinking 17 hours before the game didn't affect them too much.
Seriously, it’s not a 9-5 job. They can be out till 3, sleep till 1 or 2 and still be to work on time. This doesn’t matter at all. Heck, David Wells threw a perfect game, not hung over, he was still drunk.
