O/U: 1.5 innings for a Phillies fan to get thrown out?

There were a few in 318 that got tossed barely into the first. That’s $100/inning, gents. Thanks for the contribution.

by PlayOnWords on Oct 23, 2008 4:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There were a few good Phils fans around us.

They have nothing on Boston, or even the White Sox fans. I just thought it was hilarious these guys couldn’t even get through the first inning without being escorted out.

by PlayOnWords on Oct 23, 2008 4:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was in 316 I saw the guy get tossed

They let him back in, but I think he got tossed again. I had a family of Phillies fans that made the trip down from Philly in front of me. Good people, good baseball fans. I had a great time jawin’ with ’em.

Creepy

I guarantee I sit a row or two behind you. You’re talking about the 2 younger guys who wouldn’t stop chanting “Let’s Go Phillies” and making the cowbell-shaking gesture? Were you wearing a Durham Bulls shirt?

If the Rays live by the HR and die by the HR, they need to start producing or look bad for the home town folks.

My favorite group is doing the National Anthem tonight so I'm considering that a good omen

I just want some extra base hits tonight. Hamels was scary good last night. I mean, for Halloween, Chuck Norris went as Cole Hamels.

Apparently I really did go too far with the VJ joke.
Hey RJ, loved the article you did for MetsGeek, giving us some interesting info on the 5 Rays you chose.

Thanks so much for that, we loved it. But i have a follow-up question if you don’t mind. I tracked your email down via your blog (which is fabulous btw)

The thing with David Price being legally named at birth “Velociraptor Jesus”….I mean come on, is that real???? That’s started quite the commotion where i work now and i was wondering, if it is truly accurate, is there anything you can point me towards to prove it and shut these non-believers i work with up.

Thanks man.

Go Rays!!!! Beat those phils!

by R.J. Anderson on Oct 23, 2008 6:30 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I almost believed it too...

But I couldn’t find any confirming sources anywhere on the net, and if Wikipedia and Google don’t say it’s true then it can’t possibly be true. =)

It’s at least plausible becuase hey, there’s lots of people with really strange names (like Coco Crisp).

How did this joke start anyway? I like it, but I really don’t get it.

Do or Die

What’s on the line in tonight’s game you ask?

Well, I’ve ran the numbers for you. With last night’s win, the Phillies currently sport a 53.22% chance of winning the W.S. Another win from the Phillies tonight, would catapult those percentages up to 74.85. A defecit that would be difficult to overcome. On the otherhand, if the Rays win tonight, their chances of winning the W.S., jump back up to 59.97. If the Rays are fortunate enough to win both games 2 and 3, then the percentages jump up to 77.22%.

vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Oct 23, 2008 7:09 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think you're giving the Rays too much credit. The Phils have at least a 60% chance of winning the series at this point.

Anyway, I ran the numbers too and I come up with the Rays’ chance of winning tonight at 53.97%. I’m curious to see how you had the Rays as favorites in game 1.

by lailaihei on Oct 23, 2008 7:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think you're both out of alignment

I’ve ran the numbers and this whole thing about trying to project who’s going to win tonight using senario statistics holds about as much weight as ERA for pitching analysis.

Please please, make this shit stop. Someone.

by kericr on Oct 23, 2008 7:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just ran the numbers

turns out if we win 4 of the next 6, our odds are 100%

just for fun

it’s just for fun… and if you can beat or even break even with Vegas, predicting game outcomes is not worthless. :)
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Oct 23, 2008 7:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, it's fun indeed.

I’ve been somewhat successful so far, but I know it’s mostly small sample size giving me such great results. Check here for my regular season record this year.

Methodology

What’s your methodology for predicting runs per game for each team?
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Oct 23, 2008 7:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I have an excel spreadsheet that I plug numbers into...

Specifically, team baseruns, tRA, +/- team defense, bullpen tRA, starting pitchers average innings, and park factors. Then I use BP’s exponential pythag formula to come up with a win% from those average runs scored numbers.

by lailaihei on Oct 23, 2008 8:02 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What about

such things as, Home Field Advantage, lineup(s), right lefty splits, base running, relievers that aren’t available. How well does it measure vs actual results?
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Oct 23, 2008 8:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nope, I haven't taken those into account at all.

The only one I can see doing easily of those is baserunning. Unless there’s some sort of HFA factor I can use for each team, I don’t see throwing out some sort of ‘league-average’ HFA number in there. It takes about an hour to run a 15-game day as it is, and I can’t add in the other things easily without access to databases.

My record is pretty good though.

by lailaihei on Oct 23, 2008 8:13 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Game #1

Vegas was 50/50 in game 1, and I gave the Rays a 1.45% edge, which isn’t much different. If you average out Vegas game lines for games 2 thru 7 which is .54 for the Rays, you get the Phillies with a series win probability of slightly over 57. As for tonight’s game, AccuScore gives the Rays a 66 chance of winning and Vegas is sitting at just over 62%, very much inline with my numbers.
vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Oct 23, 2008 7:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Outlier

if you look here, you will see that BP’s predictions are the outlier, which means they have some serious flaws. BP is the only source (of many) that had the Phils as favorites headed into this series. There are so many incorrect conclusions you have to come to, to come up with such a prediction. Read the link to find out why.

You guys should wear down Myers

much better than we (Brewers) could.
Our offense was anaemic by the time we got to the postseason… We could loan you Corey Hart if you want someone to inflate Myers’ confidence though. In short I think his postseason success to this point has been the result of facing some teams in offensive slumps. I can see another 8/9 runs for you guys today.
