Anyone who apologizes for his horrible play this series should die

Series ain't over, fortunately for him.

And Pena
I expect both to break out against Joe the Plumber in game 4!

Blanton is not a plumber.
He creates leaks and runs, not stops them.
Carlos and Victor Zambrano have exactly the same number of career postseason wins. Who would have thought?

What should he have done
The runner was in the way. There wasn’t enough time to sidestep, and you can’t get him out by nailing him in the back.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

Brick....
It is obvious to anyone that has ever played the game, or understands it, that Longoria didnt have a play at the plate. I’m not even sure a perfect throw would have gotten the out, cause there wasnt an angle for the throw. Some fans are just fickle and lack a basic understanding of how the game is played.

we are tying it up tomorrow, btw
That would make it a 3 game series with 2 being in Tampa, thats how far this series is from being over.
Matt Garza is in the middle of having his 3rd testicle descend. He will be ready in time to win tonight though.

I know hindsight is 20/20
but was it really necessary to take out Howell?

The Phillies got the leadoff man on base in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th innings.
You just can’t do that and expect to win the game.

Don't blame Longoria
That ninth inning obviously sucked. I don’t blame Longoria but I wish he would have let that ball go – I think it would have rolled foul.
by slcgiant on Oct 26, 2008 2:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think many will blame him for that...
… but it’s his performance at the plate that’s in question.
But I do agree with R.J. here, you just can’t bench the kid. He hasn’t had a bad patch that’s he’s not rebounded from, and I’m hoping to hell it happens in Game 4.
Anyway I took my deep breath and realized that we’re still in the World Series and still have the better matchup in three of the possibly four games remaining… and that’s how many we need to win.
by AussieGriff on Oct 26, 2008 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, yeah
The only ball that left the infield in the 9th was thrown by Navarro and it sucks
now why don’t we suck it up, act like we still believe in a team that has accomplished so much and put this in the past like the players do.
They actually play the games, make the mistakes and have to live with it and guess what? They get over it, so we can we.
Matt Garza is in the middle of having his 3rd testicle descend. He will be ready in time to win tonight though.

only 2-1 in the important score

Wanted for 2009
A closer, and it ain’t Balfour
by sternfan1 on Oct 26, 2008 9:03 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Who put the lead-off hitter on base? And who sent the ball into the outfield? And who sent the throw to the plate over the catcher’s head?
And honestly, I’m done blaming anyone for what happened, because stuff just happens sometimes… But it’s certainly not the time to single anyone out, especially the guy who was THE turnaround in the ’pen this year.

A closer doesn't come in a game and fire one to the backstop with the winning run on base
No thank you to Balfour as a closer
This is the area, that left untouched will regress for ’09—bullpen

Just ingnore him
He’s Randy Quaid from Major League. Only w/o actually liking the team. If you ask him we would have collapsed in July because none of our players (or coaches) are any good.
Too bad SBN doesn’t offer an “ignore button,” so we don’t have to listen to this clown.

Wait a minute
what did i say that’s so wrong?
Balfour is not a closer?
Maddon had ywo oppurtunities (ALCS Game 7 and WS Game 2) to ise him as one and chose not to
by sternfan1 on Oct 26, 2008 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maddon scoffs at your notion of a closer
Our “closer” that had a great season as a “closer” is in Cali because he stinks. Balfour would be fine in that role.
by rglass44 on Oct 26, 2008 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Having a set closer makes everything worse.
K-Rod loaded the bases in the playoffs and blew a game. Remember?
Carlos and Victor Zambrano have exactly the same number of career postseason wins. Who would have thought?

Let me introduce you to Edwin Jackson
by KazforPresident on Oct 26, 2008 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's going to be solid as a closer
If he can throw his fastball for a strike nailing 99 and then mix in his slider no one will hit him.
by KazforPresident on Oct 26, 2008 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
they don't have to be able to hit him with all those free passes.

Career BB/9 Numbers
Balfour: 4.89
Jackson: 4.52

I still dont understand
why one guy needs to be designated closer

Edwin K'd 6 per nine and sucks.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
by P Brady on Oct 26, 2008 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My problem with that argument is it's from Edwin being a starter
When Edwin came into relief against the BOSOX in the playoffs he came out throwing 99 and was a little wild, but unhittable.
First, Edwin could not throw 99 as a starter because he would throw out his arm. Second, Edwin has been getting better every season and I think if he was to work on becoming a closer in the offseason you could see him as a solid closer.

sucks
I remember in HS there was always one team you feared, not because they were better but because you worried they would turn your bus over. I was just thinking “That was Philly” We will take the series but have to worry about the low class thugs.
by CharlieRay on Oct 26, 2008 10:45 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
A few thoughts from the game
Why didn’t Joe PH for Gross? In the 7th, there were men on 2nd and 3rd with Moyer on the ropes and no outs. He leaves him in, and he grounds out. We still scored 2, but what might have happened had he PH for him. In the 9th, he let him hit again. Both of these situations were late-game and against lefties. Gross has struggled against lefties over his career and is in a terrible slump.
JP Howell was probably left in to start the 9th to keep Matt Stairs on the bench. Bruntlett vs the lefty is a lot better situation than Stairs verse the righty.
Manuel is retarded. Leaving Utley-Howard 3-4 is retarded. Howard won’t have a hit in a big spot in this series because of it.
by rglass44 on Oct 26, 2008 10:48 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Maddon fucked up
No way around it. His loyalty to Gross is costing the team. There is absolutely no reason why he should have been hitting in those spots.

My notion of a closer
I know Price is not proven or seasoned but I would like to see him as closer for the rest of the games. I think he has it. Now I did not say next year when he will be a starter.
by CharlieRay on Oct 26, 2008 10:53 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I have no problem with his BP usage last night.
I think we would have eventually seen Price, but with the game poised for extras no need to take Howell out there.
by rglass44 on Oct 26, 2008 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We got outplayed. There's no one person to blame for it.
I have a feeling Sonny will step up big time. I’d like to see Nando get a start, or at the very least, some playing time. The Phillies have shown they can cool off our bats, they’ve also shown they can’t handle our speed, put Nando in and give them more speed to worry about. Let’s force the issue like BJ did last night.
This shit ain’t over!
by floridaroar on Oct 26, 2008 10:54 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why the hell are we talking about benching Longoria when there is an OBVIOUS guy that NEEDS to be benched in Gabe Gross
Why the hell is that guy playing vs a lefty? Why oh why? We already lost the DH so starting Gross gave us another automatic out.
Gabe Gross should NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER hit against a lefty.

well in our favor
If Sonny beats Blanton like he should, this is a 3 game series with 2 in Tampa
Shields and Garza in Tampa
I have decided not to join the suicide party!
Matt Garza is in the middle of having his 3rd testicle descend. He will be ready in time to win tonight though.

This is why I agree with stern's comment above
This is a must-win. Is it the end of the season if we lose? No. but it makes it significantly harder.
How do you not get more than one off of Jamie Moyer? That hurts.

hes a good choice
but I think if I had to choose a game 7 pitcher, I would still go to Garza
didn’t do that great last night(or as bad as his line says) but he can simply shut a offense down on any given day.
