X = 0 When X = Pena's H + Longoria's H

Disappointing performance all around. Bad defense, awful offense, questionable pitching.  We got our asses beat. For the first time this season a Rays victory simply means living one more day, and not advancing, in an elimination game.

Game #5

Move this series back to Tampa Bay for games six and seven and the Rays have a chance. Yeah right you say, and I agree… with Hamels pitching tomorrow the Rays season is likely over. But the Rays have been playing with fire this whole season, first with the AL East crown, then with the BoSox and now they need to some how clean themselves of the gasoline they accidentally poured all over their bats.

My Simulator has put the Phillies win probability at 61.55% for Game #5. I somehow hope the Rays can pull this out, though I don’t see it happening. I still have my $3K to win on my W.S. futures bet, but that is looking like a lost cause now.

Chances of winning W.S.

… and having simulated Games 5,6 and 7, I computed the Rays chances of winning the W.S. as…

.38 x .63 x .58 = 13.9%

Still an outside shot. Just over 1 out of 7.

nothing against you, you are just trying to figure out our chances

But I will say it again, I think these fan graphs or whatever they are, are useless.

95% chance I masturbate tonight but that doesn’t mean I will.

The funny thing

Below the BPRO article states 6 of 42 teams have come back after being down 3-1. That’s 1 in 7.

Win game 5 and the Rays might win the Series

It will take some crafty managing to win Game 5 today, especially if Hamels has another dominating performance.

But the Rays have a good shot at winning the series if it moves back to the Trop.

I'm disappointed too

Aki was bad, Sonny was average, Edwin was awful, along with Pena and Longo.
But you know what, this shit isn’t over.

THIS IS NOT OVER. LET’S GET IT DONE.

FIDDLE CAT

How can you not still believe in this team after everything they’ve done this year? Keep the faith, man….

Elimination game with an off day

Since this is an elimination game, I would assume that Maddon would have no problem emptying out the bullpen except for maybe Shields the game six starter. Might be nice to see Price pitch some high leverage innings and for Maddon not to have such a long leash like he did with Sonnanstine tonight.

Kaz for 6, Price for 3

All shut out innings. They are lefties who do better against the Phillies…..usually.

Kazmir has looked so much better and Price is…..Price

Steal this one vs Hamels and we get Shields and Garza at home vs Myers and Moyer

come on, this season has to end with a trophy

Garza already has a trophy

it was a weird looking flat one but still a trophy, no?

This is the first time I am saying this.

I am giving up. The officiating in this series has been horrendus. I don’t even wanna watch game 5 it will go one of two ways. Either more of the same with the strike zone inconsistencies between pitchers for each team or… they will feel the need to over compensate by giving Kaz calls they are not giving Hammels either way its going to suck.

I really hate when Umpires are the lead story line of the World Series. Give them the trophy already. I can’t wait for spring training. Let the offseason moves commence.

I am sticking around lol...

When I say I am giving up… I mean giving up hope of winning the series.. My post was not meant to demean the accomplishments of the Rays this year. They have been a very fun and enjoyable team to watch. I am still rather giddy that BJ finally shut his harshest of critics up. BJ is a top 3 CF in the game. For some people in this market to call for him to be traded is just ignorance. I am very excited for the future of the organization as a whole. I love how everyone is predicting that this team will move. The only move I think could happen is a move from Pinellas to Hillsborough County. They are not going anywhere this area is a baseball area.

I will be sticking around the boards anxiously awaiting the offseason developments. I have learned way to much about the team and sabremetrics from this place. I think this is the most intelligent group of individuals I have ever been around when it comes to baseball. Maturity level is another question though j/k.

If you've given up hope of winning the Series I think I speak for most every one here where I say...

It’s not over until one team gets 4 wins. Until then anyone who gives up hope should be taken out back and beaten with a stick.

What kind of fan gives up on their team in the World Series? Not a real fan, I say. You should probably do as walkoffwalk suggested and leave.

It's not over yet

From B-Pro’s Post-game tidbits

–The Phillies are the 43rd team in World Series history to take a 3-1 lead. Of the previous 42, 36 have gone on to win the series, including 23 closing it out in five games. The six teams to rally from a 3-1 deficit were the 1903 Pilgrims over the Pirates, the 1925 Pirates over the Senators, the 1958 Yankees over the Braves, the 1968 Tigers over the Cardinals, the 1979 Pirates over the Orioles and the 1985 Royals over the Cardinals.

31: Times this year the Rays have won three games in a row.

11: Times this year the Phils have dropped 3 in a row.

Win 1, get it back to St. Pete. Anything can happen.

by rglass44 on Oct 27, 2008 11:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

In the 104 year history of the World Series

teams have come back from down 3-1 6 times, but the 1903 one is deceiving (they played a 9-game series then, so the Pilgrims weren’t facing elimination. They did, however, win 4 in a row to take the series.) But basically, 5 times a team has faced elimination needing to win 3 in a row and they’ve pulled it off. That pretty much averages out to once every 20 years. It’s been 23 years since the Royals did it. I think we’re due for another one. And if any city has enough negative karma to blow this lead, it’s Philadelphia. So, Go Rays!

by cjmulrain on Oct 27, 2008 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

fitting the 85 Royals are mentioned...

since the only reason they had the shot was because the umpire blew the call at 1B to extend Game 6.

That's what I was thinking

They thought they would show up in the WS and the Phils would just give up.

but with all the magic of the season, coming back from 3-1 almost seems likely

Trying so hard to cheer myself up
