Well, I'm looking at 1k plus (I bought the extras in the upper deck too)

But I do think it would be good for those of us who have been regulars on this site to get together sometime soon.

As much as this hurts, we have more than enough reason to celebrate. The future is bright, and those of us who believed should celebrate the great things to come.

Congrats Phillies

You and the Umpires should be proud

Bottom line – they made plays when they had to – the .211 batting catcher killed us.

Agreed

I wanted to give a classy tone here, but there are some underlying themes here that dampened my enthusiasm. I wish the fans up there were classy. I am sure there are SOME decent fans in NJ and PA that are upstanding, but hey, they are what they are, they suffer from Napoleonic complex.

The umpiring needs to be addressed. I won’t harp the calls. But it was brutal, larcenous.

Hmmm

What the Rays did….what little they had…..with the accomplishments they have had over the season…….nothing to be ashamed of. Atleast you can go out with friends at night (for those who have yankee fan friends)…you can always say you have an AL East Championship and an American League Champsionship

by Matt C on Oct 29, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So is this the "look at the bright side, fellas" thread?

Well, there’s just one free agent (Bartlett), and most of the big guys in the postseason like Kazmir (thru 2012 with a club option), Shields (thru 2011 with a bunch of club options) Price (2012), Longo (2013, with club options till 2016), and most everyone else still has options left and isn’t a free agent.

Shit, in that division where a bunch of the contracts could start biting NYY and BOS in the ass, that could be a dynasty in the making.

I really think Rocco is back with the Rays next year.

His option was declined b/c 6MM is steep for a part-time player, but I don’t see him with another club.

Thanks RJ

I moved back to Sarasota in ‘06 and the Rays helped build a bond between father and son. I enjoyed 25 home games, a game in Anaheim, and two games in the Bronx this year. My job in Venice is only about 25 minutes from the Rays new Spring Training home. I can’t wait for pitchers and catchers to report. RJ, I have not commented much on this blog much but have been reading religiously for the last two years. You do an amazing job keeping fans informed on all the inner-workings of the Rays. This has been an amazing year!

RJ, do we make an offseason move with all of our starting pitching? Everyday right fielder?

Thanks RJ!

…make following your favorite baseball team more fun thatn it ever has been. The end of the year doesn’t mean I’ll stop checking, of course, but it’s still a good time to say thanks to R.J. and everyone else who provides so much great information in here.

I’m proud of this team. They did not deserve to win this series and failed in too many crucial spots, and it will take a little while to move past this one series and on to the scope of the entire year. But within a week or so, it’ll become clearer and clearer how improbable all of this has been. No matter what they do in the future, it won’t be all that improbable anymore. Try "Intro to Computers".

“Uh, Professor, where is the any key?” That was mandatory for graduating even if you have previously taken online courses.

Seriously. If the college education systems were streamlined

to cut the “waste” more people would graduate, in less debt, and it would generally be a more fulfilling process.

If you can demonstrate adequate proficiency in skills, there is little need to have to forcefully reinforce them.

Kazmir – Garza – Shields – Price – Sonnanstine(until Davis is ready)

K-Rod got 10MM this year.

He will get more than that per year in FA. With teams like the Mets in the market for a closer, 3/21 will EASILY be outbid.

BJ UPTON SUCKS AND COST US THE WORLD SERIES

If BJ Upton is so good, why couldn’t he come out of the bullpen and make some pitches? Huh?
It was a great summer…no, an amazing summer. For the Rays to make it to the World Series this year just blew my mind. I am always excited for the new season….but I don’t think I have ever been this excited, and I am only about 3 hours into the off-season. And actually, it would have been a let-down in a way to win it all like that in one season (a bit of a stretch, but looking for all the bright spots I can). The goal this year was to make it to the play-offs, and we all saw how well they did with that. I am sure for all of them, next year’s goal is to win a World Series….but one game at a time baby, one game at a time.

Thank you Jason Bartlett for exercising the demons that were Brendan Harris and Julio Lugo at shortstop.

Thank you Dan Wheeler for filling many roles this year
Thank you Trever Miller for the specialization
Thank you David Price for being a badass when it was needed the most

Most of all, I thank the entire organization as a whole for ending the era where the Rays were the butt of all baseball jokes. Not that I was ever ashamed of being a fan of this team, but it brings a smile to my face when I get a thumbs up instead of a chuckle when people see me with my hat on. Hopefully, people will remember the excitement of this past season and the last 7 weeks in particular and carry it over into next season. This organization has done everything expected of them, and more, ahead of schedule. It is now time for the fanbase to show up as much as possible because none of this is sustainable without the support of the fans.

Its funny that fans accuse players of playing with no heart.

I have never heard an athlete say nothing but good things about the fans. Maybe you didn’t follow the team with all your heart.

Let it go. You are right … this might have been our only chance. But … I doubt it. There is so much optimisim surrounding this team right now that I think your pessimistic view is in the minority of the fan base. Much like the BJ Upton situation in the middle of the year. The people that were booing him in July and August were the same people singing his praises in October. Never once did BJ lash out at the Fans, Media, or the Manager or his Teammates. He took all of the hate and vitriol thrown at him by the fans and media and shut them all up.

Always remember …. everyone loves a good BJ.

Congrats to the Phillies

That city and the longsuffering fans deserve it. I think we all know there are jackass fans in any teams fan base. Seems to be more in the Philly fan base per capita. But as any stats person can tell you there is always an outlier. I am proud of this Rays team. I think losing the series might be a blessing in disguise. In a year in which we were supposed to be .500 at best we made the friggen World Series. If they win this WS I am not sure they would have not had an attitude of cockiness about them next year. I think getting there and losing does two things. One it lets them know … “WE CAN MAKE IT”… on the other hand it serves to light a fire that the mission of 2008 isn’t over. I still see a faint spark left and they will carry that into next season. Unfinished Business will be their Mantra next year. I love this team and this season was so awesome. I can’t wait for next year.

Joined the board sometime back in June or July. I have learned so much from this board and the people here are very knowledgeable and I love the fact that everyone around here can take a joke and has thick skin.

CONGRATS RAYS 2008 AL CHAMPIONS.

Can’t wait to see them raise that banner in the Trop. I think they should wait for our first home series with Boston to do it too.
