Leo Nunez for Mike Jacobs
Wow, questionable for the Royals.
So, Billy Butler anyone?

Let me be the first to say...
Edwin for Butler please.

Damn, how many 1B does a team need?
That’s like, half their roster are first-basemen now.
by kericr on Oct 30, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
and if Butler can play the field at all its at 1B
If Butler is available, then PLEASE get him for DH, the Royals seem to always get fleeced in their trades.

Gload is good as gone. His numbers are atrocious for a 1B.

What's so good about Butler? .725 OPS.
AAA numbers were better but evidence so far does not show that it will carry over to the bigs
by RaysTheRoof on Oct 30, 2008 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's really young
And can flat out rake. Those AAA numbers mean a lot when you’re 22. He’s going to be a hitting star. Can’t play defense at all.

Gomes?
Hits lefties better than righties, is slightly overweight, can’t field.
Upside for him is that he is younger and cheaper for the time being and obviously ceiling is higher.
Is it worth Edwin and Niemann? Maybe.
by RaysTheRoof on Oct 30, 2008 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Obviously higher ceiling is the understatement of the century.
We’re talking about a kid who put up a .291/.412/.542 line at 21 in AAA. This kid walks, he doesn’t strike out, hits for average and power. He does everything well at the plate. Gomes was putting up similar numbers at 21…in high-A while striking out 173 times. Butler is going to be a star. If we traded Edwin and Niemann for him, it would be a coup and we’d have a DH for the next 5 years.

Exactly.
This trade could work out like the White Sox trade for Carlos Quentin did. Young bat who can flat rake.

What happened to the idea of Dan Johnson being a DH?
Is this a ‘not ready yet’ senario, a ‘replace Pena soon’ senario?

Yes please
I’d be willing to go as far as Edwin and Niemann for him.

They can have Ruggs also
We can trade the guy we always hate to watch pitching(Edwin) and the 2 guys that will always rot in AAA for us(Niemann and Ruggiano)
Royals are dumb, it would even take more than Edwin I think

If I was KC, I wouldn't do Gathright for Howell
I know, JP proved shit at that point but he was a SP with a high ceiling and Gathright has always had 1 tool, his speed.

here is another good one i found on mlbtraderumors
SS – Aviles
CF – DeJesus
RF – Guillen
LF – Butler
1B – Kila
DH – Jacobs
3B – Gordon
That is 7 spots filled everyday with players who can produce. Resign Grudz or stick with Callaspo, move Teahen for a cheap bullpen arm and maybe bring in a Greg Zaun-type at catcher.
With a lineup like that, KC could be the Rays of 2009.

eh, I think the Reds will be the Rays of 09
But the Royals should continue to improve. Maybe they will finish .500 next year.
The pitching is very meh though, Greinke is awesome, Meche is hit or miss then the rest suck IMO
by joeybw on Oct 30, 2008 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The pitching isn't that bad.
Guys like Jose Guillen, Tony Pena Jr and Gload pull that team down. They also have a couple underrated arms in the upper minors.
by RATW on Oct 30, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would sign TPJ to be a reliever. He could be a league average reliver right now.
He throws a low-90’s fastball with sick movement. A developing curve. Send him to the minors for a year and you could really have something.

bruce, phillips, votto and encarnion are the bigs bats and their rotation with harang, arroyo, cueto and volquez is going to be amazing next year, i just wish that homer bailey could finally figure it all next year

Why? He'd cost nothing and be all upside.
I watched Mulder’s like 8 pitches he threw this year before his shoulder blew up again and was shocked. He hit 93. If they can figure out how to get his shoulder healthy, they could have a solid back end starter. And again, he’ll cost nothing. He has no leverage. He’s not getting a big league deal.

Zero risk, HIGH upside.
If Mulder can reinvent himself as a reliever, even though its unlikely, it would be great for the Reds.

He's saying there's not going to be a 'this year's Rays' next year.
Or, he doubts there will be a 30-game miracle turnaround story.
Undoubtedly, we will hear a lot of “Are (so-and-so) this year’s Rays?” comments in spring training next year.

I actually think this is a good move for KC.
The Royals aren’t getting anywhere near acceptable power at 1B/DH. This move puts a decent power threat at 1B/DH. Jacobs is young, cost-controlled, and around for 3 more years.
If I’m the Royals, I’m DHing Jacobs, letting Kila and Shealy play 1B, and attempting to move both of Butler and Gload (who has zero value, pretty much), focusing on pitching help with the former.
With the exception of the upper elite relievers, relievers in general are expendable. Had the Royals given up good prospects, I would disagree with the deal. Bullpens can be rebuilt pretty quickly.

Soria is signed WAY below market value for the next few years.
Look at the closer FA market. It will cost more than just one of Davis/Hellickson to get Soria.

Soria for Davis or Hellickson?
I would do that deal everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. The Rays have a question mark at closer. Soria is an up and coming All-star for the Royals. If they would like Hellickson and or Davis I would do that. No problem.
The Rays lost the World Series to bad umpires, Mother Nature, and the Philadelphia Phillies.
by thebaddancingraysfan on Oct 30, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would do this too
not because we need the “closer” role as I like the relief ace more so. But this would give us both at a low cost. Soria to get the last three outs and Balfour to put out fires. We are deep at starting pitching so we can take this hit to the rotation.

for the Marlins
this was a good move for Florida, I guess Kansas City wanted power so badly, Jacobs can sure provide that, but he sucks as a first baseman and is as bad as Hinske against left handed pitching. Being in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market I have seen Jacobs a lot, he has excellent power, but poor OBP and pretty strikeout prone when in a funk.
by sofladude77 on Oct 30, 2008 3:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, the Marlins needed to do something to improve their D, so getting Jacobs out of there helps alot.

263/291/454 v RHP, 281/324/473 v LHP. Had a bad second half, but still made the all star team. Fits the Rays mold well: athletic, good arm, good defense, speed, and kills lefties.
Plus he and Jackson are at the same point contractually, first year of arb. Seems like a great one for one swap.

Patrick (Chicago): Keith, what kind of return could Kansas City expect to get for Billy Butler?
Keith Law: The more they acquire replacements/obstacles, the less they’re going to get. If they could trade him for a couple of good-not-great prospects, that is probably their best option (well, short of just PLAYING THE GUY). Toronto would be a great fit
