Rays Preparing to Re-Sign Rocco?

Per the AP:

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rays hope to start talks soon on a new contract with right fielder-designated hitter Rocco Baldelli.

Rocco provided some pop in his at-bats this season, but I'm still unsure if I really think he's a worth a roster spot. Yes, good guy, nice story, but if he cannot play every day I really don't think I want him playing on this team. On the positive side, Rocco only swung at 28% of balls seen out of zone, the lowest of his last three seasons  I feel confident in saying he will not be making six million in 2009 like his original contact dictated.

A bit prolific this evening, are we?

I agree though. The good business move is to offer Rocco a minor league deal, or an in-house position. Of course, the Rays know more about Rocco’s actual health condition and prospects for more recovery than any of us do, so maybe they’re operating on information the rest of the market doesn’t have.

Something to consider

There are only so many roster spots here to consider. You figure Gomes is probably gone and Hinske may be cost-prohibitive. Perez has earned a shot. What do you do with RF? You have to have a stable situation there, don’t you? Do you try to upgrade Gross or just stay with that?

What I am saying is that there are only so many spots. You want someone who is flexible and doesn’t in theory have restrictions. Maybe it will work, I don’t know. My thing is the roster spots. If Floyd retires, then this is probably an easier decision, and you can find more AB’s with him.

No not Perez in RF

If thats the case, you mine as well have Rocco playing 7 innings of RF because Perez isn’t a htiter

I don't think so.

Offering him a position is great...

…but for the moment, I’m going to operate under the assumption (as foolish as it may be) that both the Rays and Rocco are being completely forthwright in the information they provide pertaining to is condition and playing abilities.

The biggest problem with Rocco is his inability to play on a daily basis. I’m not suggesting that he should be an everyday player, that’s different, but he is physically incapable of playing every day. This creates a unique problem, having a player on a team playing a position who is perpetually injured; as Baldelli cannot play either OF or DH on a daily basis.

I understand that the idea would be to have him on the squad and only have him play every few days, but I don’t like the idea of someone who has to be pulled from the game because he’s tired. This hurts the team’s depth more then it helps it, Rocco cannot be brought into situations where a game may go extra innings, and he can’t be the last guy off the bench.

Now I’m sympathetic to his blight, and I know that not resigning him would be a public-relations nightmare, so I’m hoping (assuming there is no chance that his condition will improve beyond what we’ve seen this year) that he opts to retire as opposed to play. Offering him a contract may be the right choice morally, but it’s the wrong choice strategically.

Who Said He Can't DH Every Day

Everyone seems to think that there is no chance that he can DH every, or most every day. He played 80% of the games in Montgomery and was healthy enough to be promoted. Montgomery was a combination of RF and DH. The reason that he was not in the lineup more often this past year was because of Cliff Floyd. For $8 million they were not going to play Rocco exclusively over Floyd. The compromise was a platoon at the DH position with some flexibility in RF, but it still worked out to Rocco playing mostly against left handed starters. If Floyd’s career is indeed over the candidates for DH seem to be between Rocco and Aybar. It could still be a platoon with, again, Rocco getting some RF shifts. This would allow Aybar’s switch hitting bat to be used more often. Please do not assume that based on his usage this year that he cannot play more often than he did. There were certainly games where he was willing and able, but not utilized. There is hope that a restful offseason will produce even more physical opportunities for him to play. I would hate to lose him to a team that needs a 4th outfielder (i.e.-the Red Sox).

no he wouldn't

he wants to play and believes he can. The Rays are obviously his sentimental favorite, but he’d go elsewhere to play.

Heck, what I saw of him on the field this post season, he looked pretty damn good. When he was on the field good things seem to happen. He can beat you in the field, on the bases, and with his bat so what more do you want ?

No question he definitely makes the Rays a better team when he’ s playing-and that is the bottom line.

Since when does every player on the roster have to be a 162 game player?

>> he wants to play and believes he can.

And quite honestly, he’s proven he can.

"Please do not assume that based on his usage this year that he cannot play more often than he did."

I am basing my assumptions on the fact that both Rocco and Maddon have both said at different times during the season that he cannot play on a daily basis. There’s no specification as to playing a position, it’s playing, period. Don’t assume that just because he played on back-to-back days during his rehab assignment that he can play every day, a rehab assignment is 20 days, and this disease is new to everyone; the Rays may have assigned him consecutive work days to determine if he’s capable of doing it.

Now, if Rocco can play DH on a daily basis, that would chage my opinion entirely; I’d be more than happy to see him given a shot to play a productive DH, not that he would have to play everyday, but if he’s capable of stepping into an everyday DH role in-case his platoon-mate gets injured then it’s all good.

There seems to be confusion about the difference between me wanting someone who is capable of playing every day versus someone who should play every day. I want someone who has the physical health capacity to play everyday, not an everyday player. I want someone who can be called upon at any time to be able to step in and play on short notice if he’s needed, such as an extra-innings senario, back-to-back days, or in worst-case-senarios, an injury. If Rocco is not capable of doing these things, the team is essentially shortening their bench by 1 player every day he ’can’t’ play.

I believe there were 2 games last year (one against Toronto, one against Seattle), where the Rays used every single person on the Bench because of extra-innings/pinch-hit situations. If we have situations like that next year and Rocco’s in a ’can’t play’ state, then the Rays are running a 24 man squad against a 25 man one; that’s a bit of a disadvantage.

I'm way biased

Rocco is basically my favorite Ray ever (and my favorite baseball player overall since he came up), so I can’t help but be excited that they want to resign him. It may make horrible business sense, but hell, it’s ROCCO!! You know, the guy that hit the hr to tie the game for us yesterday? Our one offensive player that came to play? I just friggin’ love the guy.

OK

If it were like 12, then maybe I would get his back.

I’d love to have him on the team, but I have to agree that he is not producing for what we need. Besides. He’s injury prone.

Horrible logic.

4HR over 80 regular season ABs in 28 games + 2 in the postseason. Not that home runs are a metric worth a damn, but his his overall stat line indicate that he can most certainly be productive if he’s healthy enough to take regular ABs.

by kericr on Oct 31, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually It Was 6 - 4 Regular Season, 1 ALCS & 1 WS

I did a quick HR per AB analysis of the team for the regular season and the playoffs and came up with these numers: 1) Baldelli 1 HR/15.3 AB, 2) Pena 1 HR/15.7 AB, 3) Longoria 1 HR/16.0 AB, 4) Zobrist 1 HR/17.4 AB, 5) Hinske 1 HR/18.2 AB, 6) Gomes 1 HR/19.3 AB 7) Floyd 1 HR/21.6 AB, 8) Perez 1 HR/21.7 AB, 9) Riggins 1 HR/22.5 AB, 10) Gross 1 HR/24.2 AB, 11) Aybar 1 HR/28.9 AB, 12) Ruggiano 1 HR/38.0 AB, 13) Upton 1 HR/44.5 AB, 14) Crawford 1 HR/49.1 AB, 15) Navarro 1 HR/67.1 AB, 16) Iwamura 1 HR/112.5 AB & 17) Bartlett 1 HR/245.5 AB. Not listed Johnson 1 HR/13 AB with only 26 at bats for the season.
What this translates to is that if each of the players had 600 AB (which wouldn’t happen in many of the cases) the following would hit 20 or more home runs: 1) Baldelli 39, 2) Pena & Longoria – 38, 4) Zobrist 34, 5) Hinske 33, 6) Gomes 31, 7) Floyd & Perez 28, 9) Riggins 27, 10) Gross 25 & 11) Aybar 21

Keep him on the team

This is the guy that came back when we were in need of some shinning light once Carl went down for (what we thought) the entire season. Rocco helped fill some voids but you can’t expect a man who hasn’t played consistently in 3 seasons to just assume the roll as the power hitter on the team.

Rocco easily gets on my fav 5 for players all time

Hell, he probably gets #1. He cares about the team much more than himself, no one has more heart. I would like him back but if he doesn’t come back then please please PLEASE don’t sign with another AL East team.
