chad cordero?
the rays are most likely going to be in the market for a closer (again) since it seems likely that troy percival has thrown his last pitch in the big leagues. So what about the rays go after chad cordero as the closer for 09? he is probably going to be the lest expensive closer option in the free agent market and when he is healthy he is really effective in the closer role. give him a incentive laden contract just for insurance if he gets hurt.

Forget the "closer" moniker.
Yes, bring Chad Cordero on board with a very low base, high incentive deal. Low risk, high reward.
There is not a need to designate any one player the “closer”.

every team needs a closer, to establish the other bullpen duties for the other relievers it just works better than having a bunch of guys do 1 job
i just went through all of the other 29 teams and all of them have closers or are going to be looking for closers
the only teams right now that dont really have closers is the tigers, mets, and the nationals

Just because every team does it doesn't make it a good idea.

And
Usually, the only reason a team does it is because they lack ONE guy capable of finishing ballgames…but if you have more than one capable guy, there is no harm in trying it.

im totally ok with a closer by committee but it rarely ever happens
so i doubt that it happens, i see them trying to sign fuentes or cordero
what i really want is for them to sign jaun cruz and have balfour and cruz share the closer role and possibly jp howell if it is a situational type save opp

Chad Cordero won't be given a major bullpen role on any team out the gate.
Whether he comes back and is able to perform well is a complete crapshoot, which is why he will be obtainable for very cheap. Very low base salary with incentives.

Beat me to the punch
If every team has one, that means Seattle, Baltimore, San Diego, Detroit, Washington, and Pittsburg all have closers…must not be all that important

Not as a closer
Don’t sign someone that shaky as a closer. If it turns out he can close, then great, but someone that injury-prone isn’t someone you can rely on for any set position.

Inconsistent and hurt
Not a future closer, nor was he by the time we acquired him. The level of misinformation that was out there when the team traded for him was ridiculous. Jeff Niemann is a SIGNIFICANTLY better relief/closer prospect if you’re looking from within, and since he’s out of options, he’ll need to be on the team next year.

Isn't there an old, often injured, ex-closer somewhere who wants to come out of retirement to play for the Rays this year?
We seem to pull people off the scrap pile for pennies every year to be our closer. Who’s it gonna be this year?

Chad Cordero
suffered a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder. The injury and surgery will keep him out until at least mid-season and possibly until 2010. Labral tears are pretty hard to get over, and the surgery does not have the high success rates of tommy john surgery. Chad Lost a ton of velocity (7 mph) this season, and he stopped throwing some of his pitches entirely (the assumption being the curveball was giving him more pain than other pitches).
While it’s possible he could eventually return, look for him as a buy-low candidate next offseason.

I have read reports, including on the tigers and cardinals SBN sites,
that say he will be back for spring training, but in my medical opinion that is total bullcrap. 12-18 months is the recovery time for his surgery, and I would not feel safe putting any innings on him before that time has elapsed.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/30/AR2008103004416.html
“He has insisted he will be ready by spring training, but complete recovery from such an injury often requires 12-18 months.”
The results are very unpredictable. I can think of three players off the top of my head who had had labrum surgery: Ryan Wagner had it and is detailed in the above article. His surgery was in june of 2007 and he has not made it back to the majors. Freddy Garcia had it in 2007 and he made three starts toward the end of last year, not pitching particularly well, with questionable status for this year as well. Curt Schilling had a similar surgery, although he has had several injuries and it’s had to tell if his problems were even primarily labrum-related (also his labrum injury was probably a different one).
http://www.slate.com/id/2100895/
The main problem is that the labrum is made of connective tissue rather than muscle, and it does not heal well whatsoever. The best way to get past labrum surgery is to give it a lot of time. Cordero does not seem willing to do that.
