Navi will move up...
if he loses a few more lbs and blocks the ball better.
His arm is great. Quick release. Strong and accurate.

Just about to say, Navi seems really low
Upton too for that matter

7th is still pretty damn good. I mean, there ARE five Molinas in the majors.

This has to be a joke.
Who the hell is John Dewhan? Ranking Longoria 9th…
More douchebaggery:
Upton, Bartlett, and Iwamura not even placing.
Melky Cabrera over Upton?
Alexei Ramirez and Cano over Iwamura?
Eric Aybar and Miguel Tejada over Bartlett?
among others….

"Who the hell is John Dewhan?"
If you’re asking that question you don’t have the right to hold an opinion about his conclusions.
(My apologies if this was undetected sarcasm.)

i'm not allowed to hold an opinion on someone's pick if i don't know who he is?
by walkoffwalk on Nov 1, 2008 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not hard to find out who it is.
There’s http://www.google.com/ or the “about the panel” part of FB’s website, here.

If you knew who John Dewan was, you wouldn't be calling his findings douchebaggery.

i don't care who he is. He ranked Longoria 9th in fielding for 3rd baseman. I think he's crazy for that. Oh, I'm entitled to my f--cking opinion.

Nobody is saying you aren't, however Dewan is not some schmuck.
His method obviously had Longoria 9th. Your method has Iwamura in the top 10. If you ask me which one is less plausible I’ll tell you the latter.

That's half of his comment.
He said if you don’t know him and his methods, how are you qualified to call his rankings crap?
Plus you misspelled his name.

It's always amusing when people take obvious hyperbole literally.
This is my point; John Dewan has forgotten about 100,000 times more about defensive evaluation than you or I will ever know. His analysis is significantly more well respected than that of anyone else. Whose opinion should we value more? That of a well respected, disinterested party who has a tremendously positive reputation for knowing what he’s talking about, or that of a partial layman? I’m going with the former on this one. It’s one thing to be skeptical, it’s quite another to dismiss something simply because it doesn’t agree with your mode of thinking.

I don't think Longoria is the 9th best defensive third baseman. While I don't have stats to back it up, I haven't seen what Dewan has to back up his assertion, either. Is the foundation to Dewan's conclusions available?

Plus, isn't it possible
That he’s rating guys on an aggregate basis, and thus Longoria missing a month and a half of the season really hurt his ranking???

Not as crazy as Mike Murphy
All the way down the line he has some crazy assertions. At three different positions, his #1 defender didn’t even crack the top 10. He said Josh Willingham was the top defensive LF in baseball. He didn’t even rank Mark Ellis among the 2Bs. Just wacky stuff.

Dewan's ratings are a trumped up zone rating, which should be pretty good.
Remember, this is a measure of 2008 fielding performance, not necessarily true fielding skill.
I agree that Upton, Bartlett, and Iwamura were average to slightly above-average this year.
Melky’s a good defensive outfielder.
I REALLY disagree (agree with you) about Alexei and Cano.

Would Crawford be decent in center?

Boy, I'd love to see him in LF at Safeco.
I’d take CC-Ichi-Wlad/Reed over CC-BJ-Gross.

...Why?
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
by P Brady on Nov 1, 2008 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree CC's a great fit for your Mariners
But Ichiro’s overrated in center, about Upton’s equal, and Wlad looked to be just awful this year. I’ll take Gross any day of the week.

Who the hell is Mike Murphy
And why is his voting so far out of whack with everyone else’s (and with reality’s – I mean, Beltre only the 10th best defensive 3B? Really???)
