You can tell Jeff tenderly loves Mr. Sonnanstine, even more than myself.

Other than luck, how can one explain why a pitcher's results would be much worse than his tRA?
by walkoffwalk on Oct 7, 2008 8:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
tRA assumes that all groundballs from all pitchers are equal
same for line drives, flyballs, etc. which is not true, we just can’t really tell them apart right now. but regressing 100% is more accurate than regressing 0%, so it’s better than ERA, OPS against, etc.

and, is it possible to maintain good results with a high tRA over a career? We know Jackson wasn't able to make it last a season. but Dice-K has been good for 2 seasons now.

Dice-K'
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Wasn't Sonnanstine's tRA like +120 or so?

matsuzaka's 2007 ERA was right in line with his tRA, a touch better than league average

Every year
I pick one Ray to be my favorite player. Last year it was Dukes. My choices are not always fortuitous. But this year it was Sonnanstine.
I like him for a number of reasons, most of them already mentioned. But first, I think the statement he does not have great stuff is hyperbole. If by stuff we mean only mid 90s heat, then it is true, but don’t balls that move in the strike zone and breaking balls that are sharp and difficult to time or hit also great stuff?
And second, I like him because he has options. Unlike pure power pitchers who are often lost if the fastball is off that day, Sonnanstine can adjust mid-game, using other pitches to compensate for the lack of one that day.
Mark Buehrle has had a fine career and has even been described as Chicago’s ace. I don’t think he threw one pitch over 89 the other day, (Andy’s fastball is usually 87-89 or so) but like Andy he also throws lots of different pitches & spots them well. The fact that he is a lefty may enhance his value somewhat and make the mediocre fastball less a problem, but I do not see why Sonnanstine cannot be successful with his stuff, smarts, competitiveness and control.
I really do not think Andy is a star, nor do I see him as a top of the rotation pitcher. He will have terrible games (20% in my estimation), and there will probably be years when he loses more than he wins because of poor run support or other factors. His ERA will probably usually be near league average, not outstanding. But teams need those kinds of pitchers on the staff. I am thrilled with his success this year.

Good post!
However, ERA is somewhat useless. Sonnanstine’s tRA is fabulous.

how can you switch "your favorite ray" every year?
by walkoffwalk on Oct 8, 2008 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps I mistated
Each year I pick one player, a relative newcomer, as the player I expect to blossom. Earlier picks included Joe Kennedy, Carl Crawford, James Shields, Steve Cox, Aubrey Huff and Ryan Rupe. I think my first pick was Rich Butler.

OT: Manny has a 50% chance of getting a ring (Boston/LAD)...
but that makes me wonder…has anyone ever lost in the world series and gotten a ring before? (which would happen if boston beats LAD in the world series).
of course, the optimal result is us winning it all.

I think he's thinking shares. Nomar got a full share of the WS win in 2004. Red Sox players voted that his contribution was enough to get a full share cash bonus for helping them get to the series.
So Manny can get a full share bonus if the Sox win. But you don’t get a ring for that.

What wha wha?
Rare genetic disorder where he ages three times faster than the normal adult? Why do I feel like this is the first time I’ve heard about this? Is that some kind of weird pop culture reference I’m not getting? He looks pretty damn well 25, not 75, to me.

Anyone see Nate Silver on Colbert Report last night?
Of course, he was there to talk about his election blog, but he did well.
He should do more interviews and more baseball talk.

can you link a video?
Perhaps hulu.com has it.
