Denver, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rockies have apparently traded outfielder Matt Holliday to the Oakland Athletics. CNNSI.com's Jon Heyman is reporting the deal, but did not know who was going back to Colorado in return.

Holliday, a two-time All-Star, hit .321 last season - his fourth straight .300 campaign - but saw his power numbers dip, as he hit 25 home runs with 88 RBI. It was the first time since 2005 that he failed to top 30 HRs and 100 RBIs.

He had been the runner-up to Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins for the NL MVP Award in 2007 when he set career-highs, hitting .340 with 36 home runs and 137 RBI.

Eligible to become a free agent at the end of the 2009 season, Colorado reportedly had offered Holliday $68 million guaranteed over four years (plus a fifth year option that could have taken it to $85 million), but he turned the deal down, instead wanting to hit the open market.

Holliday is a career .319 hitter and has hit 128 home runs, while knocking in 483 runs in his five years with the Rockies. However, he is a .280 hitter away from hitter-friendly Coors Field with 44 homers and 176 RBI in 339 games.

St. Louis and Philadelphia were also expected to be in the running for Holliday.

wow I was just going to post this

Color me absolutely stunned. I’ve heard it was for Huston Street, Greg Smith, and another guy. BLB is still lapping the world if this is right.

Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found
a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up
that much.

Carlos Gonzalez is the 3rd guy.

The guy who could come back to bite the A’s in the ass.

This.

I agree...

I really liked what I saw out of Gonzalez this year. If he batted righthanded he would have been a good fit for the Rays.

Carlos Gonzalez ain't half bad

I think he’s worth more than the draft picks. Street is more of a salary dump I guess. Smith was a mirage, so might as well sell high, I guess.

I just like that Street & Smith get traded together. They can write the Rockies’ preview guide now.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Greg Smith, Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez

for 1 year and 13 million of Holliday. Wow.

I guess the A’s are really counting on those draft picks. I would never trade Gonzalez.

Seriously, wow

And Holliday turning down over $16m a year from the Rox on top of that? That’s a really big risk considering his numbers went down last year and the economy’s taking a nosedive.

The A's just have to offer a longer term deal. I think the issue with the Rockies offer was years.

I think the Rox offered like 4-5 years. If the A’s offer 6/120 (which they can do with their payroll committments), they could probably snag Holliday.

This.

Well hey
CBSSports.com is reporting that the Rockies are acquiring Street with the intention of moving him to a third team

Plzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Wait until he flips him for most of the Yanks farm system

Good point.

I was assuming the dealing is done, when clearly it is not. Holliday will be a major dealing chip as the deadline approaches.
