SHOCKED
Another shocker from the BBWAA.
The only ones they ever get right are so exceedingly obvious.

This was a no doubter.
It’s never anyone but the best (and or) biggest surprise team.

Discussion question:
Is this the stupidest award given out?
Talking points:
-Was Joe a great manager the previous two years or did he just improve greatly?
-Was the team’s success due primarily to his skills or the skills of the players?
-What makes a manager of the year?
-etc.
-etc.

Q3)
Glasses, mohawk, wine, shifts, big words, 97 wins, kicking A and taking N
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found
a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up
that much.

They love the way he’ll tack a -y or -sy to a derivation of your last name. I

I actually DO think he improved greatly
His bullpen usage was smarter, he used different tactics to keep guys motivated, he made less boneheaded in-game decisions. The first two I think have a lot to do with the results he and management were seeking (it’s pretty clear that the AFRO treated ’06 and ’07 more like development years), but it did seem like he did a lot more this year than he had done in the past.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

I am not sure what makes a manager of the year
but my answer to your first question is yes, he was a great manager the previous 2 years. Evaluating a manager by the team’s won/lost record is as faulty an approach as evaluating a pitcher that way. I was enormously impressed by the skills and character Maddon demonstrated in his first two years-his patience, creativity, fortitude, judgment, positive attitude, attention to detail, matching of players to roles, dissecting mechanics and more. My only question was would he complement these skills so necessary to building a contender with those needed once a team actually did contend. He proved this year that he could. The award this year should really be manager of the past 3 years. Now there are new challenges which will require continued growth on his part.
It is possible that he also improved on in-game decisions as Brickhaus says. I pay little attention to that as in most cases I think it vastly overrated as an issue, and in any case different circumstances almost certainly altered such choices as bullpen usage and pinch hitting decisions. Intelligent people do change course, of course (despite the sophomoric campaign strategy of candidates who think that labeling their opponents as flip-floppers is a criticism when it is often a compliment), and Maddon is certainly learning from experience. Perhaps that accounts for perceived improvements in in-game tactics. But the key is that he has maintained a focus (allowing flexibility within it) for 3 years, and finally the won/lost record caught up.

Interesting and useless fact
a Ray and a Cub just won ROTY also, they are taking all the awards….. well until Cliff Lee wins the Cy Young tomorrow of course.

The Rays are a M.O.Y factory. Last two Rays managers won.
I know winning the award has nothing to do with this, but I think it’s great that Joe will manage the AL Allstar team in ’09.

Tim Lincecum plays for the Giants

i meant ROTY and MOTY
but yes, my statement was still false
Chalk it up to my dream of Lincecum being a Ray,

Would have happened if Friedman got his way. Lincecum was his choice. Scouts said Longoria.

Sign Bonds!

My understanding is
that the Rays had Lincecum ready to sign but were surprised that Longoria was still available and so switched the pick to him. I had not heard that there was any disagreement within the organization, only that they simply did not expect to have a shot at Longoria.

On one side
Lincecum – Price – Kazmir – Garza – Shields for many years is unreal.
On the other side, our offense without Longoira shouldn’t even be thought about.

BTW....
Maddon received 27 of the 28 first place votes.

It ain't worth winning if you can't win big

WTF with Gardenhire getting a first place vote?
by Jason Collette on Nov 12, 2008 2:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Minneapolis writer?
It was probably a homer vote from a Twins beat reporter.
by billso on Nov 12, 2008 3:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A decent arguement can be made for Gardenhire
I don’t think his team had near the amount of talent the Rays did this season. That they got where they did was very impressive. Oh, and they were super clutch, that’s obviously on the manager.
I could be wrong though

It's gotta be
One of the two Minny writers who gave Gardy a vote. You know he’ll say something about the team still having a winning record despite losing players like Hunter and Santana. They play in the freakin AL Central and didn’t win the division, he didn’t do a better job than Guillen.

While it's award season I thought I would share this with you guys. Hot off the presses.
