Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

Kerry Wood is available....

Better option then street possibly (both have their injury issues incase you bring that up).

Woods:

IP: 66.1
Wins: 5
Saves: 34 of 40
Strikes: 84
ERA: 3.26
WHIP: 1.09

Street:

IP: 70.0
Wins: 7
Saves: 18 of 25
Strikes: 69
ERA: 3.73
WHIP: 1.21

What will he cost.  How does he stack up against some of the other options avaiable?  Am i jsust rambling on to make the 75 word limit?  Wow, not there yet....but  i think i am now :P

I would be happy to have either of them in our 'pen

but I’m sentimental towards Kerry, so if I had to pick one of them, it would definitely be Wood.

what inexpensive bullpen options are out there that can get out the big bats in our division?

Who has the best makeup, ability, and fewest dollar signs that can be counted on as a late-inning reliever. I agree that the minute you put the term ‘closer’ on somebody, all it does is jack up their price, not necessarily their talent. But you still need someone who has the ability to work in pressurized situations and can get All-Star caliber talent out on a nightly basis. Who is out there?

Trading for Chris Sampson, signing Carmen Cali or John Rheinecker....

Using our pitchers in Durham. There’s more than a dozen cheap options that would work. We don’t need overpriced relievers on the free agent market.

by R.J. Anderson on Nov 13, 2008 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

I get the overpriced part

but it’s not that simple. If it were, every team would just use what’s in their minors. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Howell made the transition, but Brian Stokes did not. I would be curious to see how a Niemann, Davis type would do in our pen. I’m all for it. But, there is value in having a proven 9th inning, or late-inning reliever…especially if you want to be part of a pennant or division race. Especially when no one knows what they’re getting from the 4mil investment in Percival. Towards the end of the season our bullpen finally broke down. It would be nice to have another dependable reliever for the 7th-8th-9th. Sometimes you have to pay for that…sometimes not. But you cannot just put anyone in there.

by raysfaninminnesota on Nov 13, 2008 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

i think i'm just greedy

and probably of the old breed that likes having a shut-down reliever. But those are few and far between and extremely expensive. If we could afford it, I think that makes those four guys you mentioned even better. But I digress…What do you think of putting someone like Niemann or Davis in our ’09 pen?

by raysfaninminnesota on Nov 13, 2008 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Davis has too much potential for our 2010 rotation if you ask me

Let him start in Durham and see how he progresses and how injury free the big league team stays.

It is kind of strange

to consider someone who wants a shut-down reliever-in the sense of a closer-one of the old breed, since the old breed did not have closers. That concept is rather new.

I do not want the Rays to sign someone who has the closer tag attached, someone Maddon would be obligated to save for the 9th inning. I much prefer signing someone-or seeking someone-who has the talent to get batters out and remain flexible in how he is used.

Naturally there is a risk in that approach as you are looking at pitchers who have not yet established themselves as effective relievers. But there is also a risk with signing an established closer such as Wood or K-Rod or Isringhausen or Fuentes or any of the myriad available closers. It is not just that they are expensive and so limit the ability to sign other talent. But they are also risky because so few can remain effective for long. They are particularly subject to injury (Ffoulke, Gagne) or to sudden ineffectiveness (Koch, Street, Wohlers, Rocker). Someone like K-Rod is particularly vulnerable given his work load and mechanics, while Wood could break down any minute. Yet each would command quite a few years and a lot of money.

And on top of that, they encourage an inefficient use of the bullpen as demonstrated by the difficulty in moving away from Percival this year. In a way, his injuries were very useful to the Rays as they forced Maddon to a more rational use of the relief staff.

but it’s not that simple. If it were, every team would just use what’s in their minors. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Not EVERYONE works out. Which is why depth is crucial. As in, have a bunch of guys at minimum stashed away in the minors. If one doesn’t stick, try another one. If one’s dominating at Durham, bring ‘em up. Some aren’t going to pan out, but if you’re proactive, you’ll be able to ID the productive relievers and cut the dead weight. There is zero risk in a guy not panning out, because there’s another waiting in line to take his place.

I would be like J.P. Ricciardi.

Poaching the waiver wire for parts that have some usefulness (usually defense)

Tonight at 12:01 I wouldn’t be talking to Brian Fuentes (I wish) or Mark Teixeira, I’d be calling Carmen Cali and John Rheinecker, asking how would they like an invite to spring training faxed to them in the morning.

by R.J. Anderson on Nov 13, 2008 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

Rheino plz.

Although Carmen is cool.

What do you think the are the chances we keep Edwin...

And use him out of the Pen?
And can he ever be effective as a reliever?

by floridaroar on Nov 13, 2008 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think its necessarily a bad idea.

but the Rays will get more value out of him in a trade than they would if they kept him in the pen.

This.

by Blicks on Nov 13, 2008 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

We need another ace reliever more than we need a RF

Closer or not, we can make due with what we have elsewhere. I think most of us can live with a platoon of Gross-Baldelli in RF and Aybar as the full-time DH. It would cost much more to acquire a RF than to acquire certain shutdown relievers. And if we acquire a DH, it pushes Aybar to the bench, so we’re not gaining as much value.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Nov 14, 2008 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

No to Woody.

I can see him getting 8MM/yr. He’s good.
I could see him getting 2 years.
I like his stuff, but he’s going to end up on the DL. He always does.
Yeah, I’m a bastard when it comes to relievers.

Get a bunch of guys, see who sticks. If the number of names that have been thrown around on BtB is any indicator of the multitude of guys available on minor league deals, then holy shit you have enough guys to sign a few and try them all out.

This.

by Blicks on Nov 13, 2008 8:40 PM EST reply actions

The best part about that BtB series is we only talked about the LOOGYs.

There’s a whole world of normal-handed people sitting out there. I’m excited.

by R.J. Anderson on Nov 13, 2008 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

Righties that jump out at me.

Claudio Vargas (I like this guy as both potential starter and ROOGY)
Chris Gissell
Kevin Correia
Brian Lawrence
Emiliano Fruto
Matt DeSalvo
Vladimir Nunez
Vinnie Chulk
Chris Smith
Derrick Turnbow

I’ve looked at Vargas and Gissell a bit (Vargas mainly as a starter though), and they look interesting. I’ll probably be looking at some more righties as well.

This is exciting.

I was actually tinkering with these guys a bit. Will definitely do/share.

I was looking at a few of these guys who had starting experience (and a few others as well). Trying to truly gauge the magnitude of Jon Garland’s suckitude to prove a point to a friend. Focusing on it and a reliever aspect would be fun.

Nunez pitched a few innings in the bigs this year. With the Braves.

It’s an excuse not to work on more productive stuff, and I like numbers anyways.

This.

by Blicks on Nov 13, 2008 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Derrick Turnbow

Would be VERY interesting. I watched him completely implode in Milwaukee, which was partly due to mental issues. A fresh chance in a low-pressure (relative to the situation, obviously) role might do him very well.

He has absolutely dominating stuff when focused.

by PlayOnWords on Nov 14, 2008 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

Also

The Rays have something of a history of turning Brewer castoffs into effective role players. See: Balfour, Grant; Gross, Gabe

Really

His stuff always reminded me of Chad Harville for some reason.

Slightly OT: Jeremy Affeldt.

was ranked 15th on Keith Law’s Top 50 FA list, above K-Rod(16) and Fuentes(18), but below Wood(13).

His price just went up.

This.

by Blicks on Nov 14, 2008 10:17 AM EST reply actions

True.

So his price might not increase that much. I don’t know.

This.

This was my idea

Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found
a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up
that much.

It's a meme.

Some dumbass at another site said I claim that all ideas are mine. Same site has had people say I started the Bay-to-Rays trade, yet the only thing I did was post the MLB.com piece that said the trade was done.

by R.J. Anderson on Nov 15, 2008 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Lah dee dah

With a 28th pick overall, you’re almost better off giving away the pick and spending the money you would have spent there on 3 or 4 guys in later rounds who have dropped to sign them for way over slot (like what we did with Hellickson or Jones).

what about a incentive heavy contract for John Smoltz?
