Percival to make decision on surgeries this week

The Rays should hear from Troy Percival's camp this week on whether or not he will right knee and back surgery this offseason. Percy's agent said if he has the surgeries, he would have them as soon as possible so he can be ready by opening day. How great...can't he just retire already and free up the $4 million?

Aiden Gonzalez, who wrote the article adds these suggestions

Kyle Farnsworth, Casey Fossum, Eddie Guardado, Keith Foulke, Jeremy Affeldt, Matt Herges and Jason Isringhausen.

Immediately eliminate Farnsworth, Fossum and Herges. Affeldt will probably be overpaid leaving Foulke, Guardardo and Isringhausen. They could be the low risk/high reward signings that are Friedman's trademarks.

Percy, help the Rays, dont come back

His 4 mil would pay a lot of Affeldt’s……1st year.

I'm mildly confident in a healthy Percival.

So if he decides to have surgery and get healthy, we can get like what, 5, 6 good appearances out of him?

How good is Fossum actually?

His ERA lies, I’m sure of it.

Indie.

A 5.09 tRA is downright horrible.

A tRA over 6 last year as well.

Well, horrible for a reliever. Not that good for a starter though.

Percy, please retire. Or demand a trade back to the Angels for a bag of balls.

Immediately eliminate Foulke and Izzy as well. Foulke was horrid with the A’s in 2008 and was absolutely ineffective after returning from the DL, and I could see Isringhausen getting more than he’s worth for that 5+ tRA of his b/c of his LOLsaves.

So, off that list, its either Everyday Eddie (who had a 4+ tRA as a reliever in 2008) or Affeldt (who, as mentioned before, is way overpaid).

Retire...

Do have to thank him for the Smoltz/Avery(?)/Maddux T-Shirt though, although we need a new t for next year with Price coming. Even with the Yankees signing CC and another (Burnett/Lowe type) I would still not trade our rotations straight up for theirs even in an video game, let the t-shirts rain.

IF only Harry Carey could be arounde for Kosuke.

How about one that says

Smoltz/Avery/Glavine/Maddux -- Kazmir/Shields/Garza/Price

add Davis to that for '10

It will be like the Mt. Rushmore of young SP rosterbation

IF only Harry Carey could be arounde for Kosuke.

oh man

I will never get tired of listing that rotation

1. Kazmir
2. Shields
3. Garza
4. Price
5.Davis
CL McGee

When you cant fit Hellickson in, you are doing alright.

1) It switches off lefties and righties 2) I don’t think they will move Price and Garza up for a bit.

(goes back to dreaming of the 2010 pitching)

Maybe it's just me

but I think Percival could be effective if he would lose about 30 pounds. Obviously, this would allow him to limit the stress on his legs and back, and maybe his mecahnics would be a little better without that beer gut in the way. I’m just amazed that his conditioning was never brought up as a reason for his breakdowns.

He was listed as 6’3", 240. For comparison’s sake, Balfour (who isn’t exactly small) was listed as 6’2", 190.

I would think so too.

He’s not Joe Blanton big, but he is big.

But then, age also probably has a lot to do with his ineffectiveness, and you can’t take back 10 years of aging effects.

I know that's a pisser, baby.

I really don't think the Friedman quote means that much

I mean he isn’t going to say “Percy has nothing left, we hope he retires and we get our 4 million back” Of course he is going to act like he has confidence in him.

Who wants to bet Friedman already has teams lined up

to take on Percival for a bag of balls after all this surgery drama is over.

His ZOMG 28 SAVES must mean SOMETHING, amirite.

I know that's a pisser, baby.

Pirates are under new, better management.

It’s like thinking the Rays are still dumb because of the previous regime.

Yeah

It’s going to take a while for them to dig themselves out of their hole though, but hopefully they do it the right way.

I know that's a pisser, baby.
