Cadinals sign Trever Miller
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/cardinals-sign.html
According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals signed lefty reliever Trever Miller (pending a physical). GM John Mozeliak said southpaw relievers were flying off the shelves, so he acted quickly. It's a bit of a surprise in that the Cards were said to be targeting Will Ohman and Arthur Rhodes.
Miller, 35, posted a 4.15 ERA in 43.1 innings for the Rays this year. He held lefties to a .235/.327/.382 line. Earlier this month, the Rays chose Miller's $400K buyout over a $2MM option. Miller was a Type B free agent, so the Rays will get a sandwich pick for their loss.

Wow, this is the first time I can remember the team getting a comp pick in a long time
Vogt early, Vogt often.

I'll take the sandwich pick!
I think Miller with regress this year anyway, but kinda sad to see him go after all his time with TB. Rays should be able to find a replacement who will be just as good if not better than Miller, and we now have another 1st round(ish) pick!

He's better than a lot of people think.
But Rheinecker is just as good, if not better.

If we get Rheino and he tanks
are you going to apologize for your myopic crusade?
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found
a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up
that much.

A guy with a 5.20 tRA* in the minors last year and 5.16 in the majors is a good process?
My main intent is that there are a bunch of other guys out there so why get hung up on one guy with a funky name. I would rather see us invite 5 Rheino’s to ST for free and see which guy wants a job, then to get hung up on one.

Look at his splits versus lefties in the majors.
Also I’m not caught up on him. I have four-five types like him. Ostlund went to the Cards.

I guess it's a beautiful thing when we're worried about which loogy is going to come in and solidify our team
Don’t take it as criticism it just seems like this guy was mentioned and then the discussion stopped. I want to hear 10-15 targets that can come in for peanuts.

Yes, and there were 6-7 I believe.
R.J. Swindle
Mariano Gomez
Royce Ring
Rheinecker
Cali
Ostlund
Williams
And one other I don’t recall off the top of my head.
Plus all the actual free agents.

Stephen Randolph?
You really can’t put the actual McLefty free agents in the list.
Unless the Rays FO knows something that could threaten Miller’s effectiveness against lefties that we don’t know about, you would assume that they wouldn’t decline Miller’s option (quintessentially a 1yr/2MM contract) and sign someone else for more years + money. Affeldt is off the market, so that option’s also a no-go.
Miller’s option declined means that the LOOGY role will be filled via F.A.T. The writing’s on the wall.
I know that's a pisser, baby.

Yeah, Randolph.
Unless the market’s prices are really deflated, I’d agree.

The market will be deflated IMO
but not nearly deflated as to where you’ll get a “big-name” FA LOOGY for less than Miller’s 1yr/2MM option.
Miller got a 2yr deal, btw. Don’t know what the money terms are though.
I know that's a pisser, baby.

Actually...
Miller did not make type B status. So no sandwich pick. Damn.

Yep
There were a few places that had him listed as a Type B. But after MLBTR updated that post, I got to digging around and it looks like he didn’t make Type B.

I put them in there but they disappeared.

It'll be Miller time in Busch Stadium
I could be wrong though

oh man
the sooner we sign Ohman the sooner I’ll be relieved.
by daveh33 on Nov 20, 2008 3:34 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
There is almost a zero percent chance Ohman signs with the Rays
the Rays declined a 2MM option on Miller.
They’re not going to go out and sign a similar pitcher for more years AND more money.
I know that's a pisser, baby.

Uhhh
5:02pm: Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch talked to Mozeliak, who said Miller’s deal has not been finalized.
