Should the Rays deal Kazmir?
Sky makes the case.

I am still on the no side
However, solid points do lead me to an idea. Keep Kaz in 09, if he uses his slider all year, his value only goes up and he makes that same 9 million over the next 3 years(if option is picked up)
That way we are left with 2 choices 1) Keep the stud young SP 2) Get a insane amount of him
Of course, if he sucks next year, we get nothing but I see 07 Kaz returning next year.

Trade for Kaz
Ethier is a lefty hitter, so we would still need a RH bat
I would rather trade Kaz for others instead maybe:
Kaz to the Astros for Hunter Pence and Valverde the closer
or Kaz to the Indians for Gutierrez and Ryan Garko
or Kaz and someone like Talbot to the Royals for Teahen, Butler and Mahay (I think
right now that we match up best with the Royals)

Pass.
Valverde…the Rays don’t need an expensive reliever with the “closer” title.
Teahen isn’t that great. And, the Rays can swing a deal for Butler using lesser pieces and find Mahay production for less.
Garko isn’t special.
I know that's a pisser, baby.

Hinskes a FA
Josh Hamilton’s a bad memory… Pence and Valverde sounds good but valverde makes a lot for a bullpen guy to be on the Rays.
IF only Harry Carey could be arounde for Kosuke.

Don't you guys feel any allegiance to a player
Half the fun, win or lose, is rooting for your favorite players. I understand cost/benefit analysis and the opportunity cost. When Kazmir came over it was the first sign of hope/competence that I had seen out of this team. It was the defining moment in me going from casual Devil Rays fan to insane, borderline obsessive Devil Rays fan. It would be like breaking up with my first great girl friend. Sure there might be better options out there that are lower maintenance or are more flexible, but I will always wonder what if. I would have to treat it like Craw last year where they dangle him to see if someone gross overpays. The things you mention about his attractiveness salary-wise work just as well for our team. Would it be better to have a $15M value guy at $9M or a $4M value guy at $390,000 in the rotation. Sure a Matt Kemp-type guy might pick up the slack dollars-wise, but if he only provides 1 Win over Gross-platoon what have we gained? Sorry to go on so long, but Kaz is and always has been my favorite Ray. In 5 years will Longoria’s sexy contract make him trade bait?
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found
a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up
that much.

I somewhat agree
I like the players and am for keeping players as long as they are good deals. Especially since trading Kaz now might be trading him at his lowest value. The beauty of this team is the fact that most of it is tied up LT and poised to compete for a while. The better part of valor (IMO) would be to trade Jackson who is likely to make about half what Kaz does and be far less productive.
This would set us up to have the same roto as last year w/ Price, and an upgrade at DH/RF via trade. Or we restock the system a little more and go with FAT and a RF platoon of Gross and Nando.
I would just prefer not to trade Kaz after, arguably, his worst pro season.

Also, there's no such thing as too much pitching depth
Last year we got pretty lucky with our rotation staying pretty healthy, and I’d rather not chance having to depend on Davis, Talbot, Niemann, or Jackson too much next year (in the rotation).

Trading a guy before he makes, say, $12MM will allow you to keep multiple other favorite players when their price tag jumps from $1MM to $4MM
You can’t keep everyone. Especially into their free agent years, but also into their later arbitration years to a certain extent.

I dont see the point in trading him
unless we get someone like Braun or Hamilton back, and I doubt that ever happens.
With Prince on his way out the door in Milwaukee, Bruan is not going anywhere. Doug Melivn is too smart and knows what he has there.
Hamilton I doubt as well but Nolan Ryan is probably better suited to sucker into a deal than Melvin. My guess though, is a Crawford and Kaz for Hamilton package would be what it takes.
Here we go on this Upton, Braun, Longoria fantasy again….
I need new pants.

assuming he’s really calling the shots there and would want a Texas boy…

NO!
2-21-08 $338 on the Rays to win the Pennant at 95:1 = $32,448. -bet placed by the new Matt Garza Fan Club Preisdent.

It's fun to think about what kind of hitter we could get for Kaz
but I’m really not sure if I could pull the trigger.

Let me re-phrase this for Rays fan, who have more of an allegiance to a guy they like.
What if Kazmir and his salary could turn into a right-handed power hitter with the same salary? Would you do that? Of course.

if his name is Ryan Braun, then yes.

Well, yes, but Braun is probably a better player than Kazmir, signed for longer, and will make less money.
So it’s not exactly an even trade.
