Rays decline options on Big Red and T-Mills

Per Joe Smith (Heater)

The Rays have declined to pick up an option for DH Cliff Floyd and LHP Trever Miller for the 2009 season. Also, backup C Michel Hernandez as received an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham.

I hope they find a way to bring Mills back. He is still pretty tough on lefties.

Miller declined?

I could expect Floyd, but Miller is a shocker. A situational lefty is good to have.

The bullpen needs to be regression-proof. At least one new arm from outside the organization is going to have to be brought in IMO.

That's odd

Thought Miller was definatley coming back for 2 mil. Well, we have more money for FA’s now, not to mention that Upton long term deal!

They must have something else in mind, because with Price going to the rotation

The only lefty in the BP is Howell, and he’s too good for situational lefties. Who might they be thinking of replacing Miller?

I read somewhere (cannot remember where)

about the Rays wanting McGee to come up and be in the bullpen. I doubt his arm is ready for that, (after surgery) or that his control is ready… I agree Howell is much too useful for just lefty lefty matchups

Expect McGee to have issues next season...

Typicallt a pitcher’s 1st season following TJ surgery is a tough one. He’ll probably be plagued by bad control(which he normally has) and inconsistentcy. If his arm takes well to the TJ surgery, I would expect him to be pumping high 90’s and possibly touching 100mph in 2010 when he’ll be fully recovered. Expect some sort of impact from him that season.

Lots of LH RP options in FA

Mike Stanton
Brian Shouse
Dennys Reyes
John Parrish
Darren Oliver
Will Ohman
Tom Martin
Damaso Marte
Steve Kline
Mark Hendrickson
Aaron Fultz
Brian Fuentes
Scott Eyre
Alan Embree
Joe Beimel
Jeremy Affeldt

This list doesn’t include available SP’s who could potentially fill a RP role.

Affeldt would be a good pickup, but he'd cost more than Miller

He can get both sides out.

Maybe that’s what Friedman’s going for, with the “LOOGY” role filled internally (if we even need a LOOGY, just having guys who can get lefties out will do).

Affeldt would be a fantastic low-buy reliever with the possibility of becoming a relief ace.

He had it all last year — high strikeouts, low walks and lots of groundballs. He had a career high in HR/FB rate but that’s likely variance. Yes he’ll cost more than a loogy, but there’s a really good chance that he’ll be undervalued enough that the Rays can afford him, and he’d be a proper investment. Promise him a legitimate shot at the closer’s role, and thus the opportunity for closer money on the free agent market next year, and I think it’d be a really good match to make the Rays’ already very good bullpen become among the elite.

But whoever lands him, he’s a smart buy.

Agreed, as long as it isn't on a longer than 2 years deal.

No more than two years.

(it was rumored that Affeldt desired a long term deal last year, which is a horrible idea).

That's a really good sign.

I think Z will do fine with the M’s.

LOOGY's have some value, but are easy to find, and Miller wasn't all that special

Not a position worth spending any money on for the Rays

Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.

Or at the very least

Considering how flooded the market will be with loogys this offseason, we can probably get a better one for the same price.

Vogt early, Vogt often.
