Holliday for Crawford?
Matt Holliday, barring a dramatic reversal, will be traded this winter. General manager Dan O’Dowd made it clear Tuesday that he’s not afraid to play kids or unproven players when I asked him about starting Ian Stewart, Seth Smith and Ryan Spilborghs in the same lineup. Holliday should fetch a big return, but there’s no perfect deal out there. The Rockies want pitching which is why they have spoken with the Rays, who could part with Edwin Jackson or Andy Sonnanstine. Carl Crawford’s name has also surfaced as someone the Rays might be willing to give up for Holliday.

Slipborghs fits well in this lineup
Although he’d be duplicative of Rocco. Still, he’s only half of a platoon, unless you think Aybar really is the answer at DH.

just as long as they go for more offense
If the prospect list is very little (just a throw in w/ Crawford and E-Jax) then this isn’t a bad choice at all. Holliday is a upgrade over Crawford and not much of an increase over his salary. As long as this still allows the Rays to add someone like Milton Bradley at DH then it’s a good move for the Rays.

Except for 1 thing.
CC has an option for 2010, so the Rays are in the driver’s seat in terms of keeping him. .
Holliday is an FA after the 2009 season. He will easily get a 100MM contract.
One year of CC + 2 draft picks >>>>> 2 draft picks.
This.

maybe so
but in terms of what Crawford does, there are more inexpensive options. Crawford’s team option for next year is around 10 mil. I’d rather have the draft picks to keep the team’s lifeline going. If the Rays are going to have any chance of sustaining their success, it’s going to be their minor league system and how they can be most efficient with their player salaries.

Agreed
Him leaving would not be the same for me as when Huff or Hall left. If it helps us in signing Beej for the next quarter century I will be able to move on a lot easier.

why could that NEVER happen?
I agree we’d probably have to add but Atkins could be a good DH option for us and also play the corners (maybe not great) if needed. Two years of team control left also, I think.

No way in hell this deal is done straight up.
We send away CC, who will make $8 million, so we can have a one year rent a player in Holliday. I laughed when I first heard this rumor. Sounds like a wishful fan made this one up.
The Rays lost the World Series to bad umpires, Mother Nature, and the Philadelphia Phillies.

What about
EJax, Nado and Neimann for Holliday? Might be light but maybe they would like Nado in CF?? Tavares someone they are looking to trade from what I’ve heard.

hmmm
someone over at MLBTR suggested that if the rays were willing to neglect upgrading offensively they could dedicate that extra salary room (from percy maybe, floyd, ejax, miller) into a trade for jake peavy, The Rays probably couldn’t afford it at around $15mil for four years, but he sure could be worth it if he was willing to play in the AL. Just wondering what you guys thought might be fair and if this could make sense possibly seeing as the cubs are front runners with bad prospects.
IF only Harry Carey could be arounde for Kosuke.

I Like Me Some Peavy
But acquiring him just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for the Rays.

The Cubs ain't front runners, sorry.
Braves should/will outmatch any Cubs offer.
They don’t need to give up Heyward/Hanson/Schafer/Freeman to outdo anything the Cubs will give up

I agree
that the Cubs while everyone is calling them the current front runners are not the long term front runners, I was just making a point that with their really crappy old prospects the cubs are the ‘favorite’ at this time to get Peavy, we have 15-18 players deep in our farm system that could match up and be better than some of the prospects the cubs are offering, we could maybe see this as a way to sell on Kaz too and get a better pitcher with a longer contract and be able to get prospects in return for Kaz. And because this might make some sense it would never happen.

Why sell off on Kaz?
Edwin needs to be gone before Kaz, and this is the perfect sell-high time for Edwin.
EJax AND Kaz gone means someone undesirable(like Hammel) could be in the rotation behind Shields, Garza, Price, and Sonny. Or maybe Niemann could be starting, but I’m not sure, and would rather not take that risk.
This.

this trade does not make much sense to me...
we need one more good outfielder for the roster….so why give up one to get another one? I can see giving up some pitching….but not our starting left fielder for another outfielder for one year.

well if it helps
The trade idea seems to of been forgotten, now the rumor is Phillies are going after Holliday aggressively, A’s want him a lot also and the Rays are just a distant 3rd.

That seems out of personality for Beane to try acquiring a big money free agent in the last year of his deal.

He will wind up in Boston or New York like everyone else, they don’t care that they have no room for him, anything to spend money and add another All Star

Well
the Rockies really only wanted Ludwick, the Cardinals have offered Ludwick, Shumaker and Mitchell Boggs so it looks like he will go to St. Louis.
That would make Holliday, Ankiel, and Rasmus
Think they will still trade Ankiel?

That is a fleece job by the Rockies if it went down.
I would then think that one of the OFers would be flipped for pitching help, since that’s what they truly need.
Mozeliak REALLY shouldn’t make that move. Ludwick could be worth 10 fewer runs above replacement next year, and if Holliday matched his 2008 performance, Luddy + Schu would still have a greater TVAR combined than Holliday.
And this isn’t taking into account what Boggs does next year.
This.

And Holliday's gone after one year, whereas the other guys will be around for a while.
And they’ll earn less than Holliday combined next year. Dumb dumb trade for the Cardinals.
