Yanks decline arb on Abreu
Color me surprised. I'm sure Abreu psyched because they may make him an additional few million. That bumps him up on my list of FA DHs.

No, it cost him a ton of money
No doubt he would have accepted arbitration. He made 16 million this year, had .371 OBP and almost hit .300. He may not have been a very good baseball player because of his defense, but he wouldn’t have taken much of a pay cut in arbitration if any. Now he’ll be lucky to make 16 million in the rest of his career.

That might be hyperbolic, he can still hit.
But he’ll have to bounce around the league for a few years as a DH, but he could have still done that if he played for the Yankees and made 16 million this year.

You don't think he'll get at least 3/20?

I doubt 3, but maybe.
I admit, I was a bit overboard, but still, it’s a no brainer to accept if he’s offered arbitration. If he hits like he did this year again, he could have still gotten that 2/15 deal the next year. I’m just saying this shouldn’t have been surprising, it was a no brainer for the Yankees. It wasn’t worth the risk.

Not necessarily
He wasn’t under team control arbitration, so he could have gotten a big pay cut. He gives his number, the Yankees give their number, and the arbitrator picks the one he thinks it closer to what the player deserves. It’s not like for players under team control where the team can’t offer a figure lower than 80% of the prior season’s salary.

Where did you get that there is a difference?
I’ve never heard that the 20% rule doesn’t apply in these cases. Not saying you’re wrong, just curious.

Abreu is only 34
He seems to be in decent shape and could still give you a .300/.400/.500 season, would he be a Type-A FA? I would definantly like to see Abreu here if he is a Type-B and he would sign for like 2/16.

Is it even possible?
For the Rays to sign Abreu with his potential salary? I thought we were on a tight budget? I don’t think he will take anything less than 12 million. If we pick him up who do we shuffle around and do we still have cap to address other needs?

I'd imagine he would be our DH and occasion RF.
I was under the impression that there is about $10-15mil to play with depending on Percival etc. Obviously the Rays would need him to take a hefty pay cut, one that he probably won’t.

He's Hinske bad in the OF, but with a much better arm.

So at that point: around 6 million to play with, Floyd/Miller saved 3.35 million, so that gives us 9, and if Gomes is non-tendered along with Percival hopefully retiring, frees up 5 million more. If not, and Gomes is non-tendered, then we have 10 mil, but with quite a few arb eligible players.
In other words: hope Percival retires and pray for ticket sales.
