Gomes Non-Tendered
In sad, but not surprising news Jonny F'ing Gomes has been non-tendered. Good luck, Jonny we'll miss you
The Rays on Friday declined to tender a 2009 contract to Jonny Gomes, making him a free agent. The Rays would be open to bringing Gomes back – most likely on a minor-league contract – if he can’t find employment elsewhere, but given Gomes’ power potential if given regular playing time, they expect him to find a taker for his services.

Gomes time here wasn't always pleasant.
But I have fond memories of him, and I wish he could’ve regressed with us. I hope he lands in Seattle and gets 500 ABs.
Preach
It’s too bad the Rays didn’t just set Gomes free a couple of years ago. Now that he’s 28 and coming off a terrible season, he’s going to have a hard time finding a team that will give him playing time. Gomes doesn’t have the kind of swing that will allow him to contribute as a once- or twice-per-week guy. As a full-time DH or right fielder, he’d likely be just fine.
And now we officialy need Milton Bradley
So some one can give a SP who hits one of our guys a beat down.
Friedman already knows that, though, I am sure.
Yes.
I’d love to see Sabathia have a bag of balls thrown at him
9=2 apparently

The day the brawlfense died.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
hey we got Glen Gibson(who should of been decent anyway) in Low A
for a guy that we pretty much came out and said we have to get rid of.
You never know.
He's a 1.9 WAR player.
That’s a discount.

Best case: 1.5.
That assumes his bat is worth 5 runs and his fielding is 2.

Worst case: 0
And he’s more likely to be closer to the worst case than the best case. Ruggiano doesn’t seem to be able to catch up to fastballs that go over 93 or so (without wildly guessing), and has trouble with breaking stuff, and lays off too many good pitches. If he gets a roster spot, it should be strictly as a platoon to face lefties, but a lot of the lefties in our division would probably still just blow him out of the water.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
gonna miss ya Jonny
I remember in ‘05 or ’06 against the Yankees at the ’historic’ trop, Sheffield hit a monster home run to put the Yankees up in the 5th, but in the 8th Gomes came around from second to score on a supermanesque slide under a tag that ended up being the game winning run that night, especially sweet because I spent $200 on the tix and was there with a yankees fan, gomes character was a nice side story from a lot of the rays previous W-L results…
IF only Harry Carey could be arounde for Kosuke.

On the non tender subject?
Anyone think we should give Saito a ST invite? He should be cheap and if he has gotten over his injury problems, he is a very good reliever,
I doubt either makes the team
but why not give it a shot with nothing to lose?
I still would like to give that ST invite to Prior also, we need to improve our DL player.
Saito is sick, when healthy.
Unless there’s something wrong with him where he’ll miss most of the season, a ST invite might be a smart idea.
And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic...
I hope Jonny lands in LA, close to his home and tears the cover off the ball.
You weren’t the most talented player on the team, but you were certainly of of the most liked players. Best of luck Gomer.
Gomes was pretty much the easiest guy to cheer for, ever
Go tear it up somewhere, Jonny. National League, preferably.
that would be funny if kc signed him (coco and gomes on the same team)
seattle would be better off signing him than griffrey though, since gomes actually has a chance to make something of himself and unfortunately jr. is close to being finished

who needs k-rod for 37 million when you can have d-rod for 50k?
Godd luck to ya Jonny. A shelfish part of me wants you to sign a Triple AAA contract with us with an invite to Spring Training.
But I could maybe see in Oakland as the 4th OF/DH splitting time with RF Travis Buck. Isn’t Oakland the closest team to where he was from?

Mmm I could see it.
I could see Gomes as the 4th OF/bench bat, probably spelling someone once in a while when a lefty is on the mound.
And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic...
San Fran is just as close and could actually use an all-swing gamer like Gomer
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

Easily one of my favorite Rays players...he's such a great guy
I don’t think there’s a possible way to root against the man.
By the way, that last picture is by far my favorite. Beating down Coco is classic too, but that picture says it all. Too hilarious….

coco deserved it and it brought more of the guys together and gave teams a dont mess with us or else! we arent afraid to have a thrown down if it comes down to it! lol

“I’ll tell ya what… it doesn’t suck!”
I will miss you Jonny Gomes…maybe not your fielding or your batting… but i’ll miss the bizarre camera shots of you doing random stuff in the dugout and your great quotes.
lossing gomes and rocco in 1 offseason is saddening but it has to happen
2 of my favorite rays players when i 1st started following them, but i understand that these 2 almost have to go, since rocco cant play everyday and gomes isnt good enough anymore

I am quickly growing to absolutely hate Superbad for the same exact reasons why I hate Napoleon Dynamite.
Napoleon Dynamite was slow and boring and unfunny.
Superbad is just quoted way too much.

The Rays just got 2 new options for their holes:
- Joe Nelson (RHRP) … non – tendered by Marlins … has great splits vs. Lefties
- Ty Wigginton (COF, IF) … right handed power bat … could platoon with Joyce and be a backup plan if we don’t get Baldelli, Bradley or Burrell.
Any thoughts on Chris Britton?
Little chance so far in the majors. Seems to have very good success at minors, including AAA. Still young.
I figured with Gomes gone, it's a good time to ask
Just out of curiosity, I honestly don’t know the answer. Is there any other team with good D at every spot?
C Navarro – His arm seems to keep getting stronger and well he is sort of better than Riggans, I would say.
1B Pena – A gold glover who deserved it, one of the best defensive 1B in baseball
2B Iwamura – Ok, even if he is average like people say, that is far from bad and I find him above average
SS Bartlett – The dude won MVP for craps sake! No but he has great range and seems to get to every ground ball
3B Longoria – Showed a lot of defense potential in his rookie season, may even get better
LF – Crawford – Has a chance to win a gold glove every season
CF – Upton – That arm is unfair and his speed gives him great range
RF Joyce – SSS but he has always been regarded as a great defensive OF’er
So can any other team say they have good D at all 9 spots? (8 in the NL’s case)
