New Options with non - tendered players?

When looking at the non - tendered players from yesterday I found some interesting names for the Rays in '09:

- Joe Nelson (RHRP) ... He is very good against lefties and not bad against righties either (at least in '08) ... okay, he earlier failed in Tampa but he could be worth a shot!

- Ty Wigginton (COF, IF) ... Another Ex - Devil Ray ... He could be our backup plan if we fail to sign Bradley, Baldelli or Burrell (I would prefer him to Giambi and Abreu because of his splits) ... He could platoon with Joyce in RF and play some DH against righties ... He could also give CC some time at the DH spot to rest his knees ... would be a good signing

- Takashi Saito (RP) ... Depends on his medical status of course ... could be very interesting for the later parts of the season when Percy will go down again!

What do you think?

Any other interesting non - tendered names?

I think there is some consensus that Wigginton will be expensive.

He got over $4 million in 2008 and had a good year. Before we got Joyce, I thought he might be a consideration as the role player Friedman talked about, but I doubt the Rays are willing to spend what he would command for a platoon right fielder who is not particularly good on defense and whose other roles are duplicated, and possibly played better, by Aybar and others.

I mentioned it elsewhere that I think Chris Britton is an interesting name. He has only pitched 89.1 innings in the majors with pedestrian results, but in the minors over 251 innings he has a 3.69/1 K/BB ratio and has given up very few home runs. Because he has so little major league exposure, his numbers are not very enlightening, although lefties did kill him while he handled righties very well. In the minors, he has had much less of a split.

There are also a few lefty relievers non-tendered, but none seem particularly suited to a loogy role as far as I can tell.

Nelson does strike out a lot of people and does not give up many homers, but he also walks more than 4/9 innings, and while he may compensate with the Ks, it is frustrating to bring in relievers who you cannot depend upon to throw strikes. I always feel that Balfour is on the edge of disaster for that reason, although he did improve in that regard this year. The reason I think Britton has a chance is that he does not walk many and in the minors struck out hitters at a good rate. He did not carry that over to the majors, but perhaps he needs more time.

Jep you are right

… Willingham would cost about 7 Mio. a year!

But he would not just be the platoon RF, he would play most of the time at DH (particularly against righties) and just if Aybar/Zobrist/Joyce are not capable of playing good against Lefties in RF he would be able to do that, too!

Chris Britton seems to be a good option, too … but we need a good pitcher against lefties more, I think! And … Britton is way more hittable than Nelson is! Nelsons walk rate went down significantly, despite still being a bit high!

Umm what

Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

But the point Friedman has made all along is that

the Rays intend to acquire one impact hitter and one role player. Right now, Joyce is the role player; Wigginton is definitely not an impact hitter. He is a role player, and one we already have in abundance. And he is not even particularly good against RH pitchers, so as a regular or semi-regular DH he is simply superfluous.

If the Rays are going to spend $7 million or so on a hitter, Wigginton is about the worst choice they can make.

As for Britton being more hittable than Nelson, there is not enough major league experience for Britton to compare, although the difference there is not great with Britton allowing 8.4 hits/9 IP and Nelson allowing 7.8. In the minors, Nelson allowed 8 hits/9 IP and Britton just 7.4, so at least to the extent that demonstrates anything, it favors Britton.

Re: WIgginton

He’s projected at -8 in the corner outfield and -8 at third. Even if you assume he’s only -5 at third (which adds a positional bonus) he’s more like 1.7 WAR Than the 2.7 he was last season. Check out his HR/FB% last season as well; 18.5% compared to a career 13.5%.

He’s worth around 7 million (last year of arb, 1.7 WAR) and for that I doubt we’re going to match his financial desires.

Wiggy would be awesome to have back, but I know it probably won't happen.

Thanks for the memories, Wiggy, they were great!

I don't see that the market will push Wiggy to $7 MM.

Teams don’t seem inclined to drop that on guys that slot as floating corners / DH’s. Who that wants or needs him will push him to that level? The teams he’s been linked to thus far – SF, Minny, Cleve, Pitt – aren’t likely to go there. The $ comp in MLBTR was Blake – nearer $5 than $7.

Not to say jump in there – just saying that figure seems high.

Britton is an interesting option – seems a minor w/ invite deal could be a good get for pen depth. The latest joke about him in NY was that he landed a Greyhound Bus sponsorship – he did bounce back and forth from AAA quite a bit in his 2 years with the Yanks, but neither Torre nor Girardi seemed to have enough confidence in him. I think he’d be a good pickup for some team – he’s still young, has majors experience, etc. NY has too many young RRP’s at their upper levels that appear to have more upside to hang on to him.

And of course, NY likely has more shopping to do, so more will become available. Perhaps Mr. Gomes’ rumble opponent Mr. S. Duncan will interest you – he’s a DFA candidate with the next NY acquisition or 2. Dan Giese is another possibility if a long reliever / spot starter suits you, though it seems to me that’s Niemann’s job this year.
