While the Reds are trying to sign free-agent outfielder Pat Burrell, they are also looking at more affordable right-handed hitting options, such as Rocco Baldelli and Juan Rivera

I love you Rocco
but if another team looking for a OF doesn’t take 1 of our targets, I will be a happy man..

Pass
The Reds, Braves and Rays are still showing interest in Dye.
More of the same ol’ same ol’
The Rays are in much better position to attract free agents now after their miracle season and obvious new direction (up). They are intent on adding a DH or perhaps a right fielder and are looking at Milton Bradley and Bobby Abreu, and will consider others such as Pat Burrell, Jason Giambi, Garrett Anderson and Orlando resident Ken Griffey Jr

Uh oh
Well on the bright side, free agents might start flying off the shelf soon
But on the bad side, that is because Tex may sign with the Red Sox soon…..

I'd say you're right

Getting Juan Riviera, Garrett Anderson or Ken Griffey
means we lost the FA battle
Hopefully we do better than one of those

It means we're going to sign a full-time DH.
That means it’s most likely to be one of Abreu, Bradley, Burrell, Dunn, ect. group.

I just don't think Friedman gave us some more spending money
Just for one of those 3, you know?
I think he wants the same players we want.

Getting Garrett Anderson or Ken Griffey
means management suddenly starts liking wasting money. Sure, they’re sending out smoke signals on those two to drive the price down on the guys they really want, but I’d be absolutely shocked if we sign either of those two.

It is frustrating to be
in a division where your rivals will add 1/2 a billion dollars in payroll
by Raymondo on Dec 18, 2008 8:15 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
They're not adding half a billion dollars in payroll.
A TON of payroll came off the books for the Yankees. And the Red Sox (if they sign Teixeira, it will just be replacing the Manny money with Teixeira money)

don't forget
If the Yankees sign Manny, they will move Damon to CF and have Manny, Damon, Jeter, Cano, A-Rod and a injured Posada all playing in the field.
But they have Swisher !

heh with them its more likely
That they would trade 1 of them and then trade for Cameron. Never can have too many stars!

Looks like you nay be right
The Yankees got back to the Brewers regarding the Mike Cameron talks on Thursday, but there’s little momentum towards a deal.
“[Yankees GM Brian Cashman] basically just wanted to tell me why he hadn’t called,” Brewers GM Doug Melvin said. “He said he has had a lot of things going on. I told him we’re probably going to hang on to Mike.”

Not really. Yes the NYY are
dropping $82 million, but adding Sabathia ($161), Burnett ($82.5) and Swisher ($) SO FAR
BOS adds Tex at $180 million
ANd let’s not forget the jumps (Cano, A-Rod, Bay, Nady, Pedroia, Youk, ….

Those are overall contracts, not per year salaries though.
Yeah, they’re adding a ton in overall contracts, but they still haven’t gotten their 2009 payroll back to 2008 levels, if I’m right.

would need to go nearly 18-0 v BAL

don't forget that we almost didn't
Rays were a combined 17-19 in the regular season against the Yankees and Red Sox. The Rays only won the division by 2 games last year. And that was with the Yankees being mediocre. The point is, now that the Yankees have once again loaded up, it’s not just the Red Sox that the Rays need to contend with, even though they struggled against the Yankees last season. Even more than ever the Rays need to split their games against the top two teams in order to have a fighting chance to make the playoffs. Such is the challenge in playing in the AL East.
by raysfaninminnesota on Dec 19, 2008 12:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ahhh yes the myth that the Yankees were mediocre last year
I believe by 3rd order wins they were the 3rd best team in MLB last season. It’s not that they were average it was that the Rays and Sox were better. No slight considering they were the two best teams by 3rd order wins. Somebody stop me if my memory is failing.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

they were "mediocre" by their standards
that’s just about as ‘mediocre’ as they get with a payroll of 200mil. Take a look at their rotation. Take a look at their bullpen. They were able to cover up some of their holes, but it doesn’t make them a great team. By their standards, they were mediocre.
by raysfaninminnesota on Dec 19, 2008 6:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They were one of the five best teams in baseball.
I don’t think that can be called mediocre.
by R.J. Anderson on Dec 19, 2008 6:38 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
by THEIR standards you are wrong
they finished strong which helped get them a good overall record, but if not for an almost Colorado Rockie-type finish, it wouldn’t have been as good. The Yankees were really only mediocre by their own standards…they were never really a factor in the playoff hunt for most of the season. And the Yankees were tied with the 7th best record in baseball last year. Not sure what stats you are using, but according to the bottom line, they were not in the top 5 teams in baseball last season. And because of that very fact, the Yankees, by their own standards and the Steinbrenner Doctrine, they were at best mediocre last year. Their mediocre, however, is better than most teams ‘great’ on most seasons.
When you look at their payroll and resources and that team last year and the results, the overall cannot be considered anything more than mediocre. What else do you call a team that finishes with a good record, but not good enough for the playoffs?
The Yankees finished with their worst record in 8 years. They didn’t even finish with a 90 win season, for the first time also in 8 years. They were only 8 games over .500 this season. Again, this might be a good year to most teams, but how quickly we forget what team we are speaking of here. This isn’t just ‘any’ team. And no matter how anyone tries to spin the facts, last year’s Yankee team was plainly and simply, mediocre.

I wish fans would stop obsessing about salaries and team budgets.
They have some impact on pennant races, but are not determinants. Plus, the possibility of saying anything new about the issue is so remote as to make all references cliched and boring.
Budget differences are one among many factors that play into a team’s competitiveness. We know some teams have an advantage there, but even if they also have smart front offices it does not guarantee much-perhaps that they will be a factor in the division race, but not more than that.
So let’s concentrate on what the Rays need to maintain their superiority in the division. There is plenty of talent available, and the fact that some of it commands enormous salaries does not necessarily mean it gives the teams willing to pay for it an absolute advantage over those who know how to find and use less expensive talent.

With the HUGE budgets come other factors that can hurt LT success...
The one that seems the worst is the Yankees inability to rebuild when seemingly necessary. Looking to fill ST needs with LT commitments (addressing the “need” for pitching this offseason for instance).

Per MLBTR
According to Yahoo’s Tim Brown, the Angels are nearing a three-year agreement with free agent outfielder Juan Rivera.
If true my response: YAY!
and from Red Sox owner John Henry
“We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor.”
Double Yay!
