Percival Set For Surgery; Expected to be ready for Opening Day
In news we expected, Troy Percival will have surgery on his back today and plans to be ready by opening day per The Heater. This pretty much dashes any hopes of Percival retiring and freeing up $4 million dollars in salary for 2009. He will have the surgery in California.
He will have the surgery done by specialist Dr. Robert Watkins in California and if all goes well is expected to be throwing off a mound by early March.
Percival will turn 40 next season and is coming off a poor injury filled 2008 season. I can only expect more of the same in 2009.
There was some good news last night as Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell and Adam Dunn were not offered arbitration. The Rays would not lose a draft pick if they were to sign here. The Yankees declined arbitration to Jason Giambi, but that was expected. As for projected targets: Milton Bradley, Brian Shouse, Dennys Reyes and Raul Ibanez, they were all offered arbitration from their current teams.

He's not a tough guy, he's a smart guy.
Why leave 4 million on the table. That’s just silly.

Because he's a good guy, great with the clubhouse, team guy!
Who also gets into fights with his manager on the mound, plays through talent depleting injuries, and doesn’t retire despite being often injured and often suckish.
At least he’s funny in spring training though.

If he suffers a major injury do we get the money back?
Like a beating from a hammer during spring training?

No, but a mob of people with hammers approaching him
could persuade him to hurry up and fill out that retirement agreement.
Jon Garland, pleasepleaseplease accept arbitration. Your mad iNNiNgZ eAtEr sKiLLz will be greater exemplified in next year's free agent class. kthxbai.

I don't see how you can be angry at Percival.

Hmmm
From Buster Olney
A month ago, the notion of Abreu as a $16 million player didn’t seem so outrageous. In the current climate, however, executives with other teams believe Abreu might be fortunate to make $8 million.

Friedman should tell Percy
that he’ll be relegated to mop-up duties. It’s a kind way to “ask” him to retire.
I wonder if the Angels would take him back…They ARE losing K-Rod and probably Darren Oliver also…

Darren Oliver is a Type-A FA.
He’s not going anywhere.

Reagins still needs a K-Rod replacement though.

They haven't won a WS since Percival left, you know.

It's not like Percival would help them.
But you make a good point.
Seriously though, if the Rays can’t pawn him off to some stupid team and get rid of the monetary commitment, I’d be in favor of his outright release. He’s a waste of a roster spot.

I'm not sure what makes me sadder.
Us using a closer or us using Percival as the closer.

i just have a gut feeling that he is going to be the closer next year if he proves this spring he can stay healthy
then he is going to get hurt and yell at maddon that he can gut it out and go on the DL and again try and again fail and repeat until retired
everything Rays,Marlins,Twins and Reds

Well, if he is hell bent on coming back...
At least we can wish the guy luck. We signed him to the contract, time to suck it up and hope he can contribute.
