Havent heard official info yet but looks like they got him cheaply

Now if they get 1 more good or great SP, they will be scary. Back to Peavy talks?

i agree now that I know about Flowers

They would have to give Hanson in the deal and they refuse to

Word is that they're still looking to add an ace, like Peavy or Burnett.

I don’t think Peavy is worth the price the Padres seem to be asking, although I’m sure they’ll get it.

Lillbridge, Reyes, another spect for Vazquez

Dunno if they gave too much here and isn’t Lilbridge their 2B? Who is now?

by joeybw on Dec 2, 2008 6:40 PM EST reply actions

Ok, no Reyes

but instead it’s Flowers and a 3rd spect that is unknown. Flowers is a very high offiensival potential C, if he can improve his defense, this will be a great deal for the Sox.

wow, if a Flowers/Lillibridge/Shafer package happens this is great for the WhiteSox

that being said Vazquez projects well to Atlanta as his big problem was HRs and the Cell isn’t really the best place for that, Atlanta, on the other hand, is.

It could be good for both teams, but both teams still need more, the Sox need more to have a successful rebuilding and the Braves need another pitcher/player or two to compete, but its a good step in both team’s target directions

Great Deal for the Braves

They gave up Brent LiL (very expendable), john gilmore 3B (19) prospect, Tyler Flowers- good but McCann has that locked down, and another pitcher who is not one of their top pitcher prospects.

They got a steady No. 3 pitcher no doubt. Vazquez was the 2nd best K man in the AL. Plus I think turner field is a little for pitcher friendly as well. They got a steal.

Word is they are also close to a Burnett deal. I think they also try to swing another pitcher and a right handed OF power bat not named Pat.

Decent deal for the Braves

Lilibridge can’t hit and between Martin Prado, Yunel Escobar, and Kelly Johnson there wasn’t any room, Reyes showed some signs but is essentially a swing man, not familiar with the other pieces. Add Vazquez and potentially Burnett to a rotation with Jurrjens, Campillo, and either Smoltz (who knows) or Tommy Hanson/Charlie Morton and the rotation all of a sudden doesn’t look too bad. It’s a shame Hudson is having TJ surgery, otherwise it would be lights out.

Lillibridge isn't necessarily going to be that bad of a hitter

He was awful last year, but he used to be an on-base machine. I’m guessing his approach changed in the last couple years based on his statistics, and his offensive value has plummeted.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

If Vazquez were a free agent right now, what would his price be?

Probably more than $11.5MM, but more than $15MM? Probably not. Was it worth giving up all those prospects to get Vazquez at a small discount in price?

The Problem is

That the Braves where sold on the fact that Lillibridge can’t hit, and as a utilityman hes not all that useful despite helpful defense up the middle. Flowers is blocked by McCann regardless of his development, and the Braves seem to be in a “win-now” mode, with the rumors of a five year offer in the works toward A.J. Burnett.

It makes sense for the Sox as they cut salary to possibly add a pitcher they feel will be better, which I’m not particularly sure of. I think Vazquez will see an improvement in his HR rate (his only real glaring weakness) in Atlanta, and a 128 tRA+ is nothing to sneeze at.

I get the deal for both sides and aren’t quite sure which side I like more. Ask me in four years when we get a better picture of santos’ development

by Navi's_Navy on Dec 4, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

I do agree it's a win now mode

But only because they struggle to fill the seats with them losing lately. They need the revenue to make a buyer more interested in actually buying them from the corporation they are under. Few months back Ted Turner publicly said he would be interested in purchasing the braves again. Speculation at best but you get my point?

by Charmin519 on Dec 4, 2008 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Also, if you look at the Braves' needs as opposed to the market

you see that they can fill two of their biggest needs (bullpen, OF), at a lower premium than they probably would have been able to in an earlier year.

I don’t think they trade for Peavy, instead opting to sign a SP and an OF. Which, I think they can afford easily.

If two of Soriano or Moylan or Acosta comes back healthy and effective, that is one hell of a strong pen.

Jon Garland, pleasepleaseplease accept arbitration. Your mad iNNiNgZ eAtEr sKiLLz will be greater exemplified in next year's free agent class. kthxbai.

Only Flowers was a A type prospect.

Gilmore is way to many years away. They basically gave up their scraps and ONE good prospect that wouldn’t play for them because of their 3 time ALL STAR catcher. They gave up nothing in regards to their farm system. This was a steal for them.
