Free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira has reached agreement with the New York Yankees on an eight-year contract worth more than $170 million, a source involved in the negotiations tells ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

I knew something was up when the Angels withdrew.
I hope the Steinbrenners become the victims of a ponzi scheme, and are unable to make their payroll.

Umm Shirley you can't be serious
There defense is awful everywhere. Injury concerns at SS, C, LF, DH, and at least 3/5ths of the rotation.

You can have a shit defense and pitching
But if your offense puts up 10 runs a night and it will. It will not matter anymore. Prepare for records runs to be scored and home runs to be hit in this new Yankee stadium. And No I am not trying to hype the yankees of anything it just seems like this is the end.

Not so sure they have shit defense everywhere
Other than Jeter, their infield defense is pretty solid, and having Tex will only make it look better, because then they can shift Cano a little further over so Jeter doesn’t need to cover as much ground.

Yes, OF defense is horrendous
And Cano’s defensive stats for ‘06 and ’07 were all well above average. His ’08 stats were below average, but he seemed to slump all year and that might have affected both sides of the field. Not sure which side is the outlier (since he wasn’t reported to be much of a defender when he was in the minors), but there’s enough evidence out there to say that Cano’s defense might be good.

Damon and Matsui are going nowhere.
Trade options are Melky (who’s not a starter right now, so he doesn’t open up an OF spot) and Swisher (whose value is probably lower than it should be). Maybe Melky for a bullpen arm?
Nady, Damon, and Matsui are all gone after 2009, so holding onto Swisher and Gardner isn’t a bad move, even if they don’t get as much playing time as they’d hope this year. I could see Nady playing his way out of a starting spot in favor of Gardner, too.

$21MM per year for Tex is pretty good.
In a previous off-season, he might have gotten more like $25MM. And while 8 years is a little much, some were bracing for 9 or 10 years. I don’t think this hurts the Rays’ chances of getting a good deal on a DH.

That's why the thought of Lowe in NY made me laugh
He’d kill Jeter and Cano
by Erik Hahmann on Dec 23, 2008 4:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Said this before
but Wang – GB pitcher at the level of Lowe – hasn’t exactly struggled in NY.
Extraordinary GB pitchers get lots of easy GB’s. Jeter and Cano are hardly the best MIF combo, and Cano tends to gork the occassional routine play, but high GB pitchers give their IF lots of routine plays. Not every ball gets hit to the holes. And Jeter does make routine plays – messing those up almost invariably become errors. He had 4 less errors in 50 more chances than Bartlett. Sure his range is less than desirable, but when he moves I’d expect it to be to OF, not 1B. And NY has been very focused on middle IF’s in their last few drafts, signing multiple HS SS that were signability picks.
I know it’s frustrating for you all that NY is in the financial position to pull such moves, but this is a much improved team overall now. Last year’s big deficit – reliable starting pitching – has been addressed, assuming the adds stay healthy. But as I’ve said here before, pitching injuries can be unpredictable. Look at the Jays – it was 2 of their young guys that got hurt.
And Teixeira fills a long term system hole that NY has insufficiently addressed through the draft and developement system. To my mind Tex made much more sense as an acquisition than Burnett – I would’ve gone with a shorter term, cheaper committment for a 2nd added starter since most of NY’s minors strength is in pitching. I expect they’ll still try to add Pettitte, and let Hughes be the first fill in or to take some reps for an innings limited Joba.

by P Brady on Dec 23, 2008 5:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And I recognize the error thing is largely meaningless
Barlett had somewhat more chances per inning on a high K, not GB skewed staff, which speaks to his range advantage.
Both teams were high in K/IP – NY has seemingly improved there. It will be interesting to see how Burnett works out there – he is GB oriented, so IF D could have a big impact on his performance.

I haven't been on here for a while
but we all saw this coming when they missed the playoffs w/ a $200 million payroll last year.
It’ll be really funny to watch them finish third again even with Sabathia/Burnett/Teixeira/etc.

Wasn't my point
My point was that the Yankees missed the playoffs and finished behind BOTH us and the Sawx. We knew there would be hell to pay from the NYY.

Good thing this isn't the NFL, 161 games means you can be patient.
And this is the exact reason the RFO wants Season Ticket sales, much more stable and predictable income.

Projected wOBA and FIP (average of Marcel & James courtesy of Fangraphs.com)
The last number are averages. If anyone cares to add defense to this I will e-mail you the book.
Teixeira 0.399 Pena 0.383
Cano 0.343 Iwamura 0.334
Jeter 0.357 Bartlett 0.319
Rodriguez 0.405 Longoria 0.376
Posada 0.367 Navarro 0.329
Damon 0.344 Crawford 0.341
Swisher 0.351 Upton 0.365
Nady 0.350 Joyce 0.356
Matsui 0.356 Burrell 0.375
0.363 0.353
Sabathia 3.35 Kazmir 3.80
Wang 3.90 Shields 3.79
Burnett 3.77 Garza 3.93
Pettitte 3.82 Sonnanstine 3.99
Chamberlain Price
3.71 3.88
Chamberlain and Price are looked at as relief options in the projections assume they are both sub-4.00 FIP.
We match up pretty well and this does not take into account defensive advantages at possibly every single position
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

So sub in whoever you want and do the math. We are not far behind them in this rudimentary look
add in defense and we are probably still a better team at this point. I’m not sure if you realize just how damn good we were last year and now we should have a healthy Kaz and Beej, plus a DH/RF upgrade. Oh yeah and D. Price.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

are the just wanting him to rest or was there any thought of going under the knife? Is there other examples of pitchers who “just rested” and returned the next year fully healthy?

But defense isn’t all that matters. Trading 50 runs of defensive production for 100 runs of offensively production is a no-brainer, especially with high-K starters (not Wang, obviously).

Joel Sherman says the Yankees made this decision with the 2010 season in mind, given the weak free agent market. He says they’ll now attempt to trade one of Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Xavier Nady, and Nick Swisher.

Damon/Matsui/Nady as a one year rental
Someone will bite, especially if the Yankees pick up some of the salary. I just hope the Yankees aren’t expecting anything of value in return.
by Vin on Dec 23, 2008 4:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Damon isn't going anywhere.
He’s a decent lead off hitter and sets the table nicely for the power bats.
by floridaroar on Dec 23, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Why wouldn't they get something of value in return?
I agree it’s unlikely Damon would go, and Matsui has the least trade value, so likely Nady is the guy. Swisher could be moved again as well, since he’s signed for a few years at reasonable rates, so someone likely values him.
Nady’s arb 3 off a $3.35 MM salary, can also play 1B. I’d expect them to try moving him first – FA after ‘09. They’d probably perfer to move Matsui, but won’t get any value until the spring if he can possibly play the OF.

Nadyās arb 3 off a $3.35 MM salary, can also play 1B
So he’s a 1B/OF/DH type?
There’s way too many of those on the open market for the Yankees to expect anything of value for any of those guys except Swisher, who is the only one signed for beyond next season.

by BossmanJunior333 on Dec 23, 2008 5:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Relax
I think it is true that anyone saying the Yankees are not much improved in offense, defense and pitching is whistling in the wind. They are a better team than they were last year, and most certainly better than they looked to be at the start of the off-season. But they are not shoo-ins for anything. It will be interesting to see what the various projections forecast, but let’s keep a few things in mind:
1: Offense: In essence they have replaced Giambi/Abreu with Teixeira/Swisher. They also will have Posada and Matsui back, which should help if only because their catchers last year were so awful and Matsui is probably better than last year’s non-Giambi DH. But it is not as if they have simply added Teixeira; he & Swisher replace two productive hitters.
2: Defense: Teixeira is a huge upgrade over Giambi and Swisher, if he plays RF, probably is better than Abreu. It is possible this is the most important improvement the Yankees have made even if it is not in the most crucial positions.
3: Pitching: Again, Sabathia is one of the best pitchers in the majors, but also again, he and Burnett replace Mussina and, at least for the moment, Pettitte. While Pettitte was only near league average, Mussina was significantly better and so it is not addition but replacement. I think the new starters are better than those they replace, but it is not as if you replace Jason Hammel with Sabathia.
While there is good reason to expect the Yankees to have problems due to injury and age-related declines, it is silly to discount the improvements they have made over the 89 win team they were last year. But it is equally silly to assume they are buying a pennant; they are doing the right thing. They are leveraging their financial clout (and probably their name recognition) to improve, just as the Rays have been leveraging their high draft picks and creative management to improve.
I also wonder how many draft choices the Yankees will lose in 2009. As strong as their farm system is, I remain unimpressed with the upside I see there, and think the loss of too many draft choices is another cost of the signings. And a cost that may keep the Yankees from maintaining their improvement over more than a year or so.
