Manny a Ray - a "Manny Ray"
I have a pretty good feeling on the baseball market and I correctly predicted today to my friend that the Yankees would sign Tex. I knew they would before the offseason started because they had more money coming off the books than anyone could possibly offer, and why not take the top three FA's (literally!!) available. Anyway, I have one more prediction to make, as stupid as it may sound - I think the Rays sign Manny on a two-year record deal in the range of two years, 60 mil. Manny could be our everyday DH and would obviously provide an insane right handed bat. Friedman is known to be "opportunistic" and the only other players in the race for Manny right now are the Dodgers, the Nats/Orioles, and maybe the Yankees, Angels, and Mets. If Friedman and Sternberg can swoop in and make Manny an offer he can't refuse (like being the highest paid player in the world, ever), he may just bite. He would still get a chance to stick it to the Sox, the move would put the Rays lineup at (projected OPS):
- Iwamura (.330)
- Crawford (.335)
- Upton (.358)
- Pena (.383)
- Ramirez (.389)
- Longoria (.366)
- Joyce (.354)
- Navarro (.319)
- Bartlett (.315)
Notice how it goes L-R-L-R-L-R-L-S-R, as Joe has stated he likes it : - P. Then take a look at the Marcels OPS projections. What a starting lineup!
Now here is my opening day 25-man prediction while we're on the subject:
Starting IF:
1B Carlos Pena
2B Akinori Iwamura
3B Evan Longoria
SS Jason Bartlett
Starting Catcher:
C Dioner Navarro
Starting Outfield:
LF Carl Crawford
CF BJ Upton
RF Matt Joyce
Starting DH:
OF Manny Ramirez
Starting Pitchers:
- James Shields
- Scott Kazmir
- Matt Garza
- David Price
- Andy Sonnanstine
Relief Pitchers:
LR: Jeff Niemann
MR: JP Howell
MR: Chad Bradford
MR: Derek Rodriguez
MR: Troy Percival (probably a trade here)
SU: Dan Wheeler
CL: Grant Balfour
Bench
IF Willy Aybar
IF Ben Zobrist
OF Gabe Gross
OF Fernando Perez
Backup Catcher
C Shawn Riggans

If Andre Friedman signs Manny Ramirez for $30mm a year I take back every good thing I have ever said about him because he's clearly the luckiest SOB on the face of the planet.
That would be the stupidest thing in the history of the entire world.
adding ramirez
instantly would turn our lineup from decent to excellent because honestly pat burrell is bound to decline and the other FA’s are pretty much all left handed. in that starting lineup, we see 4 true power hitters in Evan, Carlos, Manny, and BJ. We have 4 20+ SB threats in Carl, BJ, Matt Joyce, and Jason Bartlett. We have 4 probable 300 hitters in Carl, BJ, Manny, and Evan. We have plus defense at every position. Here’s a look at my conservative projections for their OPS and HR numbers (just to show you what kind of improvement we’re talking about)
Aki – .730 / 6
Carl – .808 / 15
BJ – .895 / 31
Pena – .850 / 33
Manny – .902 / 35
Evan – .910 / 38
Joyce – .760 / 18
Navarro – .720 / 3
Bartlett – .715 / 3
By my count, that would be a total of 182 HR’s just from our starters!!!
Pat Burrell is bound to decline but Manny isn't?
Also, your projections are in no way conservative.
Look, being really generous, Manny is a 4 win player as a DH. You’re advocating playing him 30% more than his absolute-best-case market value. $30mm is nearly 70% of 2008’s opening day payroll. There’s just absolutely no way this happens, and if it did it would be incredibly dumb.

A few more flaws
First off, while offering 30 million dollars seem opportunistic, there is no way on earth he gets that much money nor is he worth that much. Even on a one or two year contract, is likely close in value to Tex offensively over those two seasons and offers no defensive value, only loses value.
While I would drool over a line up with Ramirez in the middle, its just not plausible simply for financial reasons. Even if he signed for 20 millions, that is twice our budget (including trading one of Bradford/Wheeler). Even Dunn or Bradley might be out of our price range.
Lastly, Percival will likely not be traded unless its a pure salary dump. Even then unlikely. If healthy, he is our closer. Not Balfour.
Signing a Bradley/Dunn/Burrell/Abreu/Giambi and a Nelson/Ohman is the best case scenerio.

Wont happen
I’m sure we would sign him if his price tag drops a decent bit. Heck I wouldn’t be surprised if it does drop that much. The problem is while we would be willing to jump in at that type of discount but so would other teams. The Yankees wouldn’t let the Rays sign an extremely discounted ManRam.
And by extremely discounted I mean far lower than 2 at 30
What can the Yanks do?
I don’t think they can sign anymore Type A free agents

Maybe not the Yanks
But if Manny’s price tag drops that far, expect a team like the Angels to scoop him up first.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Yankees finally don't have a spot for him
Angels dont want him, Mets and Dodgers don’t give into his crazy demands so his demands will drop but that I just can’t see it. As bad as I want to, I can’t see a headline reading “Rays land Manny” although it would be a “piss off” to the Yankees and their money. And man, he would KILL the Red Sox.

More like 2 years 30 million. I say sign Bonds or Sosa to low end contracts now

To be honest
I am sure they know it is extremely unlikely but you gotta think Silverman and Friedman are sitting in their offices right now thinking “god damn Yankees, we should sign Manny and shut them up” but will still wind up signing one of the DH’s we keep hearing about and a reliever.
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
Screw Manny, sign Bonds
1. Cheaper.
2. Has shit to prove.
3. Can mash like none other.
4. 1 year deal.
"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."
Somehow Manny is ok for PR but Bonds isn't.
I’ve understood why teams don’t sign Bonds. I just can’t justify signing Manny and not signing Bonds.
I can't wrap my head around why teams don't sign Bonds.
There. Are. So. Many. Active. MLB. Players. In. That. Mitchell. Report. It’s. Not. Even. Funny.
"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."
Bonds has a reputation as being a poor teammate.
Since all of those ex-teammates like Jeff Kent and uh….hm, that one guy maybe said he was a bad guy because he had a recliner. Percival gets his own water machine and gets to tell at the manager on the mound, but he’s a good teammate so who cares.

I know about the "reputation," but its just moronic in my eyes.
Other players with reputations get contracts/traded for/etc. And they’re not nearly as good as Bonds.
And anything Jeff Kent says is irrelevant anyway.
"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."
And when he's convicted in February, we have nothing.
I say stick to Milton Bradley.

don't worry about it
Unless he decides that he only wants 15 mil or less and HAS to play in the AL East, he wont be a Ray.
And no one is giving him 30 mil. Even the Yankees didn’t do that with A-Rod.
I do wonder what Pujols will be signed to when he is a FA.
Evan Longoria and David Price - the fight for my heart
Can anyone point to any historical evidence that the front office would ever pay $15mil a year for anyone?
That just isn’t happening. I’d love to see Manny DH’ing for us but we gotta be realistic here. It would be fun to see how the Boston crowd reacts to him crushing balls over the Green Monster in a Rays uniform, wouldn’t it?
Regressing to the mean streets of St. Pete
Can you show historical evidence before last year of ...
The Rays winning a pennant.
We are in uncharted waters my friend. We are Rays we are no longer in the Spawning Lagoon. We are in the deep uncharted waters on the edge of the great barrier reef that is the World Series.

I am sure Friedman and Sternberg are salivating.
If the Rays got Manny it would definetely put more butts in the seats something this team still needs. As a former Cleveland Indian fan and I still make googley eyes at them now and then and cheat on the Rays a little lol … I would love to see Manny in a Rays uni. As a matter of fact I said this last year when Boston was trading him. Everyone looked at me like I had 3 heads.
I don’t think it will happen but if Manny really does want a shot at shoving it where the son doesn’t shine for Boston…. He either plays here or NY and I think the Yankees are not offering anymore.
Comeon Manny, take a 1 year deal for $15 mil you know you want too lol …. We all want you to.
The economy will be better next year allowing you to sign an even bigger deal with another club.

Manny
is less cost effective and has more chance for serious regression than Burrel, or even Dunn in my mind. Manny may help bring up ticket sales and publicity so the fucking talking heads can stop blabbering about how we don’t support our team enough.
Manny at 15-18 million is meh when we can get Bradley at 8-10 million. Younger, can actually play the outfield if we need him to (and decently, its just his health that is the issue) as well. Dunn will just get on base more, Giambi is Dunn but with more risk of injury and outright innefectiveness, and Burrell is somewhere in the middle of the two.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but the original topic is suggesting 30 M annually, not 15 M.
That’s quite a difference.
I disagree
He can rake like nobody’s business. 15M for him at DH would be good.

In terms of market value it's a good deal.
I don’t think I’ risk it were I running the show for the Rays.
