The fanpost on which AL East team has the best rotation got me thinking about a similar fanpost I posted early on in the 2008 season. Early on in the season when Kaz was on the DL and Shields was being dominant in his stead, I posed the argument that Shields had potentially passed Kaz as our #1 starter. There was a lengthy argument in a fanpost and after Kaz came back, he seemed to settle the dispute by going on a ridiculous tear. However, with how this whole season finished up, I feel like the question is still up for debate. Who do you guys think should be our Opening Day starter in 2009?
I feel like most people are simply penciling Kaz in at our #1 spot because he's been in that spot for quite a few years now. In a lot of ways, though, I think Shields makes more sense because he's less of an injury risk, is more consistent, yet still has the ability to pitch an absolutely dominant game. There were a heck of a lot of question marks about Kaz at the end of the year, so I feel like until he shows that he's healthy, throwing his slider like normal, and can consistently go deep into the game, he shouldn't be put in our #1 slot.
