Red Sox Might Go After Dunn, Burrell

Providence Journal

With all of the premier free agents gone — except Manny Ramirez, who isn’t in the Sox’ plans — the Red Sox could turn their attention to the second tier. There are big bats available for cheap if Boston wants another corner outfielder or a part-time designated hitter. Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn are all proven players who haven’t seen much interest so far.

Derek Lowe, also in Boras’ stable, is also a possibility, and Rhode Island’s Rocco Baldelli is still on the radar as a fourth outfielder and a right-handed bat off the bench.

They can have Rocco. Leave Burrell alone.

I want Baldelli, always had a mancrush on his swing

Don’t think the Sox will sign him if he can play everyday.

Mother---- him and John Wayne!

So if this is true are you guys getting rid of Sloppy?

bc I would think dunn/burrell in LF is not exactly ideal.

Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

Sloppy?

You mean Papi? No, we’re not getting rid of him, and the Red Sox won’t sign Burrell or Dunn.

What did I say?

If you’re looking at Baldelli I would think he falls in the same category as Dunn/Burrell (DH) unless you want a knock-kneed fawn out there that could fall down at any moment. You’re better off with Sloppy as your DH.

Baldelly would be our 4th OFer, since he can't play everyday

But if he CAN play everyday, he won’t sign with the Red Sox.

Theo isn't stupid.

He knows that Dunn/Burrell are not improvements over Lowell when factoring in defense. And, since Ortiz has the DH spot on lockdown…

Yeah…pure posturization to drive the price up for the Rays.

Red Sox are so annoying

I doubt there is any truth to this but they have to go and drive up the price for us.

On the bright side, I guess the finally see us as threats like the Yankees

There is NO truth to this

The Red Sox can’t offer any of those guys the playing time they want/will get elsewhere. Baldelli is the only realistic option for them, and that’s if he is still only considered a 4th OFer option. Or else someone else will give him starter PT/money

Lowe would make sense, only if they arent going to sign Brad Penny

The defensive gain/loss

So, I went to see how Youks translates to 3B, and I was surprised to find that he rates a very good defensive 3B. Assuming the loss from Lowell to Youks is minimal defensively (which the data seems to support but I am skeptical of), what is the loss from Youks to Dunn/Burrell at 1B? Is it safe to assume that both would be below average? I would think so. Youks rates somewhere between +5 and +10, so they could lose anywhere from 1 to 1.5 wins in the field. Both are worth about 2.5 wins at the plate, and Lowell is somewhere around .5 wins. So, the net gain would seem to be about .5-1 win. It would seem foolish to sit Lowell’s money on the bench or eat it in a trade and pay Dunn/Burrell at least 8-10 mill for one net win.

I didn't think about that

but I need to hear from atleast one reliable place that either of those 2 will play 1B or that anyone is talking contracts with their agents to play them there

That would certainly make more sense though

That makes no sense

They have too much respect for Lowell to do a thing like that without needing it.

like i said

there is no place for them on the Red Sox unless they play 1B, so if that isnt a possibility (which I didnt think it was initially) then this rumor makes no sense
