New Year's Eve Open Thread
This is the first of many off-season open threads. In them we discuss whatever we want: whether it be the latest news and rumors in baseball or Selgy's feelings about the sobriety of the blogosphere. I will normally start it off with an interesting baseball factitude, but in honor of this exciting holiday I'll offer a New Year's Eve themed fun fact:
The famed New Year's Eve in Times Square (pictured below) is a grand tradition most well-known for the large ball that drops to bring in the new year. This tradition began in 1907 and has been carried out every year but 1942 and 1943 (due to wartime lights "dimouts").
So, what does everyone see in the upcoming year for our favorite team? Anyone have any grand plans for the evening?

2004 – After the Devil Rays decline his 2005 $8 million contract option, Free agent first baseman Tino Martinez, who hit .262 with 23 home runs and 76 RBI for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, signs a one-year, $3 million contract to rejoin the New York Yankees. Martinez played in New York from 1996 through 2001 and was replaced by Jason Giambi. This time, he is acquired as insurance in the event Giambi’s fragile health due to steroid use continues to fail.

I will predict Pat Burrell becomes a Ray in '09
1- He and his family live in a trendy N.Pinellas sub-division and i think that will play a huge part
2- He has only known Florida as his ST home (i saw his 1st game as a Clearwater Phillie)
3- He fits their needs the most, a RH bat who kills LHP

I've seen his locker in the Wentworth CC and ran into him at a Varsity Club.
He’s a nice guy so I didn’t take his golf shoes…

And I blame the Rockies for bailing the Cubs out some!
I guess if all the rumors are BS then I still want Bradley but Dunn and Burrell are both awesome also.

Question/Prediction/Whatever
First off, I know we aren’t like most teams but I want to say this anyway. Whenever a team gets a new stadium, they usually bring a high priced free agent with it.
The only one left is Manny and he wouldn’t still be around whenever we get the stadium so here comes the part where we are different.
Do you think, if we get confirmation that a stadium is being built, we will give Upton basically a blank check? Try to sign him to like 9 or 10 years for who knows how much.

I would do it
I am thinking of other small market teams
Hell, the smallest of them all, the Marlins, gave Hanley Ramirez a long term deal when they finally got their stadium confirmed

It would have to be more
Think 10 years 150M at least and I would do this in a heartbeat, then again I’ve never had a million dollars so yeah
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

What are your feelings on Pol Pot and Slobodan Milosevich
These are my 2 favorite genociders because I got both their rookie cards in a single box of Raisin Bran. That was a good day.

I have one too and lately its done nothing but fight me.
I wanted to pitch it out the window of my plane coming home for break. It froze and I didn’t think I had anything to poke the reset button with. Turns out that one of the bar bells I have in the upper part of my ear works just fine.
If you want results, press the red button. The rest are useless.

Ok....hold on
In his blog, Levine suggests a DeRosa match with Cleveland but does not say a deal is close. Levine considers the Cubs’ Milton Bradley signing “a done deal” and says they’ve back in the mix for Jake Peavy.
First they need to trade Marquis to get Bradley, now they are going for Peavy AND Bradley?
I have to go back to not believing anything until it’s official.

Derosa did get flipped today.
Brendan, NY: Any idea what the Cubs may or may not be doing with these pitchers they just got from Cleveland for DeRosa?
Jim Callis: (2:10 PM ET ) The Cubs just flipped DeRosa for Jeff Stevens, John Gaub and Chris Archer. This looks like the prelude to another deal, possibly for Jake Peavy. They’re on the verge of dealing Jason Marquis to the Rockies, clearing his salary, something else they wanted to do before getting Peavy. My guess is some or all of those pitchers go to San Diego with Josh Vitters and others (Kevin Hart?) for Peavy. They’re about to sign (it may be official) Aaron Miles to fill in at second base, too.

I think it is pretty interesting
that the Vick brothers grew up in Virginia as did the Upton brothers. BJ and Justin are model citizens that quietly play hard and keep their noses clean. They’re parents are respected members of the community. I do not know much about Vick’s parents, but I think the legal troubles are pretty well documented for the sons. They grew up probably 45 mins from each other and on one side you have a couple of intelligent guys that work hard and on the other you have a couple of flashy, trash talkers that think they are hot shit. We’ll see in about 15 years who ends up with hundreds of millions of dollars and who is working at Piggly Wiggly.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.
