What Definition of "Play" Are We Using?
Topkin's Sunday offering has a few notes on announcers, the pitchers, and a ton of options for the Rays. This one stands out:
Sign Raul Ibanez
Age: 36
'08 numbers: .293, 23, 110, $5.5M w/Mariners
Plus/minus: Good for about 100 RBIs each season, can play outfield or DH, good clubhouse presence; may attract considerable interest.
Emphasis mine, pleasure of posting this is also mine:
via LookoutLanding
So, play as in "run around" it is.

He looks like a little kid running on the playground.

Keeps the clubhouse loose
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Ibanez would own the crap out of throwing baseballs through giant Dr. Pepper cans.

The baseballs would have to hit the ground, then go through the giant cans like a dart.

I made the pact weeks ago that before I took each of my finals
I’d look at one of the Raul gifs. It takes all of 10 seconds, and its fucking hilarious. LL is pure win for giffing that stuff.

My favorite from LL

Adopted Giant: Aaron King
Wearing the crown by 2011. Or at least the LOOGY hat

Everytime I watch that
I want badly to see the rest of the play with commentary.

I'm curious who fetched the ball.

My guess is the center fielder.

stopped reading after he discussed trading for delmon young as an option

I don't think you should have.
It is unlikely. But the article is simply speculating on possibilities, not probabilities or recommendations. Given Friedman’s statements, and his history, and as the headline indicates, and the sub-headline emphasizes, the options are varied and numerous. There are rumors that the Twins are ready to move Delmon, and while TB seems the least likely destination, it isn’t entirely out of the question.
If I were writing the article, I would have speculated even more wildly that the Rays could seek a trade for Edwin Encarnacion or Richie Weeks and try one out either in RF or as a DH. Actually, my favorite Rays’ trade fantasy is one involving Kazmir and Justin Upton as the centerpieces. Now there you have some really improbable thoughts, but kind of fun to consider anyway. The ones Topkin are suggesting are more responsible.
I do think he should have made clear that Ibanez’s “minus” includes his fielding, but the fact is that “can play” the outfield here simply means that is what he has been doing. And teams have been known to get by with poor corner outfield defense, although I doubt the Rays would accept that option.

Weeks in the OF
Interesting thought if the Brewers are looking to sell low. He’s been terrible defensively at 2B and disappointing with the bat in large part to wrist and other injuries, but his approach at the plate is similar to Upton and he’s pretty good on the bases. Why couldn’t he be at least as valuable as fellow Southern University alum Fred Lewis in the outfield?

From nearly everything I have read he is an awful fielder
and I have read some of the really hilarious stuff at Lookout Landing. But to be fair, using a few specific examples of gaffes, no matter how awful they are, and even if the few is expanded to a few dozen, is not entirely fair. They are, after all, purely anecdotal, and may illustrate the legitimate point that he is awful, but they do not make that point. After all, one could compile a collage of hilarious plays from the greatest fielders.

Very true.
I should include that statistically Ibanez is an awful fielder.

As someone who has had the pleasure of watching Raul "play" the outfield 10-12 times over the past couple years.....
I can say that, without a doubt, he is a terrible fielder. He has zero range, his arm is decent-to-below-average, and you can see he has trouble tracking the path of the ball.

The GIF in the topic
Isn’t just a “wow, that’s funny” GIF. It demonstrates Raul’s lack of range. These types of plays will not be funny to fans of whichever team signs him, particularly fans of a contending team.

Also, Jeff and JI never would have thought to GIF these things if Raul wasn't consistently awful.
This is the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Shockingly
I forget when this was, but I was watching a Yankees-Royals game some years back and I remember a game where Raul hauled back 2HR’s.

Regarding another part...
good clubhouse presence;
That is BS and we all know it. Clubhouse presence is not as important as people think.

If by "presence", you mean "taking up space", I think it's important.
I’d like all players to take up some kind of space in the locker room. Unless….GHOST FIELDERS!

Apparantly Raul has 11 potential suitors.
Some will drop out though.

I'm not too excited about a multi-year deal + giving up our first rounder for Raul.
by R.J. Anderson on Dec 7, 2008 11:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not either. Hence the "some will drop out" part
And, I have a preference that Raul goes somewhere where he can play OF.
