Milton Bradley Meets with Rays
Free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley arrived at the winter meetings on Monday and promptly went to lunch with his agents and officials from the American League champion Tampa Bay Rays.
It's not often (ever?) that one of the best free agents available meets first with the Rays. Not only does this suggest the Rays are interested, but that they've had previous dialogue with Bradley and his reps over the past few weeks. This also suggests Bradley's camp is at least a bit interested in playing for the Rays.
Reaction:
“We have a tremendous amount of respect for Milton as a player and felt it was a good opportunity to sit down and learn a little bit more,” Friedman said. “It was a great meeting.”
Friedman also said the team was "unlikely" to sign anyone during the meetings and that they had a few other meetings planned. The Rays on the attack.

It really is so awesome
Cuz it means 1 of 2 things
1) He wanted a free lunch and the Rays felt generous
2) Both parties are interested
I'd fix Milton lunch everyday if he signs here.

Ken Griffey Jr. is probably disguised as the waiter
and poisoning Milton Bradley’s food. 1 down (Giambi, Ibanez, Burrell) to go.

Rays interested in Rivera.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2008/12/juan-to-get.html
I’m not crazily a fan of Rivera, simply b/c of his injury history.
Dude. This.
Yeah, I'm torn on Rivera too.
On one hand: cheap, power.
On the other hand: not a good fielder, injuries, is he really that much better than Gomes?

He kinda looks like Popeye with that one eye closed and biceps bulging
What’s really funny is that the guys on the bench are not surprised one bit.
Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn't have to give up that much.

That really is the best part.

Is that Ceasr Izturis, Hideo Nomo, and Alex Cora in the background anyways?

Both or either or?
4:44pm: Mike DiGiovanna says the Rays are also believed to be interested in Juan Rivera.
if its 1 of them, Milton plz
Nice to know that both parties are interested.
Maybe something like 3/24 with performance/health incentives?
too good to be true?
NO!
Andrew Friedman can make it so good AND true.
And after, we can see that Rhino guy or whoever RJ was talking up a lot.
Im sure Bradley enjoyed himself
Ive seen and talked with freidman and silverman when they were out at 3 am at McDintons in Tampa. They seem like really fun easy going guys and while we were all drunk, we managed to talk some baseball and it was really cool.

How about
Bradley 3/27 and Jackson to the Mets for Nick Evan?

Fuck you, Jim Hendry.
Cubs met with Bradley last night.
YES Raul Ibanez can play RF in Wrigley. Now hurry up and sign him and leave Bradley alone.
Dude. This.
In Regard to Friedmans comments
I have a feeling they will make moves to solidfy the right field spot and bullpen (possibly this week) before they address signing one of the DHs. It might give them a better idea what money they have to work with before they make a big financial commitment. Plus by then some of the DH canidates (hopefully not Bradley) will have been signed and the remaining players will be under more pressure to sign whatever deal the Rays offer.

Bullpen should be last priority, not first.
The reliever market is really deep, and the pen is the easiest hole to fill very cheaply.
Dude. This.
Mcgee/Niemman/Talbot.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
McGee is not even an option this season.
He won’t pitch competitively until June at the earliest.
Tools Whore
Sign Bonds!
Did not intend it to be. Although he could conceievably relieve price style left

Perhaps, but very unlikely.
His command of his offspeed stuff was sub-par before TJ. He’s not going to get it back in 3 months I wouldn’t imagine. This year will be a success regardless of what kind of numbers he puts up if he can remain healthy and regain his velocity.

Sign Bonds!
According to reports
Giambi says that expects to sign with the A’s. Although it has been noted, that Giambi is not very high on the A’s list of priorities.

To cheer you up after the Giambi news
Ken Rosenthal spoke to a Rangers official who expects Milton Bradley to move on (at least they’ll snag a supplemental pick). This official believes the Rays and, surprisingly, the Royals are the leading suitors for Bradley.
Yes, I know the Royals can be dumb but no way in hell they can actually want another DH type who can occasionally play the OF. I am feeling good about this.
Why in the hell would the Royals need Bradley?
by R.J. Anderson on Dec 8, 2008 10:13 PM EST up reply actions
Well, besides it making zero sense, on the flip side
If the Royals get Bradley, then Billy Butler is 100% available. As is Shealy, Gload, et all.
And, no offense to Milton and his awesomeness, but I’d rather have Billy Butler.
Dude. This.
I have less than zero interest in Gload
and Royals is probably a false rumor. I am worried that the Cubs will jump back into this, not like they value defense.
Or Raul goes to the Mets.
with Bradley going to the Cubbies. Sorry to be a downer.
Remember, the Cubs have payroll issues, and Bradley will be cheaper than Raul.
Damn, winter meetings are addicting. Too addicting.

Maddon and Friedman liking him makes me feel better yet again
Maddon came away impressed by Bradley, who has a history of erratic behavior but is coming off a career year with the Texas Rangers. He batted .321 with 22 home runs and 77 RBIs, and made the All-Star team.
"He was very honest, open and intense. I liked all three," Maddon said. "The thing about him that always stands out is that this guy to me works an at-bat as well as anybody in either league. I’ve never seen him throw an at-bat away. Never. I don’t care what the score is, inning is, whatever, he’s the same quality at-bat every time up."
Or, do they have leverage?
Hopefully Maddon has some sway power over Friedman.
Like Ozzie Guillen and getting rid of his non-favorites (Swisher, Vazquez, Boone Logan, etc.).
Dude. This.
:)
The Royals are looking at free agents Russ Springer, Kyle Farnsworth and Brandon Lyon, but they may not have the money for any of them.
Barring a Jose Guillen trade, Milton Bradley makes especially little sense right about now. The current payroll already projects to roughly $70 million, which GM Dayton Moore previously acknowledged as the likely maximum. “There’s flexibility with our payroll,” GM Dayton Moore argued, “although it’s decreasing. The bottom line is we have to be aggressive in adding some bullpen arms. We have to do that. It’s very important.”
No one is taking Jose Guillen, I wont be happy until he is in our jersey but this keeps looking better and better
One of the best quotes in a long, long time..
“If that’s one of my worst mistakes — to sign somebody who has 20 home runs and 97 RBIs — I’ll take it.”
- Dayton Moore on Jose Guillen
But I will be impressed if he manages to dump him and not eat most of his contract.
