Winter Meetings Day Two Open Thread
What we learned from day one:
- The Rays might have a crush on Milton Bradley, take him to lunch. Ken Rosenthal says the Rays are the favorites to sign him, meanwhile the Rays don't seem to think they'll sign anyone during the meetings.
- The Rays have meet and greets planned with a few other free agents.
- Ken Griffey Jr. "would be thrilled" to play with Tampa Bay. Rays reaction:
- Rocco Baldelli is apparently going to Boston.
- The Rays signed Paul Phillips: looks like minor league filler.
- Orvella removed from the 40 man roster.

he can be our Rocco 09.
ask him if he wants to play for the minimum. if nothing else he can mentor BOSSMAN and prepare him for upcoming superstardom like nobody else can. you know, tell him how to cash in on endorsements, etc.

Bradley has a lot to do with Hermida
When we sign Bradley, we either don’t sign Rocco (which I still can’t believe) or don’t get another RF (Hermida, Willingham, Kearns, …) as our roster is set (and Rocco (if healthy enough), Zobrist or (hopefully) Aybar could platoon with Gross in RF) and we wouldn’t even need another RF!

Updates from Topkin
Bunch of good stuff this morning
He sounds like a cheap date
Milton Bradley had pizza and French onion soup for lunch Monday at the Bellagio.
Maddon describes Bradley
“Honest, open and intense,” manager Joe Maddon said. “And I liked all three.” “People grow up, people change,” Maddon said. “A lot of it, from what I gather just talking to him today, is that this guy is really all about winning.”
In more excellent news
The Rays’ efforts to improve their offense moved to the next stage when they met with the first of several free agents under consideration, with Jason Giambi believed to be next.
Maddon said closer Troy Percival was recovering well from back surgery but may not be ready at the start of the regular season
And if the Rays do sign someone to be primarily the DH, Maddon at this point would look to a platoon of Gabe Gross and Fernando Perez in rightfield.
by Tommy Rancel on Dec 9, 2008 8:09 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Two things:
One, we will sign someone just to DH full time. That’s pretty much a lock to happen.
Two, I’m inclined to believe that Milton Bradley would be our full-time RFer if we sign him.
Tools Whore
Sign Bonds!
by Tyler on Dec 9, 2008 8:18 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Wha?
Why would Milton Bradley be our full-time RFer? Then what do we do with Gross, Nando, and the DH spot? That makes no sense to me. If (hopefully when) we get Bradley, especially with his injury concerns, I want him to stay on the basepaths.
I could be wrong though
by staplemaniac on Dec 9, 2008 3:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It makes more sense to have Aybar DHing than to have a Gross/Nando platoon
But with Milton’s injury history and the Trop’s turf, I wouldn’t want him playing outfield more than once a month or so.

I agree.
Given who would play RF in a platoon, they would field just as well as Bradley, so there’s no reason to risk playing Bradley in the field.
Maybe Bradley wants to play the field and not just DH?

Add Rick Ankiel to the list
The Cardinals have been surprised at the level of interest in center fielder Rick Ankiel. The New York Yankees have been among at least five teams looking into obtaining Ankiel. The Braves, Rays and Giants are among the others.

What is the cost of Ankiel this year? Trading Jackson and Wheeler/Bradford loosens up the purse strings by 5 mil or so, perhaps allowing the Rays to take a closer look at the deflating cost of the reliever market?

the two first round picks would be nice
That has to be a major incentive to go forward with this trade…clear some salary among relievers, E-Jax already is arb-eligible…the Rays do not lose much on this one year deal that also allows them to bolster their minor league system in a year
by raysfaninminnesota on Dec 9, 2008 10:08 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Also from that article
He is one year removed from free agency and as a Scott Boras client almost certainly will test the market. However, he should make only about $3 million as an arbitration-eligible player in 2009.

Unless Ankiel pulls a Pena
I doubt he’d want to stay that bad, but a 3 yr, 24 mil contract like Pena would be very nice…but I’d definitely be fine with a one and done.

It’s based on dumb stuff like HRs, RBIs, AVG, etc with CFs lumped in with LF/RF/1B and no considering for fielding.

From Olney's Blog Today
But the basic situation will probably remain the same — there are more sluggers available than teams who are looking for said sluggers. This is part of the reason why the American League champion Rays are in an excellent position to add a good hitter to the middle of their batting order. They’ll probably add someone who gets on base a lot and hits for power, and Joe Maddon can drop him right in the midst of Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton and Carlos Pena — and make their solid attack even better.
The Rays are not going to get their pick of the litter, because their offer will be limited by the limits of their payroll. If the Cubs decide they want Abreu and they’re willing to give him a good-sized multi-year deal, there’s nothing that the Rays can really do about it.
But already some agents are considering the Rays as a great place to drop in a client for a one-year deal, because the chances of thriving and build up some major value for another run at free agency after next season is excellent. Imagine if you are Burrell and you find very little in the way of multi-year offers, in what is generally a cool economic climate. You settle on the reality that you’ll probably have to take a one-year deal, with the idea of re-establishing your market value.
Imagine how good the Rays would look to Burrell. He could serve as a designated hitter and very occasional outfielder, and bat fifth or sixth with a bunch of fast guys who are always filling the bases and running around them in front of you. Burrell or Giambi or Dunn or Anderson — or any of the available sluggers — could envision going to the Rays and driving in 110 runs. At some point, somebody figures to grab that opportunity, and the Rays, who already have a good lineup in place for 2009, will be even better.

by R.J. Anderson on Dec 9, 2008 11:19 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Awesome.
Although I’m of the conviction that if Burrell takes a 1 year deal, it will be with the Phillies. It’s just too perfect (minus the defense part, but you’re going to see a lot of NL teams signing DH-types). Gillick is still calling the shots there. Michael Taylor should be ready in 2010, and with Utley’s bat out of the lineup for probably the beginning of the season in a competitive division, it looks like a no-brainer.

This rumor won't go away
Stuff can change fast at the winter meetings. Contrary to what I reported Monday morning on this very blog, there were indications Monday night that Tampa Bay was still talking to the Twins about a deal that would bring outfielder Delmon Young back to the Rays.
Tampa Bay likely would deal away either Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson. But the trade could also involve a third team, because the Twins aren’t looking to add starting pitching.
With the Twins on the verge of losing out on their pursuit of Casey Blake, Colorado could provide an interesting alternative. The Twins have had interest all winter in acquiring Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins, but haven’t been able to find a package that would motivate the Rockies to move him. But Colorado is looking to add pitching, so the presence of Sonnanstine or Jackson could change the equation.

I don't particularly understand why.
It’s obvious Crawford and Delmon don’t rub well, and after all this talk about the clubhouse we’re just going to reacquire the lesser talented of the two we dealt away?

Definitely worth exploring. I’d love to have Delmon back. He was a league average hitter last year, will be 23 for all of next season. His average went up slightly last year, so did his walk rate. He made more contact, swung at balls out of the strike-zone less often.
Was it a huge leap forward? Absolutely not, but he did get better last season. And I expect him to continue getting better in the future. He has a way higher ceiling offensively than Crawford and if you remember CC during his first 2 seasons, then took a huge leap forward his 3rd.

He's a league average hitter at 22.
That’s pretty good. Especially when he has a ceiling of say, Juan Gonzalez. Well, probably less power and more average. I fully expect him to fall into a .310-.330 range as a hitter over the next 5-9 years. He’s that good. And his arm makes up for some of his defensive short comings. That doesn’t make him even league average, but he’s better than Hinske out there and his offense was pretty close, OPS+ 107 to 102.

Delmon Young isn't going to change.
When you consider that he was a total ass when he was here, that’s one thing. The Rays were an ‘awful’ team and he was a talented prospect who looked ready to get his shot, and when he got here things stayed the same, blah blah blah.
But see, he got traded to a playoff team (I don’t care if it’s technical or not, if your team is playing games after the regular season is over, then you’re a playoff team), and he became worse; and the Twins are ready to bail on him after having enough from one season. There’s no turning back from this, he’s not going to get any ‘better’, not until he reaches free agency and realizes that he ain’t gonna get his millions and he has to sign for a spring-training-invite contract.

Outfielder Jeremy Hermida, drawing interest from the Cubs, Braves, Reds and Rays, remains the Marlin most likely to be traded. However, even on that front, the team is not close to a deal.

why is everyone so high on Hermida
last season .729 OPS as opposed to say Delmon’s .741. Delmon also led in RBI, Runs, Avg, and SB. The only thing Hermida has offensively is HR’s. I don’t know much about Hermida defensively.

guys, i know disregarding some numbers may be difficult for some of you

I think it'll be Burnett, Sheets, and Pettitte
Last cause we loves our legacies – and a guy on a 1 year would be good. Looks like Sheets could go for 2 + option. I’m actually no more concerned injury wise with Sheets (assuming he’s healthy now, which is a question) than with Burnett. So giving Burnett 4 or 5 years scares me. But it could be Lowe instead of Burnett – I’m okay with that if the deal is shorter. Remember, Wang is a groundball guy and has done fine for NY.
It seems Wang is healthy, and Joba will be IP limited, but we’ve got some effective depth – and of course, can always bring Sir Sidney back again!

Just spoke briefly with a Rays official who was mystified about ESPN’s report of a potential three-way deal among the Rays, Rockies and Twins that would bring Delmon Young back to Tampa Bay and send Andy Sonnanstine or Edwin Jackson to Colorado. The Rays haven’t had talks with either team along those lines, apparently.
Also, on the subject of meetings with free agents, the Rays don’t have any in-person sitdowns scheduled for today.

Sabathia tells Yanks no?
It sure must’ve have been a productive discussion, because word is that Sabathia has declined the Yankees’ six-year, $140 million offer. (I must stress that’s unconfirmed, but talk is spreading fast. If true, look for the Yanks to get hyper-aggressive on A.J. Burnett.)

:)
He wants to be a Giant and the Giants want him.
Burnett could very well be a Brave.
They look good to get Lowe, though.

Jeter and Cano up the middle with Lowe pitching.
Lordy lordy lordy. This could be fun.

Rocco Watch
While the Red Sox have interest in Rocco Baldelli, they are wary that he will not be able to play enough to fit their needs for a fourth outfielder since they are expecting to have to rest J.D. Drew frequently.

You mean teams don't want to dump significant salary into a player who has no ability whatsoever to play consistently?
I wish I could find that hand-drawn shocked-face picture, because I would link it here.

He wont get significant salary though.
Phillies, Rays and Yankees want him now?

Well.
With the Boston Red Sox expected to trade Mike Lowell if they sign first baseman Mark Teixeira (Kevin Youkilis would move from first to third), the San Francisco Giants have emerged as an option, since they need a third baseman.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

What is interesting to me about Rocco's case
is that at any moment there could be some sort of…IDK some solution to his illness. So little is known about it (by me) but if they find something that can keep him healthy throughout a whole season, and playing every day, then he’s gonna be a phenomenal player again and someone will have gotten him for a steal.
I could be wrong though

Everyone forgets that Percy was pitching servicable relief until his first DL stint, then everything went down from there.
