Winter Meetings Day Three Open Thread
What we learned on day two:
- The Rays and Jason Giambi met and ate at N9ne Steakhouse.
- Marc Topkin reports the Rays will meet with Bobby Abreu's agent within 24 hours. The suggestion that Abreu might play the outfield for the Rays is terrifying.
- Topkin also reports that Dave Myers has replaced Gary Gaetti as Triple-A hitting coach.
- The interest in Delmon Young is apparently smoke.
- The Rays and Cards conversed.

Lets not forget
The Rays added another Rookie Level team, question is where they’ll play with the Stonecrabs occupying the PC stadium. Naimoli Complex?

The GCL Rays will be playing games in the same stadium as the Stonecrabs, seeing as GCL games are played early on during the day.

Giambi isn't getting any younger
but I’ve always been a big fan of his. Such an amazing batter. I would love having him on the Rays. Him or Bradley and I’d be thrilled. Although I like Bradley being a switch hitter over getting another lefty batter.

For me aquiring either would lead me to ask why. Yes I know that both can post serious power numbers and signing both would fill the void for the DH/RF spot.
With that being said, team chemistry would become a serious issue. I am afraid the negative impact both would have in the clubhouse. My issue is mostly with Bradley though. A couple of those outbursts and temper tanrums could lead to disharmony and really screw with some of the young guys in that locker room. Next thing you know, Bossman is throwing tantrums of his own. I say sign guys who will maintain what we already have, which is a fluid, relatively calm clubhouse.
I say trade for Billy Butler Jeremy Hermida which would seem to fitnicely within the young nucleus we already have.

A Rangers fan posted here a while ago about that incident.
I can’t understand how this occurs:
Bradley was young, had anger problems, hasn’t had an incident in a year-plus. Gets labeled as a problem.
Hamilton was young, had drug problems, hasn’t had an incident in a year-plus. Gets labeled as an idol.

Good point, he hasn't had many, if any off the field issues lately (that the public knows of)....
But I’m talkin in house. You don’t think the first time he tells Maddon to fuck off that a young guy like Upton would follow suit? Just using Upton as an example of course, not saying he’d do anything (see Delmon Young’s antics…he didn’t say much) Bradley is one hell of a talent, I’m just saying why put themselves in a position where you have a free spirit like Giambi or a shit like Bradley can be stink up the locker room?

I know Bradley will flip about as much as I know the next time it will snow in St Pete. All I'm saying is the percentages are there more so of Bradley flying off the handle than either of Butler or Hermida....
And I’m not saying the Rays will sign either. I just think with the makeup of the current club that the Rays should stick with the youth and if they get a vet, be sure he has the veteran leadership of a Cliff Floyd (except he actually produces more and doesn’t get hurt as often).

Why do you think Upton
would be influenced? Why not Kazmir? or Garza? or Iwamura? or Longoria? or Crawford?
Upton proved to be an exceptionally mature young man this year. Through all the criticisms and all the problems he had, he never once threw a public tantrum, never once blamed anyone or anything for his problems. When he was disciplined, he never made an excuse, never tried to shift blame, never tried to downplay his responsibility. In fact, all year he had nothing but praise and gratitude for Maddon, and every player on the Rays who spoke up only had strong words of support for Upton.
And if there is some concern about Bradley, do you think the front office and Maddon are unaware of it? They knew there was concern about Garza’s temperament but risked taking him anyway. And if they do manage to sign Bradley, I am sure it will be after full consideration of the dangers.

I am sure Friedman and the gang are doing their due diligience amd will do what's best for the team. As for Upton, I only used him as an example which I plainly stated. Of course any of the young guys could be influenced. I'm not a Bradley hater....
I just wonder is he the right fit for this team. Whoever they sign, it’ll only be a 1 year deal anyways. So if we do sign Bradley, maybe we will be the stop on his quest to play for every team on MLB

I really don't think Bradley's attitude would be a problem.
For the most part, the players on the Rays have been in the organization for a few years now and know each other. Bradley will be the new guy, with maybe only one other new fielder. He won’t be able to come in and negatively affect the other players’ attitudes. If he stirs shit up, the Rays will point to their recent past of dealing douchebags (see Young, Dukes) and wave bye bye. But I really don’t see that happening, and the Rays aren’t so desperate for a big star, nor is Bradley near a big enough star, that you let their antics disrupt your team.

Milton hasn't stirred up much trouble in the clubhouse.
It’s more external troubles (the announcer, the ump, etc.) than the clubhouse.
Jeff Kent doesn’t count, because he’s an asshole.

Statistics ==/== "math" to some people
I can’t think of the word that distinguishes algebra/calculus from statistics right now, but they’re completely different camps of “math”. And the latter often gets grouped into “math”.
I know quite a few math majors who are driven insane by statistics.

Other than being a 3D animator, I also got a minor in mathematics for fun in college (even though I was an art major). I have always been good at math and am just now starting to really understand all of these crazy baseball stats that a lot of you guys live and breathe. But yeah, stats and algebra are totally different hemispheres of math. Algebra is much more abstract whereas stats is computational.

Interesting.
I think baseball “stats” is very algebraic (in the 8th grade sense, not the college-level sense) and computational, yes. But the field of statistics is about as anti-plug-and-chug as you can get. It’s all about measuring uncertainty and INexactness. There are formulas and rules, sure, but interpretation, experimental design, and throwing out the right/wrong dichotomy are key players of statistics.

Big chip falls....Sabathia to Yankees
CC Sabathia is not going to play on the West Coast. He is not going to play in the National League. CC Sabathia is going to be a Yankee, The Post has learned exclusively.
There are still minor hurdles to finalize, notably that Sabathia must pass a physical. But after so much belief that Sabathia was stalling because he wanted to avoid New York, he agreed to the largest pitching contract in major league history, at least $140 million
We can now expect to face him 4-5 times a year….
7-1, 2.44 ERA in 11 starts vs. Rays.
2-1, 3.77 ERA in 6 starts at the Trop.

IMO this deal is preferrable for us
As opposed to the one that sees them spread that money around 2-3 good to pretty durn good starters. He’s only one guy. He has a chance to get injured. And there’s a better chance that we’d miss him completely during a series. I’d rather face him 4-5 times than 13 starts from good to pretty durn good starters.

Ugh
Reports are 7 years, 160 million. It still looks better than the Zito contract at the time it was signed, but that’s a lot of scratch for a guy with weight problems who’s coming off a year where he put extra stress on his arm. Every big splash free agent signing other than Mussina and maybe Matsui the Yankees have made in the past decade has come back to bite them in the butt at some point (ARod was a trade, so he doesn’t count, but in the past decade their big free agents have been: Giambi, Damon, Pavano, J. Wright, Igawa, Clemens, Tom Gordon, Matsui, Wells, Mussina). I don’t doubt this one would turn out the same way, eventually.

Did you guys not see the ESPN 360 piece on us? Our cheap option will come from inside the system on a platoon. Nando/Ruggiano/Aybar/Zob. Remember who we are, I know that we are all excited about our success, but if we want to maintain that success we have to keep our econmic model in check. I agree that we should look at reasonable DH options in this buyers market. However, only a year or two contract.

In Edwin Jackson and Andy Sonnanstine, Tampa Bay might have exactly what the Cardinals are looking for: starting pitching. The Yankees and three other teams are also thought to have interest in Ankiel, who hit .264 with 25 home runs and 71 RBI in 120 games last season.

Edwin for Ankiel, Sonny for Ludwick.
Which, if either, would you prefer? Ankiel’s signe for one more year, Ludwick for three.

Just because I don’t want to trade Sonny, and I’m not entirely sure Ludwick is any better going forward.

Ludwick's interesting.
He’s had two full seasons in the majors, at +6 and +39 runs compared to average, offensively. Marcel puts him at +19 runs next year. Bil James is at +15. Let’s go with +15 to be conservative.
1.5 WAR offense
-.75 WAR position
-.5 WAR fielding (bUZR)
2 WAR replacement
Total: 2.25 WAR, or just about average for an AL position player. Doesn’t seem worth it, since that’s just about what the RF platoon provided last year. But if he’s +39 runs again and plays like average defense like the Cards fans think he can…

C, not because Bradley is a bad clubhouse guy but because Giambi is a great clubhouse guy
it is widely reported that he works great with young hitters and with potentially
Upton, Longoria, Brignac, Crawford, Navarro, and Ankiel (a little older but young in experience) all potentially starting (if Barty gets moved) we could use a guy like the Giambino

Since the "Bradley is a bad clubhouse guy" is really piss-poor logic
D: Because Giambi tested positive for Steroids.
Hell, Texas would love to have Bradley back, just not at 9M a year with the pitching concerns they have.

OPT OUT CLAUSE :|
10:14am: Tim Brown and Gordon Edes of Yahoo report that the deal is for $161MM over seven years (which would top Johan’s average annual value). The deal has an opt-out clause after the first three years, which are worth $69MM. The 31 year-old Sabathia will make his opt-out decision after the 2011 season with four years, $92MM remaining on the deal.

Back as an option?
According to the New York Daily News, the Mets might not be able to afford Raul Ibanez.
The paper suggests that after signing Francisco Rodriguez and re-inking Oliver Perez, the Mets might call it quits in the free agent market. That’s kind of hard to believe, especially if the crosstown Yankees continue their spending.

hmm I guess Ron Washington doesn't expect Cruz gone
Manager Ron Washington said Tuesday that Nelson Cruz will hit cleanup for the Rangers if they don’t add any offense this winter.
Washington said he wants a right-handed bat behind lefty Josh Hamilton, who will remain third in the order. Cruz went nuts in Triple-A last season, finishing at that level with a .342 batting average, 37 homers and 99 RBI. He was called up in late August and showcased the same kind of power in the majors. Cruz should definitely be on fantasy radars, especially if he’s going to consistently bat behind Hamilton next season.

Hermida might be done.
One of those two trade proposals the Marlins submitted Tuesday was rejected early Wednesday morning by the defending American League champion Rays.
Jeremy Hermida for two top pitching prospects, likely from a group including RHPs Jeff Niemann, Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson and Mitch Talbot.
I wouldn’t be too hesitant to trading one of Davis or Hellboy for Hermida. When you have a surplus, you deal with it. Yes, you WANT to wheel and deal with Sonny and Jackson, but for someone who’s under team control for a long time, Hellickson/Davis might be the price to pay.

the Hermida love needs to be tempered somewhat,
in no way is he even worth Davis or Hellickson straight up. I might go so far as to say he’s not even worth Niemann straight up. once again, fans undervalue our prospects simply b/c we have a surplus.
Hermida = one good season…

Hermida >>> Niemann
And I don’t even like Niemann. If we’re looking only at the next two years, Hermida’s value to the team as currently constructed greatly outweighs Hellickson and Davis’ values to the team.

Juan Salas some love...
BP article on cheap relievers who could have an impact
Juan Salas: Four years ago, Salas was a third baseman with an 80 arm and Joe Shlabotnik’s bat; today, he’s seven years older, and a power reliever who strikes fear into the hearts of International League batters. If not for visa problems and a drug suspension, his mid-90s cutter might’ve made him the third reliever Joe Maddon called upon in Game Five.

Damnit put Snider on the table or throw some money at us for Rios
The Blue Jays are looking at Jason Bartlett as a potential trade target, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
A deal involving Bartlett remains a major long shot, as the Rays aren’t ready to replace him with Reid Brignac yet. The Jays wouldn’t seem to have much to entice them unless the Rays were especially high on Adam Lind. Travis Snider wouldn’t be on the table, and the Rays probably wouldn’t want to take on the contract of Alex Rios.
Lind is certainly a good player though.
