Rays Postseason?

Hopefully this doesn't jinx our playoff hopes this coming season, but I thought I'd just throw this out there:

If you look at the current standings in Spring Training, based off of AL/NL not Cactus and Grapefruit, its definitely a good sign.  If the World Series were to start today, and you chose the best two teams...

Atlanta vs. RAYS...yeaaa

Now I usually am the one to point out the most OBVIOUS ideas when it comes to baseball....but as a Rays fan...thats just a good feeling...

I like your optimism
And I think the difference in playing style you see this spring could lead to an improved position in the standings this regular season for the Rays, but there is no direct correlation at all between ST standings and regular season success.

Re: I like your optimism
Patrick come on, a little confidence man.

"could lead to an improved position in the standings"?

I'm not even a Rays fan, but if they don't improve in the standings (the Orioles?), hell could freeze over. Even I'm not that cautious about their prospects.

I think they'll improve
And I have great confidence that they will, possibly multiple positions forward in the standings, but I've watched this team for too long to believe anything until I see it.

Re: I think they'll improve
For those who are interested in the Rays getting more media attention, Murray Chass's column in today's NY Times is devoted almost entirely to the Jays and Rays as dangerous teams in the AL East. Don't be fooled by his unfortunate anti-sabermetric rant a few months ago. He does write some dumb stuff, but he is not a bad columnist of the traditional type.

I think the Rays finish fourth at least, obviously
But I like Toronto's chances at finishing above New York in the division, and maybe even the Rays too if the stars align. I think Boston takes first, but if their pitchers keep dropping like flies, even that could change.

Re: I think the Rays finish fourth at least, obvio
I think the Yankees are in trouble. They are relying on a rotation that includes 2 virtual rookies and two rather old pitchers, one of whom has declined in 3 of his last 4 years. They also have a largely unproven bullpen. And I do not see much depth to withstand injury or ineffectiveness, although I may be underrating some of the higher level prospects in saying that. Still, the first line after the starters appear to be Rasner, Igawa and Karstens, and I doubt that is a comforting thought to Yankee fans.

As for the offense, it will probably continue to be excellent. But except for Cano and Cabrera, I don't see anyone who can be expected to improve, while I do see the probability of some regression at every other position (from last year, that is). In some cases, age and injury are particularly of concern, as with Damon, Matsui, Giambi and even Abreu. In others, it seems unlikely they will repeat their 2007 performance, although I suppose A-Rod could. But Posada? They should still score plenty, but perhaps not enough to overcome pitching problems that seem looming.

I also don't think they are particularly good defensively, but there the criticism may be overdone. Chances are Cano and Cabrera are excellent and A-Rod can be also. Damon's arm is not as much a problem in LF, and he does have good range there, while Abreu is probably good enough in RF. But Giambi will not help his infielders much, Posada is adequate but not outstanding defensively, and I have no comment on Jeter except that he is a great player and a Hall of Famer.

In any case, I think there is a sense that this team is put together a bit with spit and glue. At least, unlike in the past, they do seem to have a solid bench, and that should help, so it is premature to count them out. But right now, I see them as a 3rd, and with some Rays' luck, a 4th place team.

Re: Rays Postseason?
They are certain to improve over last year.  I'm pretty sure they'd be better this year than last, even if they were sub .500 this spring.

However, I still think that their spring start will have little to no bearing on how they perform this season, with the exception being that it will have some effect on the composition of the opening day roster.

For a closer look at how much spring success correlates with regular season success, check out the following (older) link.

Re: Rays Postseason?
I think I have read that the only correlation ever discovered between spring training records and regular season results is for individual players. Apparently if a player's slugging % in the spring is better than +200 over his career average (I do not know big a sample size either number has to represent) it bodes well for his upcoming season.

Has anyone else read anything like that? I may have it completely wrong as I have no idea my source or whether I simply imagined it.
